Beavers Take Game 1, 5-2, and Cruise to Sweep With 10-5 Victory in Game 2
WELLESLEY, Mass.—Babson College pounded out 22 hits and got complete games from senior Madison Dinaso (Ardsley, N.Y.) and sophomore Ali Reilly
(New Canaan, Conn.) to sweep Wellesley College in New England Women's
and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action on Friday
afternoon. The Beavers rallied to win the opener 5-2 before finishing
off the sweep with a 10-5 victory in game two.
Babson, which has won seven of its last nine games, is now 12-8
overall and 3-3 in conference play, while Wellesley falls to 8-8 overall
and 4-2 in the NEWMAC.
Junior Leslie Moore (Atkinson, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while seniors Caitie Benoit
(Williamstown, Mass.) and Rachel Bullard
(Worcester, Mass.) both drove in a pair of runs in the opener for the
Beavers. Reilly had another strong outing in the circle as she struck
out eight and gave up just two runs on seven hits in a complete-game
effort.
Wellesley took a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk in the first before
Reilly escaped further damage with back-to-back strikeouts to end the
frame. The Blue extended its lead to 2-0 on junior Anna Pisac's
(Snohomish, Wash.) solo home run in the third, but the Green and White
responded with a run in the top of the fourth as first-year Josephine Mares (Houston, Texas) singled to center with one out and came around two score two batters later on Moore's double to left.
The Beavers were unable to take advantage of a one-out single by
Bullard in the fifth, but pushed across four runs to take the lead for
good an inning later. Junior Meaghan Merullo (Winchester, Mass.) and first-year Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) singled to load the bases before Benoit drove in Moore and junior Catherine Pitts (Winchester, Mass.) with a one-out single to center. Senior Maya Lacy
(East Mill Creek, Utah), who came on as a pinch runner for Benoit,
stole second and then came around along with Tango on Bullard's two-out
single to left to make it 5-2.
Reilly worked around a lead-off single in the sixth and a two-out
double in the bottom of the seventh to preserve her seventh win of the
year for Babson.
The Green and White kept things rolling in game two as it scored in
each of the first five innings to build an eight-run advantage. Trailing
2-1 in the top of the second, the Beavers got a two-out, two-run double
from sophomore Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) to take the lead for good.
Babson added to its lead with a five-run third inning, sparked by
Moore's lead-off homer to right. Benoit drove in a run with a single to
center and Mares followed with an RBI ground out before Smith plated two
more runs with another two-out double to make it 8-2. Tango drove in
Moore in the top of the fourth and Merullo singled home Smith in the
fifth to give the Green and White its biggest lead of the game.
Dinaso (2-1) allowed three earned runs and scattered 12 hits in the
first complete game of her career for the Beavers. Smith went 4-for-5 at
the plate with three doubles and four RBI, while Moore drove in a pair
of runs and scored twice. Merullo also went 3-for-3 with a walk and an
RBI, and Bullard added two more hits in the win.
Babson will return to action today when it hosts Coast Guard in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
