HAMDEN, Conn. -
University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its Wednesday afternoon
matchup at Quinnipiac by the score of 7-0 at QU Baseball Field. The loss
leaves the Minutemen at 11-19, while the Bobcats improve to 17-23.
Quinnipiac opened up the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the
first on four hits, including an RBI double by Matthew Oestreicher and
an RBI single from Joseph Burns with two outs.
Burns drove in his second run of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly in
the third and a solo home run by Brian Moskey brought the score to 5-0
in the sixth. The Bobcats later added two more runs on three hits in the
eighth.
UMass managed just four hits in the contest, including doubles by junior Mike Hart and senior John Jennings in the first and fourth, respectively. Junior Jon Avallone contributed a single in the eighth and pinch hitter Matt Hosman singled in the ninth, as well.
Freshman Casey Aubin
started on the mound for the Minutemen and took the loss (2-3),
allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts over
three innings of work. Quinnipiac starter Brandon Shileikis tossed six
shutout innings en route to the win (3-0), allowed one hit, walked one
and struck out two.
UMass will be back in action on Fri., Apr. 29, when the squad will open
up its home Atlantic 10 series vs. Fordham at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden
Field.
