No. 2 Seed Tennis Ends Season in A-10 Loss to George Washington

Colonials rally late in tight match to knock Minutewomen out of A-10 Championship.


MASON, Ohio - A pair of late wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles proved the difference maker as No. 7 seed George Washington upset No. 2 seed UMass on Friday afternoon at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The Minutewomen's season closes with a 14-7 overall record following the early tournament exit.

Originally slated to be played outdoors at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, the match was moved
indoors at the Camargo Racquet Club due to inclement weather in the area.

The Colonials started the match winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the first to four-point clinch format. George Washington won the No. 1 match (6-1) but UMass was able to tie doubles play with a win from Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley in the No. 2 match (6-3). GW clinched the opening point with a 6-4 win in the No. 3 match.

In singles play, UMass was able to take a 2-1 lead after Carol Benito won in straight sets at No. 5 play and Arielle Griffin won in three sets in the No. 3 match.

The Colonials tied the match 2-2 winning the No. 1 match. Crawford won the opening set 6-0, but fell in the next two including a tightly contested 7-6 third set.

Brittany Collens regained the lead, 3-2, for the Minutewomen win a win at No. 6 singles, but George Washington once again tied it with a three set win on the No. 2 court.

The Colonials sealed the win at No. 4 singles with Taylor Nederlander outlasting Woosley in three sets. Both players exchanged 6-3 wins in the first two sets. Nederlander edged Woosley 7-5 in the deciding third set giving the final team score.
