CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard softball team (14-13,
4-2 Ivy), swept Columbia (7-22, 2-4 Ivy) Friday afternoon at Soldiers
Field, toppling the Lions 8-0 and 4-3.
Harvard 8, Columbia 0 – 5 innings
The Crimson outhit the Lions 13-3 in an 8-0 victory, which was completed in five innings. Freshman Meagan Lantz drove in three of Harvard's runs off of three hits, while classmate Rhianna Rich also tallied a game-high three hits. Senior pitcher Morgan Groom struck out six and allowed one walk in her fifth win on the season.
Harvard started out strong as Zoe Galindo led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field and Maddy Kaplan followed with a single to centerfield, scoring Galindo. Savannah Bradley
kept the scoring coming as she singled to right field to record her
ninth and 10th RBI of the year when Kaplan and Lantz crossed the plate,
putting the Crimson up 3-0.
Groom held Columbia to no runs in the top of the second and only left
one on base, as the Crimson
picked up another two runs in the bottom of
the second off of a fielder's choice by Kaplan and a Lantz single. Both
teams did not record any tallies in the third, but the bottom of the
fourth saw the Crimson extend its lead to seven. Lantz roped a triple
into center field scoring Kaitlyn Schiffhauer, who reached on a Lions' error, while Lantz scored another run from Haley Davis' fielder's choice.
The top of the fifth saw Columbia ground out, strike out, and pop
out, still giving Harvard a 7-0 advantage. In the bottom of the frame,
Rich reached on her third hit of the day, and Galindo moved her to
second on a hard grounder to shortstop. Schiffhauer connected on a ball,
singling into center field scoring Harvard's eighth and final run of
the game to secure the victory.
Harvard 4, Columbia 3
In a close hitting battle between the Crimson and the Lions, Harvard
ended up on top as it recorded four runs off of seven hits, while
Columbia tallied three runs off of eight hits. Seven Crimson batters
tallied hits in the second of the doubleheader, with Bradley and Dallas Hogan driving in runs.
The Lions connected early in the game when Troutt homered to right
center scoring Gott for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Each pitcher
held the teams to no runs until the Crimson scored three runs
connecting on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Lantz tallied her
third RBI of the day as she singled to center to plate Schiffhauer from
second. Lantz would later cross home plate after Bradley singled to left
field. The final run of the inning came off the bat of Hogan, who
plated Catherine Callaway.
Columbia knotted the game at three in the top of the fifth after
Maddie Gott reached on a fielder's choice, advanced on a wild pitch and
then scored off of a Taylor Troutt RBI. Sarah Smith relieved Taylor Cabe in the circle for the Crimson and closed out the inning.
A leadoff triple from Rich in the fifth helped give the Crimson the
edge as Kaplan drove home the shortstop with a sacrifice fly. Smith
retired the sixth and seventh innings with three strikeouts and three
ground balls earning her first win of her career.
Harvard hosts Penn today at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. contests at
Soldiers Field, which will both be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital
Network
