Worcester, MA- Taking a step away from a challenging non-conference early season schedule, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (5-7, 0-0) will begin their conference season this afternoon versus the Falcons. Fitchburg State (3-11, 0-0) also began their MASCAC slate, coming in off a five game losing streak.
Final
Worcester State: 72
Fitchburg State: 53
How it Happened:
Worcester State and senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) would waste no time on the court, jumping out to a 19-4 lead. Hurynowicz started the game just 32 points away from her career 1,000th point and was setting her pace early. Fitchburg State would eventually manage to settle down the Lancer's offense as
Worcester looked to their bench for additional support over the opening two quarters. At the close of the first, the Blue and Gold would hold an 18 point edge and expand it to 20 in the second before the Falcons were able to find some offensive rhythm and slow down the Lancers recording 13 points to Worcester's 12 in the second. As the clock clicked down, Worcester would hold the 38-21 lead, with Hurynowicz ending the first 20 minutes with a point for each minute of action.
The second half would be a far more balanced game as Fitchburg pulled out the full court press to add a layer of pressure onto Worcester, again only limiting them to 12 points while cutting into the lead with 17 in the third quarter. As the final 10 minutes were entered on the board, Worcester was aiming to hold onto their lead and find Hurynowicz her final 10 points. While the team worked as a unified front to shut down the surge of the Falcons, out scoring them 22-15 in the final quarter to solidify their lead, the elusive 1,000th career point would be put on hold as Hurynowicz would end the day with 30 points.
Sophomore Alana Smith, with ehr former school of Chicopee in the house, would record a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the game.
What's Next:
Worcester State (6-7, 1-0) has minimal time to catch their breath as they will return to action Monday night at 7pm when they host Mount Holyoke.
