Wheaton Men's Lacrosse Honors Seniors Prior to MIT Game

NORTON, Mass. – After holding the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team scoreless in the fourth quarter, MIT overcame a five goal deficit to earn a 13-12 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win in overtime at Nordin Field on Wednesday night.

The Lyons, who honored their seniors prior to the contest, end the season with a 6-8 overall and record and 2-4 conference standing. The Engineers enter the NEWMAC Tournament with a 12-3 record and 5-1 mark in the NEWMAC.

Scott Whear led the Lyons with the teams only hat trick, while both Will Morrison and Kyle Neale
ended the night with two goals and an assist.

Graham Davis led the Engineers with a game-high five goals and three assists, while teammate Harris Stolzenberg finished with three goals and an assist. Mitch Turley put away two goals for MIT.

Turley opened the scoring for MIT with a goal less than a minute into the contest, before back-to-back goals by Stolzenberg. The Engineers found a way around the Lyon defense once again, taking a 4-0 lead on a Luke Verdi goal.

Neale finally ended Wheaton's scoreless drought with 7:10 to play in the first quarter after receiving the ball from Ryan Gjerset. Michael Traub responded moments later for MIT, handing the visitors a 5-1 advantage. Devin Higgins and Whear netted goals before the end of the period, cutting the Lyon deficit to two.

Wheaton held MIT scoreless in the second quarter, while netting two goals of its own, sending the two sides into the half deadlocked at 5-5.

The Lyons carried their momentum into the third quarter, outscoring their opponents 7-2. Neale started a six goal scoring frenzy that started at the 13:12 mark and ended with a goal by Tristan Tucker with 8:37 left in the quarter.

MIT found its first goal of the third quarter with Turley scoring his second of the game, this time with Wheaton down a man. Griffin Phaneuf earned the goal back three minutes later just to have it countered by the Engineers a few seconds later.

Trailing 12-7 to start the fourth quarter, MIT mounted a comeback that saw four consecutive goals from Davis. Stolzenberg sent the game into overtime after knotting the contest at 12-12 with 1:50 remaining in regulation.

With just 15 seconds gone in the overtime period, Davis once again found the back of the net, earning the win for the Engineers.
