No. 7 Amherst Completes Late Rally, Downs Wesleyan, 18-17 (OT)

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No. 7 Amherst College men's lacrosse team earned a thrilling and hard-fought, 18-17 come-from-behind overtime victory over NESCAC and Little III rival Wesleyan University in Wednesday evening's conference tilt at Citrin Field in Middletown, Conn.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
  • A back-and-forth first quarter saw Wesleyan run out to a 6-2 lead, before Amherst answered with a 6-2 second frame to set the score at 8-8 after 30 minutes of action.
  • Back-to-back Wesleyan goals by Taylor Ghesquiere gave the Cardinals a 2-0 edge, before Matt Killian '17 responded with a goal to make it 2-1.
  • Two more scores by Quentin DellaFera and Harry Stanton (assisted by DellaFera on the man-advantage) gave Wesleyan a 4-1 lead with 4:03 to play in the first quarter.
  • Chris Albanese '17 answered for Amherst at the 1:46 mark following an assist from Rob Butko '16, but quick scores by Ryan Lynch and Ben Shively allowed Wesleyan to take a 6-2 lead after one period of play. Lynch provided the assist on Shively's score.
  • Brett Inglesby '18 started the scoring for the Purple & White in the second frame at the 12:53 mark, before Stanton answered with an assist from DellaFera.
  • Michael Litner '16 then powered in a goal following Sam Lawlor's '16 pass to make it 7-4, before Dylan Park '16 struck at the 7:19 mark to pull the visitors to within two (7-5).
  • Another Stanton goal, aided by Carter Hawthorne on the extra-man opportunity, made it 8-5, but Amherst struck three more times before the end of the quarter to knot the game at 8-8.
  • Quinn Moroney '16 scored with an assist from Haffey, before Evan Wolf '19 collected an unassisted tally. Moroney then found Haffey with 14 seconds left in the stanza bring the game to a deadlock.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
  • The third quarter saw the Cardinals stake the first three scores as Stanton scored 53 seconds into the half.
  • DellaFera added a score at the 7:59 mark, and Ghesquiere followed with a man-up tally with 6:02 remaining in the frame to make 11-8. Niall Devaney and Colin Uyeki provided the helpers on the respective goals.
  • Amherst's Charlie Gill '16 halted Wesleyan's scoring stretch after scorching the net on a feed from Park, but goals by Stanton and Hawthorne set the score at 13-9 with 1:45 left in the period.
  • Moroney delivered an unassisted goal 42 seconds later to close out the scoring in the quarter and set the game at 13-10 in favor of the Cardinals after 45 minutes.
  • Wesleyan applied early pressure to start the fourth quarter as Devaney and Jason Gibson scored back-to-back goals separated by just 10 seconds in the first minute of the frame to lift the hosts lead to 15-10.
  • A goal by Hawthorne at the 12:10 mark gave the Cardinals a 16-10 cushion. Christian Barker assisted on the play.
  • Amherst notched its first goal of the quarter when Butko found Wolf who scored his second at the 10:25 mark to make it 16-11.
  • An extra-man opportunity strike from Park, assisted by Moroney then pulled the Purple & White to within four (16-12) at the 7:34 mark.
  • Ian Kadish '18 won the ensuing faceoff and dished Moroney who found Haffey for the goal to narrow the deficit to 16-13 just eight seconds later.
  • A fourth straight goal by the visitors, this one by Albanese with 6:17 left in the quarter, pulled Amherst to within two (16-14) following a nice dish from Moroney.
  • Stanton halted the surge with his six goal of the contest after receiving a nice pass from DellaFera to make it 17-14 with 5:33 on the clock.
  • With 3:20 left to play in regulation, Moroney beat the keeper to again shrink the Purple & White's deficit to two (17-15), before a man-up score by Haffey (assisted by Moroney) dwindled the Wesleyan lead to one at 17-16 with 1:07 on the clock.
  • After a turnover by Wesleyan with less than ten seconds to play, Moroney found Haffey who fired in the game-tying goal with time expiring to force a period of extra time.
OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
  • After a Cardinals turnover early in the extra stanza, Connor Crump '16 picked up a critical ground ball giving Amherst possession.
  • At the 3:05 mark, Park scorched the nylon for the game-winner setup by a feed from Litner to give the Purple & White a sensational come-from-behind win.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Haffey finished with four goals and an assist, while Moroney and Park followed with three scores each.
  • Kadish led all players with 10 ground ball pickups, while Butko added nine. Killian and Moroney chipped in six ground balls each, while Killian caused a trio of opponent turnovers. Kadish was 18-for-27 in faceoffs.  
  • Cody Tranbarger sealed the win with nine saves, while his counterpart Ted Bergman made 16 stops in the losing effort.
  • Shively led Wesleyan with eight ground balls, while Devaney added five.
UP NEXT
  • Amherst returns to NESCAC action Saturday, April 9 when it hosts Colby College at 1 p.m. at Gooding Field.
  • Wesleyan travels to NESCAC and Little III foe Williams College on Saturday, April 9 for a 1 p.m. game in Williamstown, Mass.
