MIT junior Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) had four assists, to go with three goals, while junior Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) registered a game-high four markers and sophomore Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) notched three of his own, pacing the MIT offensive attack.
Leading 5-3 at the half, the Engineers went on a 5-0 run to open third quarter action, which broke the game wide open, 10-3. Stolzenberg highlighted the spurt, where all three of his goals were scored – including a man-up tally – and was joined by Traub and senior Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) to put the game out of reach.
Salem State cut the deficit back to five, 11-6, on a 3-1 run with 4:54 expired in the final quarter. Bourgeois scored twice and classmate Alex Pearsons (Burlington, Mass.) added an unassisted tally to account for the spurt. However, MIT responded quickly by scoring the next four goals of the contest, sealing the Engineers win.
In a span of nearly six minutes over the last 9:46 of the contest, MIT scored two goals being a man-down after penalties cost the Engineers the attacker. Stein and Davis accounted for the other two as MIT secured the non-conference victory over Salem State.
MIT senior goalkeeper Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) picked up the win, making five saves in net for the Engineers as his ledger improves to 8-2 this season. Freshmen Victor Fink (Haverford, Pa.) and Alex Lynch (Roswell, Ga.) split the remaining 15 minutes in goal for MIT combining for five stops off the bench. Salem State net minder Kevin Lally (Beverly, Mass.) shouldered the loss with a season-high 22 saves.
Salem State (5-5) hosts Eastern Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. MIT (8-2) opens New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday with a trip to Babson College at 11:00 a.m.
