No. 7 Men's Lacrosse Edged by No. 4 Wesleyan, 12-11 in Little III Battle

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In a back-and-forth battle, a five goal fourth quarter by the Cardinals proved too much to overcome as the No. 7 Amherst College men's lacrosse team was edged by Little III rival and fourth-ranked Wesleyan, 12-11 Wednesday evening at Citrin Field.

With the setback, Amherst falls to 8-2 on the season and to 4-1 in league play, while Wesleyan improves to 8-1 overall (5-0 NESCAC). Amherst returns to the field on Saturday, April 7 when they host archrival Williams beginning at 1 p.m.

In a three goal first quarter, the Cardinals were first on the board as Ronan Jacoby netted an unassisted tally 1:25 into the matchup.

Responding two-fold, Zach Schwartz '18 capitalized on a Wesleyan penalty at the 8:48 mark, potting a dish from Dylan Peabody '21 before Peabody assisted on a score by Evan Wolf '19 at the 7:09 mark to give the Mammoths an early 2-1 lead.

Matt Solberg '20 extended Amherst's lead to 3-1 on an assist from Jimmy McAfee '20 with 13:31 on the clock in the second period, however the Cardinals went on to score three straight goals behind markers from Christian Barker and Jacoby (2) to take a one-goal edge.

The sides closed out the first half with a score each in the final minute before the horn, as Jack Norton '19 drove Colin Minicus's '20 pass into the nylon at the 37 second mark and Ryan Lynch posted an unassisted score six seconds later to give the home team a 5-4 lead at intermission. 

Taking an 8-7 lead with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, the Mammoths doubled up Wesleyan, 4-2 in the third stanza to own a one-goal edge.

Logging four unanswered markers to open the third period, Wolf and Trenton Shore '19 scored back-to-back player up goals, before Wolf recorded his third score for the game with 7:51 on the clock to give Amherst a 7-5 cushion.

Peabody made it 8-5 with an assist from Minicus at the 6:51 mark, but the Cardinals finished the third with unassisted goals by Cole Turpin and Zander Kotsen in the final 3:46 to cut the Mammoths' advantage to one entering the final quarter. 

In a thrilling fourth, Christian Barker deadlocked the bout at 8-8 at the 10:13 mark to set up an exciting final stretch for the two top-10 teams.

The Mammoths rebuilt a two-goal lead with unassisted scores by Norton and McAfee in a 15 second span, however the Cardinals answered the two quick markers with three consecutive goals to take their first lead since the opening stanza.

Harry Stanton beat the Amherst netminder on a dish from Scott Irwin at the 8:45 mark, while Collin Hitterand and Carter Hawthorne soon followed with goals of their own to give the Cardinals an 11-10 lead with 5:25 to play.

Battling back, Minicus found Norton for the marker with three minutes remaining in regulation, however a Wesleyan goal by Hawthorne at the 2:24 mark stood as the difference maker as the home team held on for the 12-11 victory. 

BY THE NUMBERS

• In between the pipes, Chad Simons '21 (2-1) made 12 saves in the losing effort for Amherst, while Otto Bohan (6-0) registered 19 stops in the win for Wesleyan.
• Dylan Finazzo '20 went 19-for-26 on face offs to lead the Mammoths and posted a game-high 14 ground balls, while Reid Shilling led Amherst with two forced turnovers.
• Amherst owned a 31-24 edge in shots on target and a 44-35 advantage in ground balls.
• The Mammoths went a perfect 13-for-13 on clears and 3-for-6 up a player, while the Cardinals finished 20-for-22 on clear attempts and 1-for-5 on player-up opportunities.

Amherst College Men's Tennis Completes Weekend Double by Topping Kenyon

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The No. 7 Amherst College men's tennis team improved to 6-1 with an 8-1 victory over Kenyon College on Sunday morning at Swarthmore College's Faulkner Courts.

The Mammoths won both of their neutral-site matches at Swarthmore this weekend, and will next prepare to begin New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play next Saturday at Bates.

Amherst got things going with a sweep through doubles. Their first point came from Sean Wei '21 and Jayson Fung '20 who won 8-4 at the top flight. Following another 8-4 victory at No. 3 from Kevin '21 Ma and Cameron Raglin '19, Ethan Hillis '21 and Zach Bessette '19 edged Austin Diehl and Jacob Zalenski 8-6 at the second flight.
 
Bessette secured Amherst's fourth match point at the start of singles. He won 6-2, 6-3 against Michael Liu. That was followed up by Kevin Ma's straight-sets win at the third spot. That match versus Nicholas Paolucci brought identical 6-3 scores.
 
Kenyon did manage to win one singles match, and it came from Diehl. He moved his spring record to 13-0 after winning in three sets against Hillis. In the first, Diehl won 6-3. After a 6-3 defeat in the second, Diehl won 6-2 in the third.
 
Wei held off Zalenski 7-5, 6-4 in the top flight, while Fung defeated Bryan Yoshino 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 and Jesse Levitin '19 was a straight set winner at sixth singles.
 
Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a home date with rival Denison University on Wednesday, April 4 at 4:30 p.m.

Strong Second Half Lifts No. 1 Men’s Basketball Past Emerson, 79-62

AMHERST, Mass. – Jayde Dawson '18 netted a team-high 16 points off the bench in the second half, and Johnny McCarthy '18 registered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds as the top-ranked Amherst College men's basketball team scored 54 second half points en route to a 79-62 non-conference victory over Emerson College Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

With the win, Amherst improves to 5-0 on the season and returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 6 when it hosts Brandeis University at 7 p.m. at LeFrak Gymnasium. Emerson moves to 3-3 overall.

In the opening stanza, Amherst pulled ahead to a 14-4 lead through the first 9:02 as McCarthy swished a trey, while David George '17 powered in a pair of buckets in the paint. A 6-2 run by Emerson capped by a Michael Sheng layup at the 7:58 mark pulled the Lions to within six at 16-10, before a George jumper less than three minutes later gave the Purple & White a 23-12 advantage with 4:54 remaining in first half. Amherst was then held to just two for the duration of the period, as the visitors hit on 5-of-6 from the free throw line, while Sheng and Mac Sashin delivered a pair of layups each to set the score at 25-25 at intermission.

After shooting just 29.4% from the field and 25% from three-point range in the first half, Amherst found its stride in the second half, converting 61.3% of its shots from the floor, and 50% from beyond-the-arc in the second half led by Dawson's 16-point effort off the bench. Eric Conklin '17 and McCarthy added 10 points each in the period as the Purple & White outscored Emerson, 54-37 in the frame to pull away to the win.

Conklin scored on the first three possessions to start the half for Amherst, and McCarthy canned a triple at the 17:20 mark to give the Purple & White a 34-29 lead. A Kent Ellertson jumper at the 12:06 mark pulled the Lions to within seven (42-35), but layups by McCarthy, Michael Riopel '18, and Dawson ballooned the advantage to 48-35. A trey by Sheng made it 48-38, but a 14-4 run over the next 3:16, highlighted by three-pointers from Dawson and Jeff Racy '17 and capped by an Eric Sellew '20 layup gave Amherst its largest advantage of the game (20 points) at 62-42. From there, another Dawson strike from long distance, and a 10-for-12 effort at the charity stripe helped the Purple & White clinch the 79-62 victory.                                          

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Dawson was 6-of-10 from the floor and finished with 16 points, while Riopel and Conklin added 12 points and seven rebounds each off the bench. McCarthy finished 5-for-11 for 15 points and pulled in a game-best 10 rebounds, while Reid Berman '17 dished out four assists, while McCarthy and Racy dished out three each.

Sheng led all players with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field, while Geoffrey Gray followed with 16 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. Ben Holding added 10 points in reserve for Emerson, while Sashin totaled eight points, while he and Sheng added seven rebounds apiece.

No. 21 Men’s Squash Sweeps by Brandeis, 9-0

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 21 Amherst College men's squash team earned a 9-0 sweep over Brandeis University in the 2016-17 season opener for the Purple & White Saturday afternoon at the Davenport Squash Courts.

With the win, Amherst begins its campaign 1-0, while Brandeis falls to 1-5 overall. The Purple & White return to action in 2017 when they host Middlebury College at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Davenport Squash Courts.

Amherst won all nine matches by virtue of 3-0 sweeps. Michael Groot '17 earned an 11-8, 11-4, 11-3 win from the first position, while David Merkel '19 won 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 in position two. Darian Ehsani '17 posted an 11-7, 11-1, 11-4 victory from the third court, while Lucas Sheiner '19 added an 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 win from the fourth court.

Newcomers Mateen Mills '20, Christopher Zimmerman '20 and Mitch Ford picked up wins on the fifth, sixth and seventh courts respectively, while Ian Petty '19 earned an 11-0, 11-2, 11-3 win on court eight. Cameron Bahadori '17 (11-1, 11-5, 11-1) and Rob Schwartz III '19 (11-1, 11-1, 11-2) added wins from positions nine and 10 to complete the sweep for the Purple & White.

Spina Homers Twice as Amherst Baseball Downs Framingham State, 6-4

Northborough, Mass. - The Amherst College baseball team registered 11 hits, including two home runs by junior Anthony Spina, to down non-conference opponent Framingham State University, 6-4 Tuesday evening at the NE Baseball Complex.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• Amherst was first to strike, getting on the board in the top of the second as Spina showed off his speed by stealing home to record his seventh steal of the season. The Rams would immediately respond, however, with RJ Gray homering in the leadoff spot to even the score at 1-1. 
• Demonstrating his power two innings later, Spina sent a shot over the left field fence to put the Purple & White up 2-1. Framingham State would once again match Amherst run for run, taking advantage of a fielding error to notch the game at 2-2.
• The Purple & White would regain and keep the lead for good in the top of the sixth, as Spina recorded his second home run of the game over the left field wall to give Amherst a 4-2 edge. 
• The Rams would cross the plate two more times in the matchup, however clutch RBI's by Yanni Thanopoulos '17 and Max Steinhorn '18 would lift Amherst to the 6-4 win.
• Ryan Connelly paced the Framingham State offense, going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, while Gray finished 1-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. 
• Recording a game-high four hits, Spina led the Amherst offense, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI's. Dave Cunningham '16 was the only other multi-hit getter for the Purple & White, going 2-for-5 with a run.  
• One of eight Rams pitchers to appear in the matchup, Al Wallach took the loss, giving up two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings. 
• Tabbed with the start, George Long '17 (3-1) earned the win for Amherst, giving up four hits and three runs while striking out five in 5.1 innings on the mound. Junior Mike Castiglie tossed 0.2 innings in relief for the Purple & White, allowing two hits and a run, while first-year Andrew Ferrero earned his third save of the year, tossing a hitless and runless final three innings while fanning four. 

BY THE NUMBERS

• Amherst outhit the Rams, 11-6.
• The Purple & White pitching staff combined for five walks and nine strikeouts, while the Rams posted no walks and 10 strikeouts. 
• Amherst left ten runners on base in the matchup, while Framingham State stranded six.

No. 25 Baseball Scores Eight Runs in the Third to Down WPI, 15-6

WORCESTER, Mass. - The No. 25 Amherst College baseball team rallied back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat WPI, 15-6 in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference tilt at the Class of 1893 Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• Amherst recorded two outs on back-to-back batters in it the bottom of the first, however the Engineers would use two walks and three hits to score five runs and take a 5-0 lead by innings end. Taking the batters box with the bases loaded DJ Oullette sent a single to center field to score two, before Steven Gallagher homered to right field a batter later to clear the bases and tally three RBI's.
• The Purple & White began its comeback an inning later to make it a 5-2 contest. Conner Gunn '16 began the inning with a double to left center before Anthony Spina '17 singled to center field to move Gunn to third. With runners on the corners Max Steinhorn '18 sent a shot to center field to score Gunn, before Ariel Kenney '18 hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Spina two batters later.
• With an eight-run inning in the third, Amherst made it a 10-5 contest as Spina, Steinhorn, Yanni Thanopoulos '17, and Dave Cunningham '16 all notched RBI's for the Purple & White.
• WPI recorded their sixth and final run of the game in the third with Gallagher plating Anthony Capuano with a sacrifice fly to center field.
• Amherst would plate another run in the fourth and two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth to clinch the non-conference win. 
• Thanopoulos and Spina paced the Amherst offense with Thanopoulos finishing 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI's and Spina going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's. Steinhorn went 2-for-5 in the matchup with three RBI's.
• Five different Engineers registered a hit for WPI with Steven Gallagher going 1-for-3 with a run and four RBI's.
• Keenan Szulik '16 pitched 0.2 innings in the start for Amherst allowing five runs on three hits, while George Long '17 (2-1) entered in relief and earned the win, giving up one run and two hits while fanning three in 4.1 innings. Drew Fischer '18, Chris Baldi '17, Sam Schneider '18, and Andrew Ferrero '19 each tossing an inning each while combining to go hitless.
• Tabbed with the start Sam Bacchaocchi (0-3) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and 10 runs, while CJ Doskocil tossed 2.1 innings in relief, giving up two hits and a run while striking out three. Doug Rives, Mike Duclos, Dan Bettigole, and Drew Gelinas each tossed an inning for WPI, combining for three hits and four runs.

• Jamie Gracie '17 finished seventh after cutting two strokes off her day one score to post an overall tally of 162 (82-80).

Amherst Places Second at Little Three Championship

AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst College men's golf team finished second in the annual Little Three Championship against Williams College and Wesleyan University Wednesday afternoon at Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Amherst, Mass.

The 36-hole event features an alternate shot format in the morning, followed by singles match play in the afternoon.

In the alternating shot format, Williams defeated Wesleyan, 4-0, while Amherst also defeated the Cardinals, 4-0. The Ephs added a 3-1 win over the Purple & White.

No. 8 Amherst Powers Past Mount Holyoke, 18-4

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Kelly Karczewski '18 and Claire Cagnassola '17 netted three goals each and 11 different players scored a goal as the eighth-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team powered past Mount Holyoke College, 18-4, Wednesday evening at the Mount Holyoke College Turf Field in South Hadley, Mass.

With the win, Amherst improves to 10-2 on the season, while Mount Holyoke moves to 2-10 overall.
Amherst scored 12 goals in the first half and six in the second stanza to post its decisive, 18-4 victory.

Crerend’s Late Goal Lifts No. 7 Amherst Over No. 17 Tufts, 7-6 in NESCAC Thriller

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Julia Crerend '18 scored with seven seconds remaining to break a 6-6 deadlock and the seventh-ranked Purple & White scored four unanswered goals in the second half to complete a thrilling comeback victory over No. 17 Tufts University, 7-6 on Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field in NESCAC women's lacrosse action.

With the win, Amherst has now won four games in a row and improves to 9-2 overall, 6-2 in NESCAC action, while Tufts moves to 6-6 on the season, 2-5 in league play.

• A back-and-forth start to the first period featured two goals aside in a span of five minutes as Hannah Krueger '17 and Rachel Passarelli '16 each found the back of the net for Amherst, while Caroline Ross collected two goals for Tufts, with an assist from Brigid Bowser on the first score to make it 2-2 at the 20:44 mark.

No. 6 Amherst Falls at No. 3 Tufts, 16-11

MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 6 Amherst College men's lacrosse team received a pair of goals from Quinn Moroney '16 and Evan Wolf '16, but No. 3 Tufts University used an eight goal first quarter to help the Jumbos pull away to a 16-11 victory in Saturday's NESCAC tilt at Bello Field in Medford, Mass.

With the loss, Amherst sees its three-game winning streak snapped as it moves to 10-3 on the season, 6-3 in NESCAC action. Tufts improves to 11-1 overall, 7-0 in league action.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

• Tufts struck twice in a span 44 seconds as Kyle Howard-Johnson scored twice to give the Jumbos a 2-0 lead at the 11:49 mark.
• Wolf netted the first of his goals at the 10:35 mark to cut the lead in half following a dish from Sam Lawlor '16, but Tufts answered with six straight scores in just under six minutes to make it 8-1 with 2:23 to play in the period.
• Howard-Johnson scored twice more during the run, while John Uppgren also added two scores.

Lucey Paces Men's Track & Field at the Silfen Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Amherst College men's outdoor track & field team competed in the non-scoring Silfen Invitational Friday afternoon at Connecticut College.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

• Junior Steven Lucey battled to a fourth place finish in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:57.87
• The Purple & White had four competitors in the 5000 meter run. Leading the way for the Purple & White was senior Dan Crowley who finished second in the 21-man race with a time of 14:29.98. Sophomore Mohamed Hussein took seventh with an overall mark of 14:35.29, while teammate Craig Nelson '18 placed 12th overall (14:57.90). First-year Cosmo Brossy was the final Amherst runner to cross the finish line, placing 14th with a mark of 15:03.21.

No. 14 Men's Tennis Topples MIT, 6-3

AMHERST, Mass. – Up 2-1 after doubles competition, the No. 14 Amherst College men's tennis team claimed four of six singles matches to down MIT, 6-3 in Friday afternoon's non-conference matchup at the Amherst Tennis Courts.

No. 19/14 Baseball Shuts Out Worcester State, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 19/14 Amherst College baseball team scored three unanswered runs to defeat Worcester State, 3-0 and record its second shutout of the season Wednesday afternoon at Rockwood Park.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Amherst would cross the plate again in the sixth and the seventh to claim the 3-0 shut out win.
• With the bases loaded and one out in the second, Nick Nardone '19 notched a single through the left side to score Conner Gunn '16 and give the Purple & White a 1-0 advantage.
• Amherst would extend its lead four innings later as Anthony Spina '16 followed Gunn's double with a double to right center to make it a 2-0 contest.
• The final run of the game came in the top of the seventh with Harry Roberson '18 recording a single to score Max Steinhorn '18.
• Five different Lancers recorded a hit with Michael Powers and Robbie Fraser each finishing 1-for-3.

No. 7 Amherst Pulls Away From Conn. College, 11-5

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 7 Amherst College women's lacrosse team used three goals each from Rachel Passarelli '16, Hanna Krueger '17, and Kate Wyeth '17 to down Connecticut College, 11-5 in Tuesday's NESCAC contest at Gooding Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 8-2 on the season, 5-2 in league action, while Conn. College moves to 5-7 overall, 1-6 in NESCAC play.

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The No. 6 Amherst College men's lacrosse team used a nine-assist effort from Quinn Moroney '16 and a six-goal outing from Kane Haffey '16 to help the Purple & White secure a 15-9 victory over NESCAC rival Conn. College Tuesday afternoon at the Artificial Turf Field at Silfen Stadium in New London, Conn.

With the win, Amherst improves to 10-2 overall, 6-1 in league play, while Conn. College moves to 6-6 on the season, 2-5 in NESCAC action.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

• Conn. College got off to a fast start as Pierce DellaFera scored a man-up goal at the 12:40 mark assisted by Derek Bertolini to give the Camels a 1-0 lead.
• Less than one minute later Moroney found Haffey on the extra-man opportunity to start a 6-0 run for the Purple & White.

Amherst Posts Second Place Finish at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Amherst College women's golf team turned in a stellar two-day score of 649 to earn second place honors at the Vassar College Invitational at Casperkill Golf Club in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

After notching a combined score of 322 on day one to earn a share of the lead with Williams College after 18 holes, Amherst followed with a combined total of 327 on day two to secure second place in the field of 12 teams with a final score of 649. The Purple & White finished 29 strokes ahead of third place Middlebury College.
