NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College
baseball team scored five runs in the first inning on its way to a 9-3
victory over Western New England University Thursday afternoon in
non-conference action at Sidell Stadium.
Senior shortstop Kevin Marciano
(Pepperell, Mass.) drove in two of Western New England's three runs in
the seventh inning with a two-run homer, his second of the season.
Seniors Matt Calzone (Middlebury, Conn.) and Doug Milne (Nesconset, N.Y.) and freshman Erik Lacaire (Worcester, Mass.) also had one hit each for the Golden Bears, who drop to 21-6 with the loss.
Wheaton's five first-inning runs came courtesy of junior Zachary Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass.),
who recorded a two-run single, and freshman Tyler Walsh (Cumberland, R.I.), who came up next and hit a three-run home run over the left center field fence.
Western New England got one run back in the third, when Milne led off
with a double to right center before eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
The Lyons answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning,
however, and added one more in the fifth. Marciano's two-run shot in the
seventh capped the scoring in the contest.
Senior Chris Casey (Milford, Mass.) got the start on the mound for Western New England, but lasted just 2.2 innings before giving way to freshman Paul Wetmore (Hamden, Conn.). Classmate Scott Hubener (Mendon, Mass.) and freshmen Liam Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) and Andrew Foley (Wilbraham, Mass.) each turned in one scoreless inning of relief.
Western New England will look to bounce back this weekend, as the Golden
Bears are scheduled to host Wentworth and Nichols in a pair of CCC
doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
