PHILADELPHIA – Marisa Romeo scored three goals in the game, including one off a free-position attempt with 33 seconds left, but the Harvard women's lacrosse team could not find the equalizer, falling at No. 15/17 Penn by a score of 8-7 Saturday afternoon.
Alexis Nicolia added two scores, and Kelly Weis recorded seven saves in net for the Crimson, which
sees its record slip to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League. Alex Condon netted a hat trick, and Britt Brown made seven saves for the Quakers (9-3, 3-1 Ivy).
With her three goals, Romeo moves to 10th in program history with 141 career points (109-32-141).
Less than a minute after Penn scored the game's first goal, Nicolia knotted it up, 1-1, with an unassisted tally at 19:03. With 15:26 remaining, Romeo notched her first of the game to give the Crimson a 2-1 edge.
Following a 4-0 run for the Quakers, Ali Thaler scored off a pass from Maeve McMahon to bring the Crimson back within two, 5-3, at the 9:13 mark. Romeo tacked on another score for Harvard, making it a 5-4 contest with 5:40 to go in the first.
With the Quakers holding a 6-4 advantage, Audrey Todd fired for a goal with 22:24 remaining in the second, keeping Harvard within one score. On a free-position attempted with 15:56 left to play, Nicolia beat Brown with a shot, as the Crimson trailed, 7-6.
With 33 seconds left, Romeo capitalized on a free-position shot to make it 8-7, but the Crimson could not inch closer, as Penn held on for the victory.
The Quakers held the final count in shots, 20-19, and draw controls, 11-6, while the Crimson led in ground balls, 17-15, and was 12-of-15 on clear attempts. Marina Burke and Nekele McCall paced the Crimson with three ground balls apiece.
The Crimson will return home for back-to-back home games, beginning with a midweek non-conference contest against No. 14/15 Boston College Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network.
