New London, Conn. - The Springfield
College men's tennis team was edged by the Coast Guard Academy, 5-4, in
New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on
Wednesday afternoon.
Springfield's number two doubles team of Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) produced an 8-3 win as the Pride trailed 2-1 after doubles play.
Romaine, Honda, and Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.)
accounted for all three of Springfield's singles wins at the top three
spots. DeVarennes grinded out a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-4 win at No. 1, while
Romaine rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2. Honda added a
6-0, 3-6, 6-4 win for the visitors playing at No. 3.
The Pride will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Wheaton for an important league showdown beginning at 1:00 pm.
