Strong Offense Fuels Springfield College Softball to NEWMAC Doubleheader Sweep of Wheaton

Norton, Mass. - April 7, 2018 - The Springfield College softball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Pride defeated Wheaton twice in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Clark Softball Field. The Pride defeated the Lyons, 16-1, in game one, before routing the hosts, 10-0, in game two, which was limited to five innings.

Leading the Pride on the day was junior Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.), as she went 5-for-9 at the plate with six RBI and two runs scored, while also picking up her sixth win of the season in game two. Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) and Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.) each had six hits on the day, while Drobiak notched her conference-leading eighth home run of the season.

Springfield College's next scheduled game is on Friday, April 13 as the Pride will host two games with Clark on Potter Field beginning at 3 p.m.

Babson Uses Fourth-Quarter Push to Rally Past Springfield College Men's Lacrosse, 11-8

Babson Park, Mass. - April 7, 2018 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell to Babson, 11-8, on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field, as the Pride surrendeder six unanswered goals in the final quarter to suffer its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) loss of the season. Springfield College is now 6-4 overall with a 1-1 mark in league play, while Babson improves to 5-5 on the year with a 2-0 record against league opponents.

Babson scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to overcome a three-goal deficit and escape with the 11-8 victory. Babson outshot the Pride, 46-35 over 60 minutes of play and picked up 42 ground balls compared to Springfield's 34. In net, senior goalkeeper Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) made 10 saves, while his counterparts, Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Center, N.Y.) and Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) combined for 10 saves in the win.

Springfield College Baseball Completes NEWMAC West Division Sweep of Coast Guard with 11-0 Victory

New London, Conn. - April 8, 2018 - Wrapping up a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) West Division series on Sunday afternoon, the Springfield College baseball team shut out Coast Guard en route to an 11-0 victory over the Bears on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride is now 17-5-2 overall with a 6-2 mark in NEWMAC play, while Coast Guard is now 6-11 on the year with a 0-8 record against league opponents. The Pride's 17 wins marks the most amount of wins out of the Springfield College baseball team since the 2014 season when it notched 21 victories.

Springfield College Men's Tennis Falls to Coast Guard, 8-1, in NEWMAC Opener

Springfield, Mass. - April 4, 2018 - The Springfield College men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Coast Guard to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play in the Springfield College Field House on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pride, which were trailing the match 2-1 following doubles, received a win from the team of Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) and Court Honda (Morioka, Japan), who defeated Coast Guard's Tom Hackett (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Adam Bahney (Myerstown, Pa.), 9-8(8). 

Moving to singles, Romaine dropped a marathon match at No. 1 singles to Hackett, 7-6(3), 5-7, 7-5, before Honda fell to John Hu (Plainsboro, N.J.), 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles spot. Zack Keene (Feeding Hills, Mass.) played a hard-fought match at the No. 4 singles spot, but fell to Kyle Fager (Spokane, Wash.), 6-3, 6-2. The Pride would fall at the No. 5 and No. 6 spot as well to wrap up the match.

Corsano Breaks Program's Career Scoring Record; Springfield Women's Lacrosse Upends Coast Guard, 17-6

New London, Conn. - April 7, 2018 - Senior attacker Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) produced her second-consecutive five-goal performance on Saturday afternoon, breaking the Springfield College women's lacrosse program record for goals in a career, as the Pride defeated Coast Guard, 17-6, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

With the win, the Pride is now 7-5 overall with a 2-1 mark in the NEWMAC, while the Bears fall to 8-3 on the year, with a 2-1 record against league opponents. Corsano, who came into the game with 159 career goals, pushed her four-year total to 164, surpassing the previous record holder, Holly Carmody, who had 159 goals from 2003-2006.

Baseball Comes From Behind to Defeat Becker, 6-5, in Non-Conference Play

Springfield, Mass. - April 5, 2018 - The Springfield College baseball climbed back from a three-run deficit to overcome Becker, 6-5, in non-conference play on a windy Thursday afternoon at Archie Allen Field. With the win, the Pride is now 14-5-2 on the year while the Hawks fall to 5-14 overall.

The Pride received an impressive pitching performance in relief from Kenny Walton (New Providence, R.I.), who came on after the fourth inning and pitched 5.0 frames, giving up just three hits en route to his first win of the season. Joe Gamache (Lebanon, Conn.) started the game and went for 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and no earned runs while also striking out four.

Offensively, the Pride was led by Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.), who combined for four hits and five runs scored on the afternoon. Cooney, along with Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.), Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) and Alex Denoyelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) all collected RBI in the win.

Becker scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead over Springfield College, but the hosts responded in the bottom half of the inning when Shade scored on an error from the catcher, before Cooney trotted home on an RBI single from Bleakley, making it 2-2 after one. The Hawks pushed its run total to five in the top of the second on an error in right field with the bases loaded, resulting in three runs for the visitors.

Shade led off the fifth inning with an infield single, before moving into scoring position on a passed ball. From there, Cooney ripped a single to drive in Shade, making it 5-3, before Cooney stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. From there, Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) walked, before Cooney scored on an error from the pitcher, cutting the Pride's deficit to one.

Springfield College went back to work in the bottom of the seventh as Cooney led off the inning with a single to right, before Joao and Marcelino Diaz (Hartford, Conn.) got on base to load the bags. Next up, Drabinski walked, bringing home Cooney from third, before Denoyelle drew four balls as well, resulting in the game-winning run for the Pride.

From there, Walton would settle in, retiring six of the next seven batters to seal the victory.

Wheaton Blanks Springfield Baseball, 5-0, in NEWMAC Play

Springfield, Mass. - April 4, 2018 - The Springfield College baseball team fell to visiting Wheaton College, 5-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Archie Allen Field. With the loss, the Pride is now 13-5-2 overall with a 3-2 mark in conference play, while the Lyons, which were the home team in Wednesday's contest, climb above .500, and are now 10-9 overall with a 5-1 record against league foes.

Springfield College's Nick Naples (Kensington, Conn.) suffered his first loss of the season as he pitched 3.0 innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs, while Dakota Aldrich (Ellington, Conn.) came on and pitched 3.1 frames, giving up just a pair of hits. Fletcher Comment (Westbrook, Conn.) picked up four outs late in the game before Ken Manero (Hudson, Mass.) picked up the Pride's final out of the day.

Wheaton's Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, Mass.) improved to 2-0 on the mound as he pitched 8.0 strong innings, giving up just four hits, before John Mikosz (Southington, Conn.) came on for the final inning, striking out a pair to preserve the win.

Wheaton would get two in the bottom of the first, one of which was an RBI off the bat of Bryant Salkind (Rochester, Mass.), before Conor Gammond (Spring Lake, N.J.) drove in Nick Raposo (Johnston, R.I.) in the bottom of the third to give the Lyons a 3-0 lead.

Raposo drove a ball deep to center, which was caught, but Willy Boyd (Orleans, Mass.) trotted home for Wheaton's fourth run of the day, before the Lyons tacked on their final run in the bottom of the fifth on a ground out to short off the bat of Trevor Marques (Lincoln, R.I.).

Springfield College rallied in the top of the ninth inning, as Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk, before Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) and Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) loaded the bases, but Mikosz was able to force the last two outs of the game to preserve the shutout.

Springfield Field Hockey Earns No. 1 GPA Across All Divisions; 21 Student-Athletes Garner NFHCA Individual Accolades

Chandler, Ariz. - April 3, 2018 - The Springfield College field hockey program was recognized for its hard work in the classroom by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFCHA), as it earned the ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award for the sixth time in the last eight seasons. 

Of the 133 Division III field hockey programs that earned ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team honors, Springfield College earned the best grade-point average in the nation, as it posted a cumulative GPA of 3.78. In fact, the Pride's cumulative GPA of 3.78 was the highest across all divisions in the NCAA.

Additionally, the Pride had 21 of its 22 student-athletes named to the 2017 ZAG Field Hockey / NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, which recognizes student-athletes that have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

From the 2017 team, the honorees included: Kirsten Oliver (Vernon Center, N.Y.), Tirzah McMillan (Haddonfield, N.J.), Belle Copponi (Dover, Mass.), Hannah Boylan (Mansfield, Mass.), Emily Knobel (North Attleboro, Mass.), Amanda Picozzi (Wyoming, R.I.), Taylor Field (Eastham, Mass.), Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Paige Laperle (Auburn, Mass.), Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, Mass.), Gabby Guerard (Derry, N.H.), Morgan Bronk (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), Taylor Low (Longmeadow, Mass.), Patricia Murphy (Wilbraham, Mass.), Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.), Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.), MaryKate Pestana (Enfield, Conn.), Megan Goyda (Sandy Hook, Conn.), Allie Skinner (Mansfield, Mass.), Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, Conn.) and Lauren Trifone (Milton, Mass.).

Of those 21 student-athletes honored, two members of the field hockey program were named ZAG Field Hockey / NFHCA Division III National Scholars of Distinction, which is given to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.90 or higher.Those honorees include: Gabby Guerard and Kirsten Oliver. Guerard has now collected the honor for the second-straight season.

Additionally, five student-athletes have been recognized for four-consecutive years, including Sweet and Mahoney.

Springfield College Three Pitchers Combine for One-Hit Shutout; Baseball Defeats MCLA, 7-0

Springfield, Mass. - March 28, 2018 - The Springfield College baseball team continued its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon, as the Pride ran past MCLA, 7-0, in non-conference play on Archie Allen Field. The victory boosts the Pride's record to 12-3-2 while the Trailblazers drop to 6-4 on the season. 

An incredible combined one-hit pitching performance from Nick Naples (Berlin, Conn.), Fletcher Comment (Westbrook, Conn.) and Ken Manero (Hudson, Mass) led the way while the Pride put seven runs on the board on the offensive side. This marks the ninth time this season that the Pride have put up seven or more runs in a game. Naples was credited with the win after he threw 6.0 innings of no hit baseball before being replaced by Comment and Manero, who finished out the game.

At the plate, Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) led the charge with three RBI, while Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) both had a multi-hit days en route to the Pride's fourth win in a row. 

The first three innings of the game went by with only one hit recorded by either team. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Pride would push a run across the board when Joao scored on a hard hit ground ball by Rivest. In the sixth, Springfield would add two more runs on a single through the left side that scored Gleason and Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.). The next inning, the Pride would break the game open when Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) would single and then steal second and third to put him just 90 feet away with no outs. A walk, followed by Joao and Gleason both driving balls up the middle and an RBI walk would push three more runs across and extend the Pride's lead to 7-0.

Manero threw a flawless inning in the bottom of the ninth to shut the door for the Pride and ensure a shutout.

Eight Members of Springfield Women's Gymnastics to Compete at NCGA National Championships This Weekend

Springfield, Mass. - March 21, 2018 - The Springfield College women's gymnastics team will have eight student-athletes represent the Pride on the national stage this upcoming weekend at the 2018 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships, which will be hosted in Blake Arena beginning on Friday, March 23 at 5 p.m. EDT.

On Friday, freshman Ali Rushlow (Worcester, Mass.) will make her debut on the national stage during the team and all-around competition, as she took third overall at the NCGA East Regional Championships with a career-best 38.000 to book her ticket to nationals. Rushlow, who will also compete on vault in the Individual Championships on Saturday, will be joined by Tali Twomey (Cotuit, Mass.) and Taylor Jackson (Ocean, N.J.) on the apparatus, as Jackson qualified for Nationals when she tied the Springfield College program record with a 9.725 at the NCGA East Regional Championships on Saturday, March 10.

Senior Briana Kerr (Bolton, Conn.) qualified for nationals on the uneven bars for the fourth time in her career, as the Physical Therapy major was ranked one of the top five student-athletes in the country heading into the East Regionals with a seasonal-average score of 9.6188. Kerr will be joined by the 2018 NCGA East Region Gymnast of the Year, Jess Clemens (South Setauket, N.Y.), who will also compete on the balance beam come Saturday. 

Also qualifying on the balance beam was senior Lauren White (Littleton, Mass.) and sophomore Sarah Murphy (Norwell, Mass.), who both tied for second overall on the beam at the NCGA East Regional Championships with matching scores of 9.650. 

Lastly, Twomey earned a spot at nationals for the second-consecutive season in the floor exercise, an event that she earned her first-career All-America honor on in 2017. Twomey's seasonal-average score of 9.7438 helped land her a spot at nationals, as the sophomore will be joined by senior Madi Bowen (Sunderland, Mass.), who will perform on the national stage for the first time in her career. 

The two-day event will feature student-athletes from the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA), which is the governing body for Division III women's gymnastics. Video streaming will be available courtesy of FloGymnastics.

First-Half Scoring Lifts Women's Soccer Over Clark, 4-0

Worcester, Mass. - October 11, 2016 - Three goals in a span of 6:09 in the first half helped the Springfield College women's soccer program defeat Clark University, 4-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday night at the Granger Soccer Turf.
With the win, the Pride improves to 7-3-2 on the year, with a 3-1-2 mark in the NEWMAC, while the Cougars are now 7-5-1 on the year, with a 1-4 record in league play. Springfield College held a 21-11 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, while Clark held a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.

Junior forward Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.) netted a pair of goals to bring her season total to six, while the Pride also received scoring from Mary Silva (Ludlow, Mass.) and Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who also picked up an assist in the contest. In net, junior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) posted three saves, while Brooke Fairman (Huntington, Mass.) came on in relief and made one stop to preserve the shutout.

All of the Pride's first-half scoring came in a span of 6:09, as Silva notched her third goal of the season 22:41 into the contest when Quiles sent the junior in behind the Clark back line for an easy finish, before Coady scored her first of the game on a play where Silva and Quiles were both credited with assists.

With 15:28 remaining in the first half, Quiles posted her fifth goal of the year when Dakota Kelly (Bethany, Conn.) passed a ball to the top of the middle of the box, that was contained by Quiles, who then turned and fired a shot into the back of the net to make it 3-0, heading into the halftime break.
Springfield College's lone goal of the second half came with 22:38 remaining in the contest when first-year Mackenzie Luiz (Newington, Conn.) set up Coady for her team-leading sixth goal of the season to seal the 4-0 win for the Pride.

Up next, Springfield College will travel to Emerson College on Saturday, October 15 for a 1 p.m. contest with the Lions.

Springfield Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw With Smith College

Springfield, Mass. - October 4, 2016 - The Springfield College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie with Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday night at Brock-Affleck Field.

With the tie, Springfield College now has an overall record of  5-3-2, with a conference mark of 1-1-2, while the Pioneers are now 7-1-4 on the year and 1-1-2 in the NEWMAC. The Pride held a dominating 29-2 shot advantage throughout 110 minutes of play, including an 8-0 margin in the overtime periods. Additionally, Springfield College had nine corner kicks to the Pioneers' two.

Springfield College Recognizes Outstanding Athletic Year At 2016 All Sports Recognition Night

Springfield, Mass. – Celebrating all of the outstanding athletic achievements from the 2015-16 academic year, Springfield College recognized the most outstanding performances and student-athletes at the annual All Sports Recognition Night held on Tuesday evening in Blake Arena.

The evening marked another especially successful year in athletics at Springfield College. Headlining the group was senior Jon Zirna (East Amherst, N.Y.), who became just the third Springfield College student-athlete in the past 32 years to reach the NCAA Division I Men's Gymnastics Championship individual finals at Ohio State.  The men's volleyball program had another remarkable season, as the team finished runner-up at the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championships, while the women's soccer team won NEWMAC Championship.  Additionally, the women's volleyball team reached the NCAA Division III Championship Sweet 16 for the third time in six years and the men's soccer team captured their second ECAC Division III New England title in the past three campaigns.

Individually, Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.) earend a pair of NCAA All-America honors in the pool as she took fourth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 breast.  Courtney Luscier (Pittsfield, Mass.) placed seventh in the 60 meter dash, Marissa DeAngelo (Brookfield, Conn.) picked up a trio of NCGA All-America honors, and Tyler Keane (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Jake Benedict (Pukalski, N.Y.) each won NCAA Regional titles in wrestling.

In addition, the Dr. Craig Poisson announced that the "True Pride Challenge" was an overwhelming success, with the Friends of Springfield College Athletics donor base growing by nearly 40% during the three-day challenge in April.

Springfield Softball Falls Twice to Keene State in Regular-Season Finale

Keene, N.H. - Closing out its 2016 regular season, the Springfield College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Keene State at the Owl Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

With the losses, Springfield falls to 23-17 on the year, while Keene State is now 17-13 overall. The Pride fell in the first game, 8-0, in five innings, before dropping a 3-2 decision in the second.

Up next, the Pride will travel to MIT to take on Wheaton in the first round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championshp Tournament. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Springfield Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Clark, 17-3

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team netted 13 unanswered goals to race past visiting Clark University, 17-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday night at Stagg Field.

Springfield improves to 8-7, 6-0 in conference play, while the Cougars drop to 9-5, 2-4.

The Pride put together a dominanting 60 minutes of play, owning a 41-24 advantage in shots and a 40-17 edge in ground balls, winning 18-of-22 face-offs, holding the Cougars to 1-for-7 on man-up opportunities, and limiting Clark to just 14-for-26 on clears.

Springfield, Mass. - Playing three games with WPI over the next two days, the Springfield College baseball team dropped the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) West Division series opener, 12-4, on Berry-Allen Field on Friday.

With the loss, Springfield falls to 11-19-1 on the season, with a conference mark of 4-11, while the Engineers improve to 23-10 overall, 10-5 in the league.

Starting his final game on Berry-Allen Field, senior Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) pitched 6.2 innings and struck out two, while Joey Gamache (Lebanon, Conn.) came on in relief, and pitched the final 1.1 innings, picking up a pair of strikeouts.

Wellesley, Mass. - The Springfield College softball team dropped a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contests to Wellesley College on Friday afternoon.

With the losses, Springfield is now 23-11 on the year, and holds a conference record of 9-7, and with the win, Wellesley is now 15-15 overall and 8-8 in the NEWMAC. Springfield lost the first of two, 7-3, and was blanked in the second, falling 3-0.

Springfield Women's Lacrosse Sails Past Smith, 12-4

Springfield, Mass.  - Led by four goals from sophomore attack Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.), the Springfield College women's lacrosse team posted a 12-4 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday evening at Stagg Field.

With the win, Springfield improved to 10-4 overall, with a conference record of 5-1, while the Pioneers fell to 4-10 on the year, with a mark of 0-6 in the league.

Springfield held a 13-4 advantage in draw controls, while also out-shooting Smith, 34-11.

Springfield Men's Tennis Clinches Spot In NEWMAC Championship With 7-2 Win Over Clark

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield College men's tennis team clinched a spot in the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship with a 7-2 victory over Clark University at Appleton Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

The win boosts Springfield's record to 8-6, 3-2 in NEWMAC play.  Under the direction of first-year head coach Chad Stoloff, this marks the most wins for Springfield in NEWMAC play since 2008, and the Pride earned a spot in the NEWMAC Championship field for the first time since the 2012 campaign was the fourth-seed.

The Pride began today's match earning all three doubles points, highlighted by a gritty effort at the top squad of Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) and Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.).  Facing an early 5-2 decifit, the duo rattled off the final six games en route to an 8-5 victory.  Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) cruised to an 8-4 win at No. 2 and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) and Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) notched an 8-6 victory at No. 3.

Springfield picked up wins at the top four singles spots to clinch the critical NEWMAC victory.  DeVarennes eased his way to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, while Romaine added a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2.  Honda registered a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3, and Danielwicz sealed the afternoon's triumph with a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 4.

Springfield will conclude on Saturday afternoon when it travels to face Babson for a 1:00 pm contest.

Springfield College Softball Picks Up Two Victories Over Westfield State in Non-Conference Play

Westfield, Mass. - Led by impressive performances from Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.) and Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.), the Sprignfield College softball team won a pair of non-conference games against Westfield State on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the wins, Springfield is now 23-11 on the year, while the Owls fall to 11-18 overall. The Pride took the first of two, 5-3, in nine innings, before turning around and beating Westfield State in the second, 8-0, in six innings.
