Strong Pitching Can’t Lift Eagles Past No. 16 Virginia

GAME INFORMATION

Records: Virginia (20-12, 7-6 ACC) at Boston College (14-11, 3-8 ACC)

BC HIGHLIGHTS
  • Freshman right-hander Jacob Stevens allowed just one hit through six innings and did not give up an earned run. He walked five, struck out six and walked in one unearned run. In 40 career innings, he has allowed just two earned runs.
  • Sophomore Donovan Casey tallied the only hit for the Eagles. He also drew a walk.

KEY PLAYS
The Cavaliers plated a run in the third on two walks and two errors and it would be all they would need as UVA pitcher Connor Jones allowed just one hit in a complete-game effort. He walked four and struck out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Virginia got on board in the third by taking advantage of BC miscues. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two errors. Stevens got the second out on an infield fly but walked in the first run of the game. He forced another pop up to get out of the inning.
  • The Cavs added two runs in the ninth as redshirt sophomore right-hand reliever Bobby Skogsbergh hit lead-off batter Justin Novak. Adam Haseley laid down a bunt and senior third baseman Gabriel Hernandez overthrew first base, allowing Novak to score. Haseley ended up on third on the three-base error and Ernie Clement plated him with a bloop single behind the shortstop. Sophomore lefty Kevin Connor entered the game and got a fly ball and strikeout looking for the first two outs. Junior catcher Nick Sciortino ended the inning by catching his seventh baserunner stealing.
  • In the ninth, junior pinch hitter Chris Balogh drew a walk to start the inning and sophomore Jake Palomaki followed with a grounder to second. The Hoos got the lead runner for the out but Palomaki beat the throw to first. After an infield popup for the second out, junior Michael Strem got a four-pitch walk to put two on with two outs. Jones got Casey swinging to end the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Florida State's Luke Weaver is the last opposing pitching to throw a one-hitter against Boston College. He did so on March 28, 2014 in a 6-0 victory.
  • The Cavs are now 7-2 against the Eagles in Chestnut Hill.
  • BC is now 2-6 against top-25 teams in 2016. The two wins came against then eighth-ranked NC State on March 11 and 13.
  • The Eagles made three errors for the fourth time this season. They are 1-3 in those games. They are 6-2 when they do not make an error.
  • The Eagles have been shut out three times in 2016 – all against ACC opponents: at Pittsburgh, vs. No. 22 Florida State and vs. No. 16 Virginia.
