Season-High 13 Walks Powers 16-4 Victory Over Providence

The Eagles have now logged seven straight wins for the first time since 2016

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Boston College softball team scored a season high 16 runs to defeat Providence, 16-4, in five innings behind a pair of home runs by senior Chloe Sharabba and freshman CC Cook and a season-high 13 walks as a team on the night.
 
The Eagles (16-15) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when they scored five runs, powered by a lead-off double by Sharabba, a single by Cook, a bunt single by junior Lexi DiEmmanuele and a single by freshman Cami Sellers. A two-run home run in the third inning by Sharabba would increase BC's lead to 7-0. Providence tacked on three runs in the third inning, but it would not be enough as Cook added another home run in the fourth inning. Six walks in the fifth inning alone helped BC score six more runs and take a commanding 16-4 lead over the Friars.
 
Senior Jessica Dreswick started the game for BC. She threw three innings, allowing four hits and three runs. Redshirt junior Allyson came on to pitch in the fourth, logging only one earned run. Every out Frei recorded on the night was a strikeout as the right-hander finished the game with six K's.
 
The Eagles return to ACC action when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on NC State beginning with a double-header on Friday, April 6 at 4 p.m.

BC Highlights:

• The seven-game win streak is the longest of the season for the Eagles. The last time the Maroon and Gold earned seven straight wins was when they won seven consecutive games against St. John's, Western Illinois, Fordham, Mercer, Iowa State, Fordham and Mercer on Feb. 27 – March 6 during the 2016 season.
• The 16 runs scored are the most runs scored for BC this season.
• The Eagles batted around in the first inning of the game – marking the first time this season that BC has done so.
• The victory marks the third time this season that BC has run-ruled its opponent. The Eagles defeated Virginia, 8-0, in five innings on March 23 and beat Syracuse, 12-2, in six innings on March 31.
• BC has now logged at least 10 hits in six of the games this season. Having recorded 10 hits at Syracuse last weekend and 10 hits tonight vs. Providence, the Eagles have collected back-to-back 10 hit games for the first time this season.
• The BC batters walked a season-high 13 times.
• Eight of the starters scored at least one run.
• Redshirt junior Allyson Frei made her 100^th career appearance on the mound.
• Sharabba picked up her team-leading ninth double of the season and her team-leading fourth home run, including her second in the last two games. The senior has collected a hit in 22 of the 30 games this season and has reached base safely in all but four games. Her two RBIs on the night put her tied with the team lead for the season at 15. Sharabba leads the Eagles in multi-hit games with 12.
• Cook hit her second home run of the season in the fourth inning. She finished the night with a team-leading three hits and three runs scored. The rookie also recorded her sixth multi-hit game of the season and third multi-RBI game.
• Cook and freshman Cami Sellers tied for the team lead with three RBIs on the night.
• Senior Jordan Chimento extended her hitting streak to eight games and she has now reached base safely in nine straight games.

Turning Point:.
BC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning and it would lead for the rest of the game, scoring in every inning except the second. A two-run home run by Sharabba in the third inning coupled with a six-run fifth inning gave the Eagles a commanding lead.

How it Happened:

• BC got the scoring started early in the first inning when Sharabba led off with a double to left center field and then quickly advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Annie Murphy drew a walk to put runners on the corners for BC. Cook singled up the middle to score Sharabba. Both Murphy and Cook advanced on a wild pitch. Junior Carly Severini drew a walk to load the bases. Every runner advanced a base on a passed ball, scoring Murphy. DiEmmanuele reached base on a bunt single, driving home Cook. DiEmmanele stole second and Severini scored on an error by the catcher. Sellers singled to left center to score DiEmmanuele and put the Eagles up 5-0.
• Chimento led off the third inning with a walk. Two batters later, Sharabba blasted a home run over the left field wall to put BC up 7-0.
• Providence got on the score board in the third inning when Taylor Stephen led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Annie Flego singled to first base to put runners on the corners for the Friars. Compton shot a double to left center field to score Stephen. Brittney Veler singled to right field to drive home, scoring two runs and making the score, 7-3.
• BC added to its lead in the fourth inning when Cook led off with a solo home run over the left field wall. Two batters later, DiEmmanuele drew a walk. Sellers shot a double down the right field line, scoring DiEmmanuele from first base. Chimento reached base on a walk. Sophomore Olivia Markopoulos reached first base on an error by the first baseman, allowing Sellers to score from second and putting BC up 10-3.
• With one out, Cook, Severini and freshman Emme Martinez each drew a walk to load the bases for BC in the fifth inning. DiEmmanuele reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Cook to score. Sellers drew a walk to force home Belinskas, who came in to pinch run for Severini. Chimento reached base on another walk, which allowed Sellers to advance to second, DiEmmanuele to advance to third, and Martinez to score. DiEmmanuele stole home to score the fourth run of the inning. After junior Allyson Moore hit a deep fly ball to right field, Chimento advanced on a passed ball and Sellers scored on the play. Back-to-back singles by Murphy and Cook allowed Chimento to score, putting BC up 16-3.
• Emma Lee walked to lead off the bottom of the inning. Paige Mulry doubled to left field to put runners on first and second for Providence with nobody out. After Veler struck out swinging, Vanessa Portillo singled to drive home Lee, making the final score, 16-4.

BC will continue ACC play when it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to take on NC State at the Dail Softball Stadium beginning with a double-header on Friday, April 6. The first game on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Boston College: Extra-Inning Loss Surrenders 2018 Beanpot Title

The Eagles won’t hold onto the Beanpot for the fourth straight year

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team lost in 11 innings to Harvard, 7-4, on Wednesday evening in the first round of the Baseball Beanpot Tournament. The Eagles (9-17) have held the Beanpot for the last three years, but the extra-innings loss to the Crimson (10-13) surrenders the title for 2018.
 
Redshirt junior Scott Braren led the way for the Eagles with two RBIs, including plating the tying run twice. Sophomore Jake Goodreau made his first career start at catcher, doubled and recorded his first career RBI. Freshman Chris Galland, batting in the lead-off spot for the first time, stole two bases to be a perfect 16-for-16 on the year and lead the ACC.
 
The BC pitching staff allowed 16 hits in the game, 15 of which were singles. The only extra-base hit was the 11th-inning home run.
 
The Eagles will play UMass in the Beanpot consolation game on Tuesday, April 10. Northeastern and Harvard will battle for the championship in the second game of the day.

• Sophomore right-hander Matt Gill allowed three runs in the first before settling in and holding the Crimson scoreless for the next five. He allowed eight hits and three runs, walked just one and tied a career-high with three strikeouts in his six-inning start.
• Redshirt junior Scott Braren tallied two game-tying RBIs for the Eagles. He was 1-for-4 with an outfield assist.
• Sophomore Jake Goodreau made his first career start behind the plate. He doubled, drew two walks and tallied his first career RBI.
• Sophomore Brian Dempsey had one hit in the game. He has at least one hit in 19 of the Eagles' 26 games this season and in 33 of the last 46 games played, dating back to last year. He has reached base safely in the 24 of the 26 games this season.
• Freshman Chris Galland led off for the first time. He had one hit, one run, one walk and he stole two bases to be a perfect 16-for-16 on the base path, leading the ACC.
• Senior Jake Palomaki drew three walks in a 1-for-3 day. He scored a run and stole a base. His 135 career walks are first in BC record books, his 52 career stolen bases are second, his 133 career runs are tied for seventh all-time and he has reached base safely in 336 games, good for third.

 
KEY PLAYS

• With two on in the 11^th inning, Patrick Robinson hit a home run over the left-field wall to give the Crimson a three-run lead.
• RHP Grant Stone allowed just a two-out walk in the bottom of the inning to preserve the Harvard win.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Crimson scored three in the first off Gill to take an early lead. With runners on the corners after back-to-back singles, the first run came in on a wild pitch. After Gill got a strikeout for the first out of the inning, he gave up three more hits in a row to bring in two more Harvard runs. The righty picked off the runner at second for the second out and forced a grounder to short to end the inning.
• The Eagles got on the board in the sixth off reliever RHP Kevin Stone. They loaded the bases on two walks and a single and Goodreau drew a walk with one down to bring in the first BC run of the game. After a strikeout looking, Harvard went to the pen for LHP John MacLean. He got the Crimson out of the jam with a strikeout.
• BC tied the game in the seventh. Galland led off with a single and stole second. Palomaki drew a one-out walk and both runners moved into scoring position on a successful double steal. RHP Jack Mahala came in to face sophomore Dante Baldelli, who grounded one to short, allowing Galland to cross the plate. Baldelli landed on first after a bad throw from Buddy Mrowka. With Palomaki on third, Braren grounded out to first to bring in Palomaki and tie the game.
• The Crimson regained the lead the following inning with junior LHP Zach Stromberg on the mound. A lead-off single, sac bunt and hit back at the mound put runners on the corners. Redshirt freshman LHP Joey Walsh came into the game and pinch hitter Matt Rothenberg singled to right to bring in the go-ahead run. Braren hit Palomaki with the throw and he fired to third to get the runner trying to advance. Walsh ended the inning with a grounder.
• BC forced extras with a run in the ninth off RHP Kieran Shaw. Dempsey started the inning with a single to right and moved to third on a one-out hit by Baldelli. Braren plated the tying run with a sac fly to center. Shaw got a fly ball to center to send the game to extras.
• Harvard took the lead in the 11^th with junior RHP Thomas Lane on the mound. After he started the inning with a strikeout looking, Lane put two on with a hit by pitch and a walk. Robinson hit a home run over the left-field wall to give the Crimson a 7-4 lead.

 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• For the 11^th time this season, the Eagles did not commit an error.
• The Eagles drew a season-high 10 walks in the game.
• BC has played in three extra-inning games in 2018 and has not earned a victory. The longest was an 18-inning contest to Northeastern on March 20.
• The BC pitching staff allowed 16 hits in the game, 15 of which were singles. The only extra-base hit was the 11^th-inning home run.

• The Eagles are now 37-17-1 all-time in the Baseball Beanpot, which began in 1990.
• BC leads all four teams with 12 titles and won the last three in a row.
• BC is now 14-5-1 against Harvard in the Beanpot and 44-34 in the all-time series. BC had won the last four meetings, including last year's Beanpot Championship at Fenway Park in a rain-shortened, five-inning, 3-2 contest.

Three Eagles record hat tricks in BC's first-ever win in Charlottesville

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In a battle of top-10 teams, the third-ranked Boston College lacrosse team claimed its first-ever win at Klockner Stadium with a 15-12 victory at No. 7 Virginia on Saturday afternoon to remain perfect on the season and push its program-record winning streak to 13 games.
 
Three Eagles – Dempsey Arsenault, Tess Chandler and Kaileen Hart – netted hat tricks as the Eagles won their first road game ever in Charlottesville and claimed a second straight win over UVA for the first time ever.  
 
Less than 10 minutes into the first half, Boston College (13-0, 4-0 ACC) trailed 4-1, but five straight goals gave the Eagles a 6-4 lead with 9:32 to go in the period. Virginia (8-3, 3-2 ACC) scored twice more in the next three minutes, but both teams were held off the board in the final six minutes of the stanza and the teams went into the break knotted at 6-6.
 
BC extended its lead to 8-6 in the second before UVA's Chloe Jones snapped the Cavaliers' almost 17:00 scoreless draught to cut the lead to 8-7 with 19:33 to go. The Eagles responded with a 6-1 run – behind six different goal scorers – to put the game out of reach at 14-8 with 4:30 remaining. Virginia's Chloe Mueller netted three straight goals in 1:35 to cut the BC lead to 14-11, but the teams traded goals inside the final 1:32 as the Eagles came away with the win.
 
BC goalkeeper Lauren Daly made seven saves in the win, while UVA starter Rachel Vander Kolk made one save in 16:33 of starting action before giving way to Charlie Campbell, who stopped five shots in 42:48 of action to close the game.

• The Eagles held the Cavaliers – who were ranked 11th nationally in scoring offense coming into the game  at 15.3 goals per game – to just 12 goals, marking the 12th time in 13 games this season the BC defense has limited an opponent to 12 goals or fewer … it tied UVA's second-lowest goal total of the year

• The Eagles were 12-of-13 in clearance attempts on the day, and the BC defense swarmed the Cavaliers, limiting UVA to just 11 on the day, including a 2-of-5 success rate in the second half
• BC out-shot Virginia 31 to 24

 
TURNING POINT
Entering the second half tied, BC held UVA scoreless for 10:27 and used an 8-2 run – including a 5-0 spurt by five different players – in the first 25:00 of the period to extend the insurmountable lead.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Virginia opened the game with a 4-1 lead before the Eagles ran off five straight goals to claim a 6-4 advantage with 9:32 to go in the first. However, Virginia used two goals over the next three minutes to pull even and the teams were scoreless in the last 6:34 of the half
• BC held the Cavs off the board for the first 10:27 of the second half and out-scored Virginia 8-2 over the first 25:10 of the second to extend an insurmountable lead
• During the second-half run, the Eagles forced five turnovers in the midfield and won five-straight draw controls to prevent the Cavs from taking a shot in 12:06
• Virginia's Sammy Mueller scored three quick goals to pull the Cavs within three at 14-11, but Sam Apuzzo tallied an empty-net goal – her only point of the game – to reclaim a four-goal advantage with 1:31 to play before Ana Hagerup wrapped up the scoring with her tally with 00:39 to play.
