New London, Conn. - Freshmen Evan Moore (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) both picked up a pair of RBI, and Ken Manero (Hudson, Mass.)
was effective in relief on the mound, as the Springfield College
baseball team picked up a 7-2 win over Coast Guard in New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Friday night.
With the win, Springfield is now 8-10-1 overall, and 2-4 in the
conference, while the Bears are 8-13 on the year, with a mark of 1-3 in
the league.
Along with Moore's two RBI, the freshman was 2-for-4 at the dish and scored two runs, while senior Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) also picked up a pair of hits in the win.
Freshman Brian Johnson (East Haddam, Conn.)
got the nod for the Pride, and pitched 4.1 innings
of six-hit, two-run
ball, but Manero came on to pitch 3.2 frames, holding the Bears hitless
while picking up three strikeouts. Freshman Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) came on to pick up the final three outs, and preserve the victory.
For Coast Guard, Eric Vrissis (Stamford, Conn.) took the loss, as he
pitched 6.1 innings, giving up six hits and four runs, while the
combination of Jack Brandt (Marlton, N.J.) and Luke Sniatkowski (Verona,
N.J.) pitched the final 2.2 frames, giving up three runs on as many
hits.
The Pride got to work early, as it tacked on two runs in the top of
the first inning when Wilcox singled to short, before an error allowed
him to advance to second and allowed Billy Peterson
(Wareham, Mass.) to cross the plate for Springfield's initial run,
before Drabinski flew out to center, but Moore tagged and scored to make
it 2-0, Pride.
After Coast Guard evened the score in the bottom of the third, Springfield regained a one-run lead when Colin King (Berlin, Conn.) reached on an error by the first basemen, which allowed Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) to score to make it 3-2, Springfield.
The Pride would add four more runs in the final three innings, as JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.)
score on a passed ball in the top of the seventh, Drabinski drew a walk
with the bases loaded in the eighth, and Moore had a two-run single to
center in the top of the ninth to ice the 7-2 win.
Up next, Springfield will return to Berry Allen Field and will take
on Coast Guard in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
