AMHERST, Mass. -
It was a Senior Day sweep for the UMass tennis team as the Minutewomen
defeated Rhode Island 7-0 at the Mullins Center Courts on Thursday
afternoon. Prior to the match, UMass honored its senior class of Carol Benito and Arielle Griffin.
The win improves UMass to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 matches.
It also marked the eighth consecutive win for the Minutewomen who close
out the regular season on Sunday at Fordham (3 p.m.).
Rhode Island (2-15, 0-3 A-10) entered Thursday's match down a player
fielding just five which gave
UMass a 1-0 lead on a default singles
point.
UMass saw Anna Woosley and Ruth Crawford win 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles match before Ana Yrazusta and Benito won 6-2 at No. 1 play to make the score 2-0.
The Minutewomen won all five singles matches in straight sets. Crawford won at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-3), while Arielle Griffin won at No. 2 singles after a victory in the first set and a retirement by URI's Taylor Holden in the second set.
At No. 3 singles, Woosley picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win for Benito at No. 4 action.
Laura Moreno closed out the scoring with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
