UMass Baseball Falls at Quinnipiac, 7-0

HAMDEN, Conn. - University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its Wednesday afternoon matchup at Quinnipiac by the score of 7-0 at QU Baseball Field. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 11-19, while the Bobcats improve to 17-23.

Quinnipiac opened up the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on four hits, including an RBI double by Matthew Oestreicher and an RBI single from Joseph Burns with two outs.

Burns drove in his second run of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly in the third and a solo home run by Brian Moskey brought the score to 5-0 in the sixth. The Bobcats later added two more runs on three hits in the eighth.

UMass managed just four hits in the contest, including doubles by junior Mike Hart and senior John Jennings in the first and fourth, respectively. Junior Jon Avallone contributed a single in the eighth and pinch hitter Matt Hosman singled in the ninth, as well.

Freshman Casey Aubin started on the mound for the Minutemen and took the loss (2-3), allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts over three innings of work. Quinnipiac starter Brandon Shileikis tossed six shutout innings en route to the win (3-0), allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two.

UMass will be back in action on Fri., Apr. 29, when the squad will open up its home Atlantic 10 series vs. Fordham at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - University of Massachusetts softball head coach Kristi Stefanoni earned her 50th career head coaching victory as the Minutewomen topped George Washington, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The Minutewomen (19-21, 11-5 A-10) were lead offensively by junior Tara Klee as she went 2-for-3, belting a two-run homer in the third inning and singling in the sixth inning.

The third-inning blast came after UMass already scored twice in the frame. Senior Taylor Carbone singled down the right field line to score redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza and freshman Kaitlyn Stavinoha for the first two runs of the game.

The Colonials (21-23, 8-9 A-10) scored two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning. George Washington executed a double steal and scored a run off of a defensive miscue, and Carlee Gray singled to drive in the second run.

Sophomore Meg Colleran (16-14) earned the win for the Minutewomen. The pitcher threw all seven innings in the victory, adding five strikeouts and allowing just two hits.

UMass travels to La Salle to take on the Explorers on Saturday for a doubleheader, with the series finale scheduled for Sunday.

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond used a second half flurry to cut the Minutewomen's lead to three, but the No. 19 UMass women's lacrosse team pulled away over the final 23:30 of play for an 18-10 win on Friday afternoon at Robins Stadium.

Despite the run, UMass (14-1, 7-0 A-10) never relinquished its wire-to-wire lead with the 18 goals the most ever scored against the Spiders.

Richmond (5-9, 1-6 A-10) did have the honor of becoming the first team this season to score double

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts softball topped Boston College, 4-2, on Thursday afternoon, at Sortino Field, in Amherst, Mass.

Junior Tara Klee hit a home run to left center field and walked twice in the Minutewomen (16-21) victory. The home run came in the first inning and gave UMass a 2-0 lead.

Boston College (21-20) grabbed two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Tatiana Cortez doubled and later scored as Jordan Chimento singled in the following at bat. Allyson Moore added an RBI single later in the inning to bring the score even.

Redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza walked to lead off the fifth inning for UMass. Senior Taylor Carbone followed with a single to left field that was misplayed by Annie Murphy. The miscue allowed Cozza to score from first base and give the Minutewomen a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth inning, junior Ashton Wince singled to lead off for the Minutewomen. Freshman Dana Barclay ran for Wince, and scored when classmate Kaitlyn Stavinoha doubled into the gap in right-center, giving UMass a 4-2 lead.

Sophomore Meg Colleran (14-14) earned the win for UMass. The pitcher threw 3.1 innings in relief of Carbone and allowed just four hits while striking out three.

University of Massachusetts Baseball Downs Harvard, 6-2 for Second Straight Win

NORTHBORO, Mass. - University of Massachusetts baseball pounded out 14 hits en route to a 6-2 victory over Harvard in the Beanpot Consolation Game at the New England Baseball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Minutemen’s second straight win moves the squad to 9-17 on the season, while the Crimson falls to 12-20 overall.

Harvard scored the first run of the day in the top of the first as Mitch Klug reached with a one-out double and scored on an error with two away.

Morris Leads UMass Baseball Past UConn, 9-5

The junior drove in five runs and scored two to help the Minutemen snap the Huskies six-game win streak.
 AMHERST, Mass. - A monster day at the plate by junior Dylan Morris helped lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 9-5 victory over Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 8-17 on the season, while the Huskies snap a six-game winning streak and fall to 19-16.

Morris went 3-for-5 at the plate for UMass in the contest and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle while driving in five runs and scoring two on the afternoon. Senior John Jennings also had three RBI for the Minutemen, who pounded out 10 hits against UConn.

UMass Tennis Earns No. 2 Seed for Atlantic 10 Championship

Minutewomen receive first-round bye and will begin action on Friday, April 22 at 1:30 p.m.


AMHERST, Mass. - After posting a 14-6 regular-season record with a 3-0 mark against league foes, the UMass women's tennis team has been selected as the No. 2 seed for the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship. The Minutewomen finished the tournament last season as runner-ups to VCU which earned the No. 1 seed as the three-time defending champions.

The A-10 Championship will run Thursday, April 21 through Sunday, April 24 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, which has hosted the A-10 Men’s or Women's Championships the last four years (2012- 2015). Admission will be free for each day of competition.

As the No. 2 seed, the Minutewomen earned a first-round bye and will take on the winner of No. 7

AMHERST, Mass. - Unable to solve Saint Joseph’s starter Tim Brennan until the fifth inning, the University of Massachusetts baseball team fell to the Hawks, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 7-16 overall, 2-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph’s improves to 16-14 on the year and 5-3 in conference action.

The Hawks scored the first run of the contest in the top of the third. Peter Sitaras opened up the frame with a leadoff walk and stole second. Then with two away, Sitaras came home on an error when Deon Stafford, Jr. reached with an infield single and the ball was misplayed at first.

Saint Joseph’s broke the game open with back-to-back RBI doubles from Matt Maul and Cal Jadacki in the top of the fifth that pushed the score to 4-0. Jadacki drove in two more runs with a two-out single in the seventh that increased the margin to 6-0.

Junior Mike Geannelis ended Brennan’s perfect game bid with a double to right center with one out in the fifth. Senior John Jennings then broke up the shutout with his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh. Geannelis and Jennings combined for four of UMass’ five hits in the contest, both going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Freshman Justin Lasko threw 4.2 innings in his start and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts and took the loss (2-1) for the Minutemen. Brennan (4-0) tossed a complete game for the Hawks and struck out eight, while walking none.

University of Massachusetts baseball led early, but Saint Joseph’s scored three unanswered runs to pull past the Minutemen, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The setback in game one of the weekend series against the Hawks (15-14, 4-3 A-10) leaves the UMass at 7-15 on the year and 2-5 in Atlantic 10 play.
After neither team registered a hit over the first two innings, the Minutemen jumped out in front, 1-0, in the bottom of the third. Junior Jon Avallone dropped a double into the right field corner with one out, went to third on a single to left by sophomore Brett Evangelista and scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball off the bat of Dylan Morris.

Saint Joseph’s responded, though, by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. With Deon Stafford, Jr., and Charlie Coghlin on base via a pair of walks with two away, both runners came home on one play without a hit. Stafford scored on a wild pitch that also allowed Coghlin to advance from first to third. A wild throw to third resulted in Coghlin crossing the plate.

The Hawks added a third run in the top of the sixth. John Brue drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI single to left by Cal Jadacki.

Junior Ryan Moloney went 5.2 innings in his start for UMass and took the loss (1-4) after allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Senior Brandon Walsh fanned seven in 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. Saint Joseph’s starter Lucas Rollins earned the win (1-3), going six innings and surrendering one run on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Ryan Kelly retired the side in order in the ninth to collect a save (3).

No. 19 Women's Lax Sprints Past St. Bonaventure 23-2

Hannah Murphy breaks school record with 14 draw controls.

AMHERST, Mass. - Hannah Murphy set a new school record for draw controls as the No. 19 UMass women's lacrosse team defeated St. Bonaventure 23-2 on Friday afternoon at Garber Field. The 23 goals for the Minutewomen were just one shy of tying the program record of 24 scored against Williams in 1980.

The win improves UMass to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the Atlantic 10. It extended the Minutewomen's win record against A-10 schools to 41 straight, an NCAA record, while also standing as the 20th straight home win which is the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history.

Senior Day Sweep for University of Massachusetts Tennis, 7-0, Over Rhode Island

AMHERST, Mass. - It was a Senior Day sweep for the UMass tennis team as the Minutewomen defeated Rhode Island 7-0 at the Mullins Center Courts on Thursday afternoon. Prior to the match, UMass honored its senior class of Carol Benito and Arielle Griffin.

The win improves UMass to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 matches. It also marked the eighth consecutive win for the Minutewomen who close out the regular season on Sunday at Fordham (3 p.m.).

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - University of Massachusetts baseball out-hit Boston College, 7-6, but it was BC who came out on top, 2-1, in a Beanpot first round matchup at Shea Field on Wednesday afternoon. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 7-14 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 18-11 and advance to next week’s Beanpot Championship game vs. Northeastern.

Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. After opening the inning with back-to-back singles and a walk, Michael Strem plated Mitch Bigras with a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles on the board.

UMass pushed across the tying run in the top of the seventh. Freshman Ryan Lever poked a one-out single through the right side of the infield and moved to third on a base hit to right by junior Jon Avallone. Lever then came home a bunt single by senior Vinny Scifo.

The Eagles regained the lead, 2-1, with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Strem knocked a single through the left side, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single to right by Joe Cronin.

Junior Mike Geannelis took the loss (0-2) on the mound for the Minutemen, allowing one run on two hits over two innings of relief with no walks and two strikeouts. John Witkowski collected the win (1-0) and Jesse Adams earned a save for BC, both tossing hitless innings out of the bullpen with one strikeout apiece.

The setback leaves the Minutemen at 6-13 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies improve to 14-11 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.

UMass opened the scoring in the top of the first. Senior John Jennings led off with a single and, after moving to third on a double by junior Mike Geannelis, came home on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Carey.

The Bonnies responded, however, by pulling in front, 2-1, in the bottom half of the inning. Danny Urban’s RBI single through the right side knotted things up at 1-1, while Tommy LaCongo scored on an error on the play for the go-ahead run.

In the top of the fifth, the Minutemen leveled the score at 2-2. Senior Vinny Scifo led off with a single to center and later crossed the plate on a bases loaded walk to Geannelis.

No. 7 Towson Outlasts UMass Men’s Lacrosse, 11-8

AMHERST, Mass. - Brendan Hegarty and Tyler Bogart combined for five goals as Bogart had his second straight multi-goal game, but a late run in the fourth quarter pushed No. 7 Towson past the Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team 11-8 Saturday at Garber Field.

The result moves Towson to 10-1 (2-0 CAA) on the season, while the Minutemen are now 4-6 (0-2 CAA).

UMass won the race to the scoreboard early when Hegarty took a feed from Bogart and fired a shot home just 1:37 into the contest. Just over four minutes later, the Minutemen took a 2-0 lead when Dan Muller set up Bogart for his eighth goal of the season.

No. 19 Women's Lax Sets NCAA Record with Win at Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. - For the 39th consecutive time, the No. 19 UMass women's lacrosse team came out victorious against an Atlantic 10 foe with Friday's 13-9 win at George Mason giving the Minutewomen a new NCAA record. The 39th straight conference win for UMass (10-1, 3-0 A-10) broke its tie with Northwestern for the longest such streak in the history of the NCAA.

The Wildcats had originally set the record with 38 straight American Lacrosse Conference wins from 2005-2011. The Minutewomen have won every Atlantic 10 regular-season game since March 2011.
Friday's game was not without its early drama as the Patriots (7-3, 2-1 A-10) held UMass at bay for the first 20 minutes of play taking a 4-3 lead at the 9:42 mark of the first half.

UMass Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Bonnies

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - University of Massachusetts baseball resumed Atlantic 10 play on Friday afternoon and split its doubleheader at St. Bonaventure, taking game one, 3-2, before dropping the nightcap, 5-3. Following the day’s action, the Minutemen are now 6-12 overall, 2-3 in the A-10, while the Bonnies move to 13-11-1 on the season (1-4 A-10).

UMass broke up a scoreless deadlock in the top of the third with a solo home run by sophomore Brett Evangelista, his first of his career, to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bonnies rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth as David Vaccaro legged out a leadoff infield single and crossed the plate on a double play ball later in the frame.

In the Minutemen’s next turn at bat, Evangelista answered for the Minutemen, plating junior Mike Geannelis with a RBI double to left center after Geannelis reached with a one-out walk.

Junior Ryan Moloney was stellar in his start, allowing just two runs and striking out five through seven, but did not receive the decision. Sophomore Kevin Hassett pitched a hitless eighth to collect the win (1-0), while senior Evan Mackintosh worked the ninth and earned his fourth save of the season. Nate Grant tossed 1.1 innings out of the bullpen for St. Bonaventure and took the loss (1-2).

In game two, UMass used four hits to build a 3-0 lead in the third, including back-to-back RBI doubles from junior Mike Hart and senior John Jennings. Geannelis plated Hart with a single to right to cap off the scoring.


St. Bonaventure responded, though, by scoring five unanswered runs. Thad Johnson cut the Bonnies’ deficit to 3-1 with a homer in the fourth and the squad pushed across a second run without a hit in the sixth.

The Bonnies then tied the score courtesy of an RBI single from Tommy LaCongo in the seventh. He went on to cross the plate on a fielder’s choice ground ball for the go-ahead run later in the inning. Ted Dilts added a fifth run for St. Bonaventure with a solo home run in the eighth.

Senior Kevin Lacy took the loss (0-1) for UMass out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on two hits. Starter Tim Cassidy struck out nine over six innings for a career high. Brandon Schilmm went eight innings, scattering three runs on nine hits to pick up the win (3-3) for the Bonnies, while T Johnson logged his third of the season.

The Minutemen will close out the series at St. Bonaventure on Sun., Apr. 10, with game three set for a noon start.

UMass Divers Conclude NCAA Zone A Regional Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the second day in a row, Emma Roush reached the finals of the NCAA Zone A Regional Meet placing 13th on Tuesday afternoon in the three-meter event. Katie Polk placed 21st on the three-meter board, while men's diver Trent Kindvall finished 38th in the one-meter event.

Roush also placed 13th on the one-meter board in Monday's opening day of competition. For the three-meter event, she scored a combined 539.25 points for both the preliminary and final round. She started the day with 272.65 points which placed her ninth in the preliminary/quarterfinal round and earned her a spot in the finals.

Polk scored 238.45 points to place 21st overall and just 12 points outside of the finals round.
Kindvall scored 232.45 points in the opening round for the men's one-meter competition.
