No. 6 Amherst Falls at No. 3 Tufts, 16-11

MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 6 Amherst College men's lacrosse team received a pair of goals from Quinn Moroney '16 and Evan Wolf '16, but No. 3 Tufts University used an eight goal first quarter to help the Jumbos pull away to a 16-11 victory in Saturday's NESCAC tilt at Bello Field in Medford, Mass.

With the loss, Amherst sees its three-game winning streak snapped as it moves to 10-3 on the season, 6-3 in NESCAC action. Tufts improves to 11-1 overall, 7-0 in league action.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
  • Tufts struck twice in a span 44 seconds as Kyle Howard-Johnson scored twice to give the Jumbos a 2-0 lead at the 11:49 mark.
  • Wolf netted the first of his goals at the 10:35 mark to cut the lead in half following a dish from Sam Lawlor '16, but Tufts answered with six straight scores in just under six minutes to make it 8-1 with 2:23 to play in the period.
  • Howard-Johnson scored twice more during the run, while John Uppgren also added two scores. Andreycak and Jake Gillespie added a goal each to help the Jumbos mount a seven goal lead, while Andreycak also contributed two assists.
  • Another goal by Andreycak – this one on the man-advantage at the 11:07 mark of the second quarter – lifted the host's lead to 9-1, before the Purple & White responded with a string of three straight scores to make it 9-4 with 7:30 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Wolf scored his second goal of the game at the 8:41 mark, followed shortly thereafter by Lawlor who delivered a goal on a feed from Kane Haffey '16. Connor Crump '16 then netted Amherst's third straight goal at the 7:30 mark to narrow the gap to five goals.
  • Uppgren (assisted by Andreycak), and Zach Richman (assisted by Uppgren) notched back-to-back markers for Tufts to extend the lead back to seven (11-4) with 4:12 on the clock, before Haffey and Richman exchanged goals to make it 12-5 with 2:57 remaining in the half. Connor Sheehan '18 and Andreycak provided the assists on the respective goals.
  • Moroney closed out the second quarter with his first tally of the contest with just 26 seconds on the clock to set the score at 12-6 in favor of the Jumbos after 30 minutes of play.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
  • Two quick scores by Gillespie and Uppgren extended Tufts' advantage to 14-6, but Amherst answered once more with three goals of its own in a span of 1:27 to pull the Purple & White to within five (14-9) with 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • Moroney notched his second of the game, while Dylan Park '16 and Andrew Ford '19 added a goal each during the run.
  • Neither side was able to score for the duration of the frame as the Jumbos held its five-goal lead heading into the fourth session.
  • At the 12:31 mark Uppgren found the back of the net for a fifth time, while Garrett Clarke scored his first of the day on a feed from Gillespie at the 8:04 mark to make it 16-9.
  • Matt Killian '17 scored at the 5:48 mark (aided by Park), while Michael Litner '16 capitalized on a dish from Moroney with 2:25 remaining in the contest to make it 16-11, but that's as close as Amherst could get as Tufts held on for a five-goal victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Amherst goalie Cody Tranbarger '17 made seven stops in 15 minutes of play, while Thomas Gilligan '16 made eight saves in 45 minutes for the Purple & White.
  • Ian Kadish '18 notched a team-high six ground balls, while Ryan Cassidy '16 added five pickups and caused two turnovers. Rob Butko '16, Moroney and Wolf followed with three ground balls each in the losing effort.
  • Alex Salazar earned the win for the Jumbos with 15 saves, while Tyler Olney led all players with 11 ground balls. Uppgren followed with four pickups, while Howard-Johnson and Olney caused two turnovers each to help seal the win.
UP NEXT
  • Amherst returns to NESCAC play Saturday, April 23 when it hosts NESCAC and Little III foe Williams College at 1 p.m. at Pratt Field.
  • Tufts returns to the field Tuesday, April 19 at Bates College for a 7 p.m. showdown in Lewiston, Maine.
