BRISTOL, R.I.— A consistent offensive effort powered Roger Williams to a
doubleheader sweep of Gordon on Friday afternoon. The Hawks broke a 1-1
tie before going on to a 4-1 win in game one and held Gordon to just
three hits in a 9-1 game two victory.
Roger Williams improves to
3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and 9-11 overall. Gordon
remains without a win in the CCC at 0-6 and sits at 3-14-1 in total.
Game One: Gordon 1 – 4 Roger Williams
The
Hawks got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first
frame. Roger Williams continuously put pressure on the Gordon defense
with a focused run game, often looking to be aggressive. Meredith Moise
(N. Reading, Mass.) earned a one-out walk and immediately stole second
to threaten for the first run of the game. After pitcher Emily Kline
(Park Ridge, N.J.) got a pop out for the second out, RWU rookie Micaela
Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) singled Moise in from second for the 1-0
advantage.
A quiet two innings ensued until Gordon tied the game
in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out
rally. Kline singled to
the deep spot at third base with two outs and classmate Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) brought her home to knot the score with a double to right.
The
Hawks took the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth and relied
on executing sound base running to tack one on the board. A single,
steal and a pair of grounders was all Roger Williams needed to reclaim
the lead.
Roger Williams added two more in the fifth on a pair
of Gordon miscues, as the Hawks only registered one hit in the inning.
Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) was credited with an RBI in the stanza.
The
Hawks tightened up on defense in the sixth and seventh innings,
shutting Gordon out of base runners to close out the game 4-1.
Game Two: Gordon 1 – 9 Roger Williams - 5 innings
After
Gordon held the Hawks to only six hits in game one, Roger Williams
exploded for 14 knocks in nightcap. The home team scored seven times
between the first and third innings, including a pair of RBI singles by
Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.). Pohl also had a 2-RBI single in the
second.
Gordon got one run back in the top of the fourth when Marissa Meenan
(Wayne, Pa.) launched a one-out pitch over the fence in left center.
Ryder hit second double of the day only a few pitches later, but the
Scots stranded her at third.
Roger Williams scored twice more in the fourth and held Gordon scoreless in the fifth to effectively end the game.
On Deck:
Gordon
is right back on the field tomorrow when they travel to Milton to take
on Curry in another CCC twinbill. Roger Williams heads to Nichols
tomorrow for a noon start.
