BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Axel Brown
(Little Compton, R.I.) scored three times and Babson College used a
late six-goal run to rally past visiting MIT, 13-10, in New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on
Saturday at MacDowell Field.
With its second consecutive win, Babson is now 3-7 overall and 1-1 in
conference play, while MIT slips to 8-3 overall and is also 1-1 in the
NEWMAC.
Senior Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) and first-years Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) and Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) all scored twice for the Beavers. Junior Connor Flaherty (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists to go along with eight ground balls, while sophomore Jack O'Donoghue (Scituate, Mass.) led all players with eight ground balls and also caused two turnovers.
Sophomore Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) scored three goals, while
junior Harris Stolzenberg
(Weston, Fla.) and sophomore Mitch Turley
(Westfield, Ind.) each added two goals apiece to lead the Engineers.
The Green and White jumped on top thanks to early goals from sophomore Taylor Segreti
(North Potomac, Md.) and Brown, and then matched its biggest lead of
the half on Duffy's tally with 3:37 left in the opening quarter. MIT
responded to tie the game on Davis' marker at the 12:38 mark of the
second quarter and followed with back-to-back goals by Turley and junior
Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) to go in front 5-4 just under five
minutes before the break. Flaherty pulled the Beavers even with ninth
goal of the year just 1:19 later to make it 5-5 at the half.
Doten gave Babson a 7-6 lead midway through the third quarter, but
MIT ripped off three straight goals, including consecutive tallies by
Stolzenberg, to grab a 9-7 lead with 1:54 left in the stanza. Duffy
scored following a turnover to get the Beavers within one entering the
fourth, and senior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) tied the game off a feed from first-year Brett Bottomley (Mercer Island, Wash.) just 54 seconds into the fourth.
Doten put the Green and White in front with a highlight-reel goal
with 11:33 to play, and Dillon struck for back-to-back markers just 62
seconds apart to extend the advantage to 12-9 with 6:40 left. Brown
added an insurance tally with just under three minutes remaining before
Davis completed his hat track for the Engineers with 49 seconds to go.
Sophomore Jordan Shapiro
(Pleasantville, N.Y.) finished with eight saves for Babson, while
senior Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) stopped 14 shots for MIT.
The Beavers finished with an edge in both shots (49-30) and ground balls (41-35), and were a perfect 19-of-19 on clear chances.
The Engineers, who won 14-of-27 face-offs, committed 16 of their 24 turnovers in the second half.
Both teams return to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson visits Mass. Maritime, while MIT hosts Clark.
