WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team
held on to defeat Clark College 3-2 on Thursday afternoon in New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Granger
Diamond.
Wheaton improves to 18-6 on the season and 8-2 in NEWMAC play, while Clark falls to 12-18 overall (2-8 NEWMAC).
Junior Michael Bruemmel
collected his second win of the season after pitching 7.1 innings,
giving
up just one run on two hits and striking out six. Senior Eric Dumas earned his league leading 10th save. The save ranks Dumas fourth in all of NCAA Division III in saves.
Wheaton captured the lead early with a single run in the first inning. The run came on an RBI single to right field by Justin Silvestro who knocked in the Lyons leadoff batter Jimmy Smith. Smith started the game with a single to right.
Bruemmel quickly retired the side in the bottom half of the first,
allowing the Wheaton offense to get back to work. The Lyons made it a
2-0 game in the second with another Smith single. This time Zachary Goodwin-Boyd came in to score.
The Cougars earned the run back in their half of the inning with an RBI single to center by Adam Chochrek.
Justin Sellar made it a 3-1 contest in the sixth inning with a single to center, scoring Joey Santigate from second base.
Clark earned a run back with two out in the bottom of the ninth, but
Dumas took control and struck out the Cougars final batter to end the
contest.
