Smith College Price Stops A Career-High 22 In Loss To Westfield State

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Smith College sophomore goalkeeper set a new career-high with 22 saves but it was not enough as the Westfield State lacrosse team came away with a 11-7 non-conference win Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Owls improve to 7-3, while the Pioneers dip to 4-6.

Both teams wasted no time scoring as Westfield's tally by Marissa Nimeskern was quickly answered by Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) in the first two minutes of play. After both teams exchanged goals two more times for a 3-3 score with 15:25 on the clock, the Owls went on a spurt of three-straight goals to close out the first half.

Just under nine minutes went by in the second stanza before Blair Smith gave the visitors a 7-3 lead
but the Pioneers offense unleashed for three-straight goals. Senior Ray Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) found the back of the net and then Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) went back-to-back to make it a one goal game (7-6) with 17:47 on the clock.

Westfield State would go on to score four out of the next five goals to put the game out of reach.

The Owls held a 41-21 advantage in shots and a slight 28-27 edge in ground balls.

In goal, Westfield senior Mimi Khampaeng earned the victory in 30 minutes of play, only having to make one save. On the other end, Smith netminder Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) totaled 22 stops, keeping her team in the game all afternoon.

Smith returrns to conference play when the Pioneers travel to Wellesley on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Owls are back in action Saturday when they host Fitchburg State at noon.
