SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Powered by a four-goal effort from midfielder
Ann Mahoney, the Springfield College lacrosse team posted a 12-2 victory
over visiting Mount Holyoke College on Saturday. With the victory, the
Pride improves to 9-2 and remain perfect in conference play at 4-0. The
Lyons slip to 1-8 on the season and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.
The homestanding Pride opened up a 2-0 advantage in the first half as
goals from Kristina Krull and Kristen Steidler came within the opening
eight minutes of action. Mount Holyoke bounced back as junior attack Charlotte Wagner
recorded her sixth goal in the last two games at 7:57, but a three-goal
run by Mahoney over the final 6:48 sent Springfield into halftime with a
5-1 advantage.
In the second stanza, the Pride converted a pair of opening free
position tallies from Julia Bireley and
Mahoney to make it a 7-1 game.
The Lyons countered, getting a goal back as senior captain and attack Catherine Ryan fed a pass to classmate and fellow captain Julia Bell, who buried it at the 23:58 mark.
Despite the momentum, the Lyons were unable to find the back of the
net again as Springfield went on a 5-0 run, including a pair of goals
from Heather Raniolo, to close out the scoring.
Springfield, which was led by goals from seven different scorers,
posted a 27-15 advantage in shots, along with a 28-17 edge in ground
balls. The Lyons owned a 7-6 clip in draw controls for the contest.
Bell led the Lyons with three ground balls, four draw controls and a game-best five caused turnovers. Defenders Julia Lankin and Alyssa Tabrisky each had two caused turnovers, while Lankin also added a draw control and three ground balls. In goal, junior Isa Rodriguez posted 10 saves.
