HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Roxanne Vento (Arlington, Mass.) and junior Giovanna Bonilla (Queens, N.Y.) keyed the Beacons offense all day long.
Vento finished the day 5-7, with two runs scored and four RBI. With her RBI single in game one, Vento became the first player in program history to reach 100 career RBI.
Bonilla, who leads the Beacons in hits, runs scored and batting average after 10 games, went 3-5 with four runs scored and three walks.
GAME ONE RECAP
Marietta College scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and held on for a 4-2 win over UMass Boston.
Gigi Braga (Medford, Mass.), Alyssa Tulley (Lowell, Mass.), Vento and Bonilla each chipped in two
hits in the loss. Braga and Bonilla each recorded a run scored, while Vento and Tori Dicenso (Lynn, Mass.) registered an RBI apiece.
In the circle, Hayley Catania (Amesbury, Mass.) allowed four runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings to take the loss. Jayla Blackmon (Cambridge, Mass.) came on to retire the final two Pioneer batters.
Marietta starter Jackie Mulvain earned the win after allowing two runs in 4.1 innings.
UMass Boston took their first and only lead of the game three batters in. Braga and Bonilla opened the game with back-to-back singles, before Vento roped an RBI double to score Braga.
The Pioneers answered back with all four of their runs in the bottom of the third. With no outs and runners on the corner, Maicy Kirk and Jordan Pallay recorded back-to-back RBI singles to give Marietta the lead. After a double steal brought home the third run, the hosts added a sacrifice fly to close out the inning.
UMass Boston tried to tie the game in the top of the fifth. The Beacons loaded the bases up on three-straight singles from Bonilla, Vento and Kelly Danahy (Kingston, Mass.). Dicenso followed with an RBI single, but reliever Maddi Liston recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.
GAME TWO RECAP
After blowing an early 6-0 lead, UMass Boston regained the lead in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth to knock off Washington College.
The top five hitters in the Beacons' lineup provided the majority of the damage in the final Florida contest. UMass Boston's top five hitters combined for six of the team's nine hits (6-13), 7 runs scored and six RBI.
Vento finished 3-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and the team's lone extra-base hit (a triple). Bonilla added a line of 1-1 with three runs scored and three walks.
Braga tacked on two runs scored and an RBI, while Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, R.I.), Danahy and Tulley each recorded an RBI apiece.
Junior Jess Greenspan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) earned her third win of the season in the contest. She allowed nine hits and two earned runs, while striking out five.
Shoremen relief pitcher Rachel Butler led Washington College with three RBI and a run scored. She also took the loss, after giving up four runs (three earned) over 4.2 innings.
The Beacons jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring three runs in each of the first two innings.
After back-to-back walks to Braga and Bonilla, Vento opened the scoring with an RBI single. Danahy walked to load the bases and Tulley plated Bonilla with a sacrifice fly. Cassidy Gaeta (North Reading, Mass.) walked to load the bases again and Vento scampered home on a passed ball.
In the second inning, Vento crushed a triple down the right-field line to score Braga and Bonilla. Danahy followed with an RBI groundout to push the lead to 6-0.
Washington College roared back with five two-out runs in the top of the third. After the Shoremen loaded the bases with two down, UMass Boston committed an error to let the first run score. Butler and Alli Saul followed with two-run hits to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Shoremen added a sixth run scored in the top of the fourth on a wild pitch.
UMass Boston immediately retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Bonilla and Vento singled with two down and Bonilla came in to score on a two-out error.
The Beacons stretched their lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners in scoring position and one out, Pawlina came on as a pinch-hitter and delivered an RBI single. Braga followed with an RBI groundout to plate Kiera Prusmack (Houston, Texas).
Washington College put two runners on with one out in the seventh, but Greenspan induced a sacrifice fly and a line out to wrap up the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Vento became the first player in program history to record 100 career RBI in game one. She also passed Gia Raczkowski ('17) for second in program history in career total bases i (239).
- The Beacons allowed two or fewer earned runs in both games on Thursday and six of their 10 games in Florida. UMass Boston's three-woman staff recorded a collective 3.07 team earned run average.
- Greenspan joined Michelle Zullo ('15) as the only two players in program history to throw 400 or more career innings in the win over Washington College. For her career, Greenspan has now thrown 403.2 innings.
- Bonilla recorded more hits during this Florida trip than her previous two seasons combined. The junior finished the trip 16-30 for an incredible .533 batting average.
- Thursday's contest marked the first-ever meeting between UMass Boston and both Marietta College and Washington College.
UMass Boston will return to New England this weekend. They will look to open New England play on Tuesday night, when they travel to take on Emmanuel College at 6 and 8 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 6-0 against Swarthmore, UMass Boston scored 10-straight runs behind a record day from senior catcher Roxanne Vento (Arlington, Mass.). Vento tied the program-record for career home runs with her grand slam in the third inning and also set the program record for walks as part of a 2-for-2 game with two runs, four RBI and two walks.
In the nightcap, freshman Hayley Catania (Amesbury, Mass.) turned in another fantastic performance but was the tough-luck loser.
GAME ONE RECAP
UMass Boston struck for six runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the sixth inning, to earn their second-straight comeback win.
Vento keyed the Beacons in the win with her first home run of the season and 13th of her collegiate career.
Junior Giovanna Bonilla (Queens, N.Y.) led the Beacons with three hits in four at-bats and tacked on two runs scored. Sophomore Kelly Danahy (Kingston, Mass.) chipped in two hits, two runs and an RBI.
In the circle, Jess Greenspan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) settled down after a rough start to hold the Garnets scoreless over the final five innings. She finished with a final line of six hits, six runs (four earned) and four strikeouts over seven innings.
Swarthmore starter Lucy Decker allowed nine runs (six earned) over 5.1 innings to take the loss.
The Garnets took a 1-0 lead after three batters and stretched their advantage to 3-0 in the top of the first. The visitors stretched their advantage to 6-0 in the top of the second on a two-run double from Mika Maenaga.
After being limited to one hit in the first two innings, UMass Boston rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Sarah Harlinski (Stubridge, Mass.) reached on an error, Gigi Braga (Medford, Mass.) walked and Bonilla singled to load the bases. Vento stepped up and blasted a home run over the right-center field fence to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Danahy and Tori Dicenso (Lynn, Mass.) both singled to put two runners on with two outs and both runners scampered home on an Garnets errors to tie the game.
After Greenspan left runners on the corners in the top of the sixth, UMass Boston took their first lead of the game with a four-run bottom of the sixth.
Bonilla singled and stole second and Vento walked to put two one with one out. Alyssa Tulley (Lowell, Mass.) followed with a go-ahead, ground-run double and then Danahy added an RBI single to score Vento.
With two outs, Tulley rushed home on a wild pitch and Britney Perkett (Pittsfield, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to score Danahy.
Greenspan set the Garnets down in order in the seventh to earn her 35th career win in 55 career starts.
GAME TWO RECAP
For the second-straight day, Catania found herself in a pitcher's duel, as she and a pair of Nor'Easter pitchers matched each other with zeroes the first six innings.
Catania recorded a career-high nine strikeouts and allowed just seven hits, one walk and one run in the complete-game loss.
UNE's Jordan Strum earned the win after allowing just one hit in three scoreless innings.
Avery Alberghini was the offensive hero for the hosts, as the catcher went 4-4 with the game-winning RBI single.
Juniors Kiera Prusmack (Houston, Texas), Braga and Bonilla each recorded one of the Beacons' three hits.
UMass Boston had two of their three best chances to score in the opening two frames. The Beacons loaded the bases in the first and second innings with two outs, but Melissa Sprague induced a strikeout and a lineout to get out of the jams.
The Nor'Easters put two runners in scoring position with one out in the third and fifth innings, but Catania struck out the final two batters both times.
UMass Boston created their third and final good chance to score in the top of the seventh. Prusmack led off with a single and moved to third on a groundout. With two outs and Prusmack on third, Strum struck out a Beacon to keep the game scoreless.
Pinch-hitter Sarah Lachapelle opened the bottom of the seventh with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Zelie Condon-Layman. After a pair of outs put Condon-Layman at second base, Alberghini singled through the left side to score the runner from second and end the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Vento tied Gia Raczkowski ('17) for the program record for career home runs (13) in game one. She also set the program mark for career walks (59) in the contest. Finally, Vento became the eighth player in program history to record 400 or more career at-bats in game two (401).
- The Beacons won game one despite recording a season-high five errors. UMass Boston made up for their miscues by going a season-best 5-5 on the basepaths.
- Greenspan moved into second-place in program history in career innings pitched (396.2) against Swarthmore.
- Bonilla has already set a new career-high for hits in a single-season. The junior outfielder has a team-high 13 hits in 25 at-bats and is hitting .520 for the trip. She also recorded her first career extra-base hit, a double, in the win over Swarthmore.
- The Beacons improved to 1-0 all-time against Swarthmore and 0-3 against the Nor'Easters (two losses in 1981).
- Catania had recorded just six strikeouts in 23 innings in her first three appearances. The freshman was one strikeout shy of becoming the sixth pitcher in program history to record double-digit punch outs.
