CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Western Michigan on Sunday morning in the final game of the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase, but fell short in extra innings 6-5.
Kaitlyn Stavinoha led the UMass offensive attack with three hits in four trips to the plate to bring her average on the season to a team-leading .410 to go along with a .721 slugging-percentage. Stavinoha started things off by following an Erin Stacevicz single with one of her own to put two runners before a Hannah Bunker single loaded the bases, leading to a pair of RBIs from Madison Gimpl and Melissa Garcia on two free passes to first.
UMass extended its lead to four runs in its next trip to the plate as Stavinoha's second hit was a RBI triple that scored Jackie Kelley. Bunker followed with her second of two hits, picking up her fifth RBI of the season with a single through the left side.
Western Michigan scored a single run in both the third and fifth innings to pull within two before coming within a run on a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning. A solo home run to center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning tied it up at 4-4 and sent it to extras.
The Minutewomen brought home the international tiebreak run in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead 5-4 as Kelley drove in a pinch-running Kristina Day from third on a fielder's choice before two consecutive outs left a pair of runners stranded. Kelley finished the day 2-4 at the plate while Stacevicz added a pair of hits for a UMass team that finished with nine to go along with four multi-hit performers.
The Broncos scored the game-winning runs on a single to right field, bringing in the sixth and final run to win on an obstruction call at the plate.
UMass will travel to DeLand, Fla. for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, March 13 at Stetson beginning at 4 p.m.
