BC to host Syracuse in three-game series this weekend.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College softball team suffered a tough 1-0
loss to non-conference foe Providence at the Harrington Athletics
Village on Wednesday afternoon.
Boston College dropped to 8-15 on the season, while Providence improved to 14-10.
Freshman pitcher Susannah Anderson went the distance, scattered eight hits, struck out three and gave up one run.
It was the defense that hurt the Eagles as they committed four errors,
two in the sixth inning, when Providence scored the lone run of the
game. BC's offense went silent as freshman Emme Martinez managed the only hit in the second inning.
Providence had two on in the first inning on one hit and an error.
Anderson fought back and got Crista San Antonio to pop out to end the
inning unscathed.
In the third, the Friars opened the inning with a single and another
error put two runners on base. Anderson worked her way out of the inning
by getting a strikeout, and ground out and a foul pop to the catcher Gianna Boccagno to end the inning without any damage.
It was in the sixth inning where the errors caught up with the Eagles.
San Antonio reached first on an error, followed by a single to right
center. Anderson got Jackie Martin to fly out to right field. A single
by Hadley Tate put two on and one out. The next batter hit a ground ball
to Martinez at third. The Eagles infielder cut down the runner going
home, but Providence scored on a bad throw to first. Anderson maneuvered
out of the inning as Skie Villani grounded out to Martinez at third.
The Eagles had two innings to tie the game but the Friars rookie pitcher
Daniela Alvarez continued to baffle the BC hitters. She struck out two
in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to earn her eighth win
of the season. Alvarez gave up one hit, struck out 11 in seven innings.
