The Mammoths improved to 2-1 on the year after defeating the Pioneers (0-4) 13-3 in the first game and 3-2 in the nightcap, with both games scheduled for seven innings.
Game 1: Amherst 13, Utica 3
Amherst took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then fell behind 3-2 in the bottom of the frame, only to plate eight runs over the next three times at bat to start the rout.
Joe Palmo '21 had three this and drove in four runs, including a two-run triple in the second inning that put the Mammoths ahead 4-3 for good. Palmo drove in a run with a double in the third and another with a single in the sixth, finishing the game a homer shy of the cycle.
It was a homerun for the Pioneers that scored all three of their runs, as Tim Quinlan left the left field yard, part of four straight hits to start the game for Utica.
Davis Brown '19 settled down after that, only giving up three more hits and no runs over five innings. Brown (1-0) struck out six and walked just one batter before being relieved by Kyler Kopacz '21, who struck out four and issued just one hit in two shutout innings.
In all, Amherst ripped six extra-base hits. Palmo and Chase Henley '19 both doubled and tripled, with Henley collecting three RBI. Rob Casey III '20 was 2-2 with two runs scored, a double and two walks, and first year Daniel Qin went 2-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored in the sixth.
Mark Spina fell to 0-1 after giving up five earned runs on just two hits and four walks. Utica walked eleven batters and struck out just one Mammoth at the plate, taking until the final inning to record the strikeout.
Game 2: Amherst 3, Utica 2
Amherst scored all three runs in the bottom of the second and held off the Pioneers despite being outhit 6-4.
Andrew Nagel '21 did not allow an earned run over five innings of work, striking out eight batters. Zach Horwitz '20 struck out the side in an inning of relief and Mike Dow '19 worked a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout for his first save of the year.
Will Murphy '20 led off the second inning with a triple to left field, but Amherst did all of the rest of their damage without the benefit of a hit. Casey lifted a sacrifice fly to right field and reached base on an error, getting to second base. Kevin Schroeder '21 drew a walk and two batters later, Schroeder and Casey both scored on subsequent wild pitches.
The Mammoths would draw three more walks and get a single by Palmo, but Utica escaped any more trouble with a caught stealing and a strikeout by Jake Cavanaugh (0-1) to end the inning.
Utica came back with two runs in the top of the third, with Thomas Giglio starting the inning with a single and scoring on a sacrifice bunt that turned into an error. Christian Tiffin followed with an RBI single to right fielder but Nagel got Jacob Gaboriault to line into a double-play to end the inning.
Cavanaugh would issue eight free passes on the day and gave up four hits and three unearned runs in three innings. Brendan Sarnowski did not allow a hit in three relief innings.
