Wellesley Lacrosse Downs Smith For First NEWMAC Win, 15-7

Recap, photo courtesy of Wellesley College
NORTHAMPTON, Mass -- Wellesley College lacrosse picked up the team's first New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season on Saturday at Smith College. The Blue defeated the Pioneers by a final score of 15-7.

The Blue are back to .500 on the year, improving to 4-4, while Smith drops to 7-2. Both teams now stand at 1-1 in NEWMAC contests.

First year Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) capitalized on a free position shot 47 seconds into the first half and the Blue never trailed en route to the victory. The goal was one of six on the day for Mallett as she teamed up with seniors Dacia Persky (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Olivia Strobl (Stafford, Va.) to score 14 of the 15 goals for Wellesley. Junior Hannah Masiano (Gambrills, Md.) picked up the other Blue goal on a free position shot. Senior Lena Engbreston (Beaverton, Ore.) set up three Blue goals and is now only 13 points away from 100 in her career. Persky is now just 11 points shy of 200 in her Wellesley career after finishing the day with six points.

Wellesley's defense stymied the Pioneers for the majority of the game, but senior Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass.) was able to lead her team with four goals on nine shots. Sophomore Kaitlin Chiu (Palo Alto, Calif.) and senior Clelie Fielding (Francestown, N.H.) also tallied a goal and an assist for Smith.

Strobl picked up two of her three goals in the first two minutes to push Wellesley ahead 3-0, before Persky took over and scored four of her five goals to give the Blue an 8-3 lead heading into halftime. The Blue continued to keep the pressure on Smith as the Pioneers never came within four goals from the lead in the second half. Briggs scored three of her four goals in the second frame, but Mallett continued to answer for the Blue, tallying five of her six goals to solidify the win.

Wellesley first year Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) made a career high 15 saves to earn her third win of her career, moving her to 3-2 on the season. First year Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich.) picked up her second loss (5-2) in net making ten saves on 25 shots. Wellesley finished the contest with a 31-28 lead in shots.

The Blue had the edge in draw controls (13-11), but the Pioneers topped the Blue by a 27-25 margin in ground balls. The Blue were 3-for-9 on free position attempts, while Smith finished 2-of-8.

Up next for both teams will be a non-conference matchup against Framingham State University, with the Blue traveling to the Rams on April 1 at 7:00 PM, while Smith will host FSU on April 3 at 6:00 PM.

Gunarathne Sets New FSU Career Strikeout Record as Softball Sweeps MCLA

Recap, photo courtesy of Framingham State University
Framingham, Mass.  – Senior pitcher Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, RI) became the Framingham State University softball career strikeout leader as she earned the victory both games of the doubleheader as the Rams swept the MCLA Trailblazers by scores of 11-0 (5 innings) and 5-0 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Maple Street Field.

THE BASICS:
- Scores:         Game 1: Framingham State 11, MCLA 0 (5 innings)
                        Game 2: Framingham State 5, MCLA 0
- Records: Framingham State (7-9, 2-0 MASCAC), MCLA (3-15, 0-2 MASCAC)
Location: Maple Street Field – Framingham, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1 -
  • Gunarathne entered the game with 350 career strikeouts needing just two to surpass the old mark of 351 established by former Ram Yaya Faria who wore the black and gold from 2011-13.  Gunarathne struck out the first batter in the second inning tying Faria's mark and broke the record a batter later with her second strikeout of the game and inning.  Gunarathne finished the game going three innings and allowing no hits with four strikeouts.
  • The Rams plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning taking control of the game.  Sophomore Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) walked and scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the frame.
  • Senior Lauren Salisbury (Cranston, RI) plated a run with a single to left and junior Kaylea Sherman (North Attleboro, Mass.) followed with an RBI single up the middle.  Salisbury scored from third on the back end of a double steal to account for the final run of the frame.
  • The Rams added two more in the bottom of the second on a two run double by sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) pushing the lead to 6-0.
  • Five runs in the bottom of the third extended the lead to 11-0.  Sophomore Victoria Ziner (Easton, Mass.), Desrochers, Sherman and freshman Farrah Adam (West Springfield, Mass) added RBI base hits in the frame.
  • Desrochers finished the game two-for-two for the Rams with three runs scored, a walk and an RBI, while Caughey went two-for-two with two runs scored and two RBI. Adam finished the game with three hits, while Sherman also added two.
  • Gunarathne and Marissa Vellucci (Tyngsboro, Mass.) combined for the no-hitter in the game for the Rams with Gunarathne going three innings and earning the victory and Velucci tossing the final two.
  • Kara Adams took the loss for the Trailblazers going two innings and allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits with three walks.
  • The Trailblazers lone baserunner of the game came in the top of the first inning when Kaitlyn Berghela reached on an error to lead off the game.

Game 2 -
  • In game two, neither team scored over the first five and a half innings as Gunarathne cruised along for the Rams and Samantha Feinstein kept the Rams off the board for the Trailblazers.
  • The Rams finally broke the 0-0 deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring five runs.  Adam plated the first with a bloop single to center and Sherman followed with a two-run base hit.  Freshman Laela Pepin (Acushnet, Mass.) plated the fourth run of the frame on an RBI single to center and final came when Ziner drove in Pepin with a single to left.
  • Five runs was all the Rams would need as Gunarathne retired the Trailblazers in order in the seventh recording a pair of strikeouts.
  • Gunarathne earned her second victory of the day going seven innings and allowing no runs, on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
  • Feinstein took the loss or the Trailblazers going six innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Berghela, Kayla Baker and Cassandra Crosier recorded single hits apiece for the Trailblazers in the game and Berghela stole a pair of bases.
  • The Rams received two hits apiece from Pepin and Salisbury in game two, while Sherman drove in a pair on her one hit in the game.

Boston College Bounces Back to Defeat Siena

Eagles take down Saints, 7-5, at home.

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team picked up a 7-5 win over Siena at the Harrington Athletics Village on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles snapped a three-game slide to improve to 11-9 overall, while the Saints dropped to 4-12.

Boston College trailed early, but took its first lead in the second inning. The two sides traded single runs in the fourth and fifth inning and then traded two runs apiece in the seventh.

After Siena tied the game with two in the top of the seventh, junior shortstop Brian Dempsey (Potomac, Md.) led off the bottom half with a base hit up the middle. He scored from third on a groundball to the right side of the bat of freshman second baseman Cody Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) with the eventual game-winning run.

The Eagles totaled 14 hits in the game as six players recorded a multi-hit game. Senior designated hitter Gian Martellini (Johnston, R.I.) led the way at 3-for-4 with two runs driven in. Junior center fielder Dante Baldelli (Cumberland, R.I.) was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.

Senior right-handed pitcher Jack Nelson (Sparta, N.J.) got the win in two innings of relief. Nelson (1-0) surrendered a two-run lead in his second inning of work, but was effective with a perfect sixth and limited the damage in a four-hit inning in the seventh. Redshirt-sophomore RHP Michael Marzonie (Greenwich, Conn.) made his first career start and pitched two-plus innings with one run scored against three hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Freshman RHP Travis Lane (Georgetown, Mass.) worked two-scoreless innings for his first career save.

Providence Tops Eagles, 1-0

Recap, photo courtesy of Boston College

BC to host Syracuse in three-game series this weekend.

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College softball team suffered a tough 1-0 loss to non-conference foe Providence at the Harrington Athletics Village on Wednesday afternoon.

Boston College dropped to 8-15 on the season, while Providence improved to 14-10.

Freshman pitcher Susannah Anderson went the distance, scattered eight hits, struck out three and gave up one run.

It was the defense that hurt the Eagles as they committed four errors, two in the sixth inning, when Providence scored the lone run of the game. BC's offense went silent as freshman Emme Martinez managed the only hit in the second inning.

Providence had two on in the first inning on one hit and an error. Anderson fought back and got Crista San Antonio to pop out to end the inning unscathed.

In the third, the Friars opened the inning with a single and another error put two runners on base. Anderson worked her way out of the inning by getting a strikeout, and ground out and a foul pop to the catcher Gianna Boccagno to end the inning without any damage.

It was in the sixth inning where the errors caught up with the Eagles.

San Antonio reached first on an error, followed by a single to right center. Anderson got Jackie Martin to fly out to right field. A single by Hadley Tate put two on and one out. The next batter hit a ground ball to Martinez at third. The Eagles infielder cut down the runner going home, but Providence scored on a bad throw to first. Anderson maneuvered out of the inning as Skie Villani grounded out to Martinez at third.

The Eagles had two innings to tie the game but the Friars rookie pitcher Daniela Alvarez continued to baffle the BC hitters. She struck out two in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to earn her eighth win of the season. Alvarez gave up one hit, struck out 11 in seven innings.

Harvard Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Boston University in Triple-OT Thriller, 12-11

Nigel Andrews scored the game-winner in a triple-overtime road victory at Boston University (Photo Courtesy: Rob Butler).
BOSTON – Harvard rallied from five down and scored six unanswered goals between third and fourth quarters to earn a 12-11 triple-overtime road victory at Boston University Tuesday night. The win was the Crimson's third in four games and was made possible by Nigel Andrews, who scored with 1:45 left in the third OT.

Playing its second game in four days, Harvard (3-4) found itself trailing, 9-4, with 3:47 left in the third period after BU (6-3) scored its fifth unanswered goal. First-year Nick Loring stopped the run with his fifth goal of the season and the Crimson defense held firm the rest of the way to keep its deficit at four.

Harvard Softball Drops Contests to Boise State and LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif.- On the final day of its west coast campaign, the Harvard softball team (6-9) fell to Boise State (20-4), 6-0, and Loyola Marymount (18-11), 3-2.

Boise State; L, 6-0
In the first of two games on the day, Boise State quickly leaped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Broncos added to their lead with a run in the fourth followed by two more in the sixth. Throughout the contest, Harvard struggled to put runners on base, as the only two hits came from Morgan Melito at the top of the fifth with a single to right and Teagan Shaw's right side single in the seventh, but it was not enough in the end.

Loyola Marymount; L, 3-2
Beginning with a pitcher's duel for the first three innings, the Lions threatened to score in the bottom of the third with bases loaded and two outs on the board, but first-year Grace Krantz forced the batter to fly out to left field. One inning later, LMU broke through the Crimson's tough defense to have three runs cross the plate. Now with Aleissa Heiner, followed by Katie Duncan in the circle, Harvard shut down the Lions for the remainder of the game allowing the squad to answer back.

In a late minute push at the top of the sixth, Teagan Shaw singled down the right field line, allowing Erin Lockhart who reached base by a walk to cross the plate for the first Crimson run. Now trailing by two with two outs and a runner on third, Meagan Lantz duplicated Shaw for another RBI single. The small rally ended there as Harvard could not carry that momentum into the seventh and fell to the Lions, 3-2.

Harvard Highlights
  • Collecting one of two hits in each contest, Teagan Shaw has now collected at least one hit in four consecutive games.
