Syracuse, N.Y. - March 5, 2019 - For the
second-straight year, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team
battled RIT in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University, and were
defeated by a 21-4 margin on Tuesday evening.
The Tigers were ranked No. 3 in the most recent USILA Poll and
improved to 3-0, while Springfield, which was also receiving votes in
the national poll, dropped to 1-2.
Springfield struck for the game's first goal as Cole Pecora (North Haven, Conn.)
broke free from his man and ripped a shot into the top right corner
just under four minutes into the contest. After the Tigers answered
with three goals in a 1:18 span starting at 7:53, Tommy Nash (Massapequa, N.Y.) got his hands free on the run, bouncing a shot into the back of the cage to make it a one-goal game at the 5:03 mark.
However, over the next 41-minutes of action, RIT would score 17
unanswered goals, as they took a 6-2 lead into the second quarter, an
11-2 advantage at the half, and an 18-2 cushion into the fourth
quarter. Zachary Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) broke the Pride's scoreless streak when he blistered a shot into the top shelf off a great look from Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) with 8:44 left in regulation. Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) added a man-up goal off an assist by Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) with under a minute to close out the scoring.
Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.)
made 16 saves for Springfield as RIT owned a 51-27 advantage in shots.
The Tigers won 22-of-29 face-offs and had a 46-29 edge in ground
balls.
Up next, Springfield College will again travel to New York on Saturday, March 9 when it clashes with Union for a 1 pm tilt.
