HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons scored six-straight runs to tie the game in their season-opener but couldn't come through with one final timely hit against St. John Fisher.
Seniors Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) and Charlie Huegi (Sandy Hook, Conn.) each paced the Beacons offense with two hits, an RBI and a stolen base. Herzog tacked on a run scored, while Huegi also collected a walk.
Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) was the final Beacon to record a pair of hits in the loss. Junior transfers Ryan Collins (Peabody, Mass.) and Brandon Cellucci (Wynantskill, N.Y.) each registered an RBI in their Beacons' debut.
On the mound, sophomore Tylor Arruda (New Bedford, Mass.) came on in the fourth inning and threw three scoreless frames, while striking out five.
Bobby Tramondozzi (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss, after allowing two hits and two earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Antony Mantova led the Cardinals by going 4-6 with three RBI and and a run scored. Thomas Pasquale and Allen Murphy, who hit in front of Mantova in the middle of the order, added a combined five hits, three runs scored and four RBI.
St. John Fisher starter RJ Kuruts allowed two earned runs over seven innings, while striking out eight and walking six.
Jared Wren earned the win after allowing one hit and striking out three in two scoreless frames.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
Mantova opened the scoring with a solo home run and then added an RBI single to make it 3-0 with two outs in the third. The Cardinals tacked on one final run on a Beacons error in the third, before scoring two more unearned runs in the fourth.
After leaving runners on in each of the first four frames, UMass Boston cut the deficit to 6-2 in the fifth. Danny Brown (Hudson, N.H.) and Eddie Riley (Quincy, Mass.) each walked to put runners on the corners with one out. Brown scored on a wild pitch and Riley raced all the way to third, before scampering home on a Collins sacrifice fly.
The Beacons tied the game in the eighth, when Dillan Wilkinson came on to replace Kuruts.
Ryan McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) reached on an error and Anthony Cecere (Wakefield, Mass.) put runners on the corners with a one-out walk. Herzog plated McCormick with an RBI double and pinch runner Ryan Leung (Brookline, Mass.) made it 6-4 when he scored on a balk.
Cellucci cut the deficit to one on an RBI double and Huegi tied the game when his RBI single drove in pinch runner Thomas Cue (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
With two outs and two runners in scoring position, relief pitcher Jack Delaney recorded a strikeout and fly out to leave the go-ahead runs on base.
Tramondozzi shut the Cardinals down in the 9th and 10th innings, but the Cardinals relievers managed to strand a runner in scoring position in both innings to extend the game to a second extra-frame.
With two outs and a runner on second in the top of the 11th, Pasquale came through with a go-ahead RBI double and Mantova tacked on an RBI single to give St. John Fisher an 8-6 edge.
The Beacons put two of the first three batters on in the bottom of the 11th against Wren, but he struck out the final two batters to close out the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
- UMass Boston's pitching staff registered 13 strikeouts and stranded 10 Cardinals.
- Five freshmen made their collegiate debut in the contest and two transfers appeared in their first game as a Beacon.
- The Beacons struck out 13 times and left 12 runners on base in their season opener. Beacons hitters also worked 10 base on balls.
- In total, the Beacons used 18 position players and six pitchers.
- With the loss, UMass Boston falls to 1-2 all-time against St. John Fisher. The two team have no met in three of the past four seasons and two-straight years in Florida.
