SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State
University women's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a 15-5
victory over Mount Holyoke College on Friday evening at MHC Turf Field.
The Bears (1-0) are now 14-11 all-time versus the Lyons and have won
each of the last four meetings. Mount Holyoke falls to 1-1 on the young
season.
Junior attack Victoria McDonough
(Marshfield, Mass.) scored a game-high six goals to go along with an
assist to pace Bridgewater State. McDonough also filled the stat sheet
with three ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore midfielder Emily Hiller (Marion, Mass.) added four goals, a pair of helpers and five ground balls for the Bears, while senior midfielder Elizabeth Ettridge
(Marshfield, Mass.) notched three points on two goals and an assist to
go along with a game-high six ground balls. Ettridge now has 150 goals
in her career.
Bridgewater led 7-4 at the break as McDonough tallied three goals and
an assist over the first 30 minutes while Hiller scored twice. Freshman
attack Abby Baldwin (Florence, Mass.) paced Mount Holyoke with three first-half goals. The Bears outshot the Lyons 12-5 in the opening stanza.
The visitors potted the first four goals of the second half,
including three by McDonough, to open up a commanding 11-4 lead. After
the Lyons cut the deficit to 11-5, Bridgewater scored the final four
goals of the period to pull away for the 15-5 victory.
Freshman attackers Jacqueline DeLorey (Westwood, Mass.) and Katherine Tracy (Marion, Mass.) each potted their first collegiate goals for the Bears. DeLorey finished with two goals on the evening.
Bridgewater held a 27-15 shot advantage for the game as well as a 14-7 edge in draw controls. Bears' senior midfielder Lisa Moynihan (Norwood, Mass.) led all players with six draws. Moynihan also recorded four ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Kelsi Brennan (Dedham, Mass.) checked in with a pair of caused turnovers and five ground balls.
BSU junior netminder Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) turned aside eight shots to record her 15th career win. Junior Mia Wysocki (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Sophia Brooks-Randall (Providence, R.I.) combined to make five saves between the pipes for the Lyons.
Along with her team-leading three goals, Baldwin also added a
team-best seven ground balls, four draw controls and three caused
turnovers. Senior attack Deyscha Smith (Boston, Mass.) and freshman attack Caroline Flynn (Williamstown, Mass.) also scored for Mount Holyoke.
Both teams are back in action next week. The Lyons travel to
Westfield State University on Tuesday evening (Mar. 5) to take on the
Owls at five, while the Bears entertain the Nor'easters of the
University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 9) at one.
