Corsano Breaks Program's Career Scoring Record; Springfield Women's Lacrosse Upends Coast Guard, 17-6

New London, Conn. - April 7, 2018 - Senior attacker Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) produced her second-consecutive five-goal performance on Saturday afternoon, breaking the Springfield College women's lacrosse program record for goals in a career, as the Pride defeated Coast Guard, 17-6, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

With the win, the Pride is now 7-5 overall with a 2-1 mark in the NEWMAC, while the Bears fall to 8-3 on the year, with a 2-1 record against league opponents. Corsano, who came into the game with 159 career goals, pushed her four-year total to 164, surpassing the previous record holder, Holly Carmody, who had 159 goals from 2003-2006. 

Springfield College held a 40-13 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, while also securing 18 draw

controls compared to Coast Guard's seven. The Pride also held a 21-11 margin in ground balls in the victory.

Along with five goals from Corsano, freshman attacker Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.) finished the day with four points on three goals and an assists, while Kayla Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) also recorded four points on a pair of goals and two helpers. Defensively, Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) and Sarnacki both caused three turnovers apiece, while Corsano pulled down a game-high nine draw controls. Taylor Kane (Woburn, Mass.) also had five draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Springfield College scored the first nine goals of the game, as Julia Bireley (Franklin, Mass.) found the back of the net just 2:05 into the contest, before the Pride rattled off five goals in a span of 2:27 to take an 8-0 lead over the Bears, before Corsano nothced her fourth of the half at the 4:19 mark to make it 9-0, Pride. After two goals from Coast Guard, Bianca Dos Santos (Danbury, Conn.) wrapped up the first-half converting a free-position chance to give the Pride a 10-2 cushion at the break.

Coast Guard struck twice in 1:46 to open up the second half, cutting their deficit to six, before Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Sarnacki scored back-to-back goals to force a 12-4 advantage from the visitors. Coast Guard would notch their fifth goal of the contest at the 19:57 mark of the second half, but from there, Springfield College went on a five-goal run to make it 17-5, capped on a goal from Katie Campbell (Somers, N.Y.), to seal the victory for the Pride.

Springfield College will return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when it will host Smith on Stagg Field at 7:30 p.m.
