- The Lead: The MIT softball team shutout Emerson College in both ends of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader this afternoon in Cambridge. The Engineers won game one in five innings by an 8-0 final score before topping the Lions, 7-0, in the nightcap.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:
- A six run bottom of the second and an outstanding pitching performance by junior Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) was the difference in game one for MIT. After back-to-back singles by Michelle Wist (Cypress, Texas) and Zoe Hinton (Aurora, Colo.) to lead off the second inning, Sierra Rosenzweig (Anchorage, Alaska) doubled home Wist and Jasmin Joseph (Woodland Hills, Calif.) singled in Hinton for the 2-0 lead. Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.), who reached via a walk, scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Lee (Saratoga, Calif.) and then Sarah Von Ahn (West Linn, Ore.) roped a two-run single which brought home Joseph and Goetz to make the score 5-0.
- Senior Katherine Shade (Glencoe, Ill.), who reached base on an error with two outs in the second, stole second base and drew a throw, which allowed Von Ahn to come across and score MIT's sixth run of the frame.

After Von Ahn notched an infield hit of her own, Wist lined the ball to deep left center to put the game out of reach.
- Nasser, who retired the final 12 batters she faced after giving up a leadoff single in the second, returned to the circle in the fifth and got Emerson out 1-2-3 to earn the game one victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Nasser improved to 8-2 this spring with a complete game two-hit shutout of the Lions in game one. Nasser, who threw just 65 pitches, 42 of which were strikes, added one strikeout to her line this afternoon. Emerson's Neely Eddleston dropped to 9-2 as she tossed four innings and allowed ten hits, eight runs (seven earned), two walks and struck out four.
- Von Ahn was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI's and Joseph went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI for the Engineers in game one. MIT produced ten hits, which came from seven different batters in the lineup. Additionally, Joseph, Von Ahn and Shade all stole one base apiece in the opener.

- As they did in game one, the Engineers used a six run frame and shutout pitching from freshman Colleen Campbell (Snoqualmie, Wash.) and junior Amber VanHemel (Coconut Creek, Fla.) to secure the two-game sweep.
- The Engineers scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second when Wist crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Wist reached base on a single through the left side, moved to second on a ground out by Hinton and to third on a wild pitch.

- As they did in game one, the Engineers used a six run frame and shutout pitching from freshman Colleen Campbell (Snoqualmie, Wash.) and junior Amber VanHemel (Coconut Creek, Fla.) to secure the two-game sweep.

Rosenzweig then cleared the bases with a three-run double to left and then Joseph brought her home on a triple to deep center, which made the score 5-0. A squeeze bunt by Goetz allowed Joseph to score MIT's sixth run and an RBI double to left center by Lee gave the Engineers a 7-0 lead.
- VanHemel got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth and then shutdown Emerson 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to secure the two-game sweep of the Lions.

- Campbell earned the win (4-1) for the Engineers as she tossed the first four innings, allowed four hits and struck out four batters. VanHemel pitched the final three frames and allowed just three batters to reach base to earn her second save of the spring. Emerson's Casey Tsamis moved to 2-3 for the Lions as she allowed one earned run, two hits and a walk in just one inning of work.
- Lee went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Rosenzweig went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI's in game two for MIT. Goetz, Lee and Von Ahn all also stole single bases in the nightcap.
