MEDFORD - The #15 Tufts men's tennis team defeated Vassar 9-0 on Saturday at Voute Courts in the first of their two matches on the day. The match was the Jumbos' spring home opener and was their first contest since returning from their March California trip.
The Jumbos opened the match with strong all-around doubles play, losing just three games total in the three matches. Rohan Gupte and Zain Ali took down Brewers pair Jeremy Auh and Nick Zuczek 8-1 in No. 1 doubles. Carl-Herman Grant and Nathan Niemiec added to Tufts' success in No. 2 doubles, beating Vassar's Jamie Anderson and Dom Demeterfi 8-2.
Zach Shaff and Ross Kamin swept No. 3 doubles for the Jumbos, 8-0, besting Nicolas Demaria and Robin Drummond.
Tufts' kept rolling in singles play, as the Jumbos won each match in straight sets. Gupte, #34 in ITA rankings, defeated David Gandham 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1.
Ben Biswas took down Vassar's Auh 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. Shaff followed up his earlier doubles dominance in the No. 3 singles match, besting Anderson 6-3, 6-1.
The Jumbos looked particularly strong in the No. 4-6 singles matches, with no player dropping more than three games. Freshman Owen Bartok defeated Demeterfi 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 contest. At No. 5, Justin Brogan took down Zamir Birnbach 6-1, 6-1. Kamin had success in singles play as well, winning at No. 6 6-1, 6-2 over the Brewers' Zuczek.
Head coach Karl Gregor's Jumbos will try to sweep the Saturday doubleheader when they face Babson this afternoon at the Babson Tennis Courts at 2:00 p.m. Vassar is back in action on April 14, when they travel to face #28 RPI.
