Babson Park, Mass. - April 7, 2018 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell to Babson, 11-8, on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field, as the Pride surrendeder six unanswered goals in the final quarter to suffer its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) loss of the season. Springfield College is now 6-4 overall with a 1-1 mark in league play, while Babson improves to 5-5 on the year with a 2-0 record against league opponents.
Babson scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to overcome a three-goal deficit and escape with the 11-8 victory. Babson outshot the Pride, 46-35 over 60 minutes of play and picked up 42 ground balls compared to Springfield's 34. In net, senior goalkeeper Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) made 10 saves, while his counterparts, Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Center, N.Y.) and Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) combined for 10 saves in the win.
Leading the Pride offensively was Matt Allen (Chevy Chase, Md.), who had three goals, while
Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine) and Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) added three points apiece, including two goals and an assist. At the face-off "x", Joseph Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) went 12-for-22 with six ground balls, while Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.) was the Beavers' best of the day, going 8-for-16 with five ground balls in the win.
With 8:05 to play in the first quarter, Preston converted a feed from Habich to give the Pride a 1-0 lead, before Preston found the back of the net again 2:09 into the second quarter to make it 2-0, Springfield. From there, Babson would even the score at two, but Habich and Ray McCarthy (Somers, Conn.) would score back-to-back goals just 52 seconds apart to make it 4-2, Pride, with 5:02 to play in the half. With one second left until the break, Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) converted a feed from Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) to send the hosts into the locker room facing a one-goal deficit.
Allen scored twice within 34 seconds to open up the second half, granting the Pride a 6-3 cushion, but Babson would answer at the 9:31 mark when Ethan Carpenter (Orlando, Fla.) found the back of the net to make it 6-4. After Habich converted man-up, Babson kept pace with a goal from Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.), but Allen would bury his third of the quarter with 14 ticks on the clock to give the Pride an 8-5 lead heading to the fourth.
It was all Babson in the final stanza as the Green and White potted six unanswered goals to prevail over Springfield College, 11-8.
The Pride will return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when it will host Middlebury at 5 p.m. on Stagg Field.
