Springfield Field Hockey Earns No. 1 GPA Across All Divisions; 21 Student-Athletes Garner NFHCA Individual Accolades

Chandler, Ariz. - April 3, 2018 - The Springfield College field hockey program was recognized for its hard work in the classroom by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFCHA), as it earned the ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award for the sixth time in the last eight seasons. 

Of the 133 Division III field hockey programs that earned ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team honors, Springfield College earned the best grade-point average in the nation, as it posted a cumulative GPA of 3.78. In fact, the Pride's cumulative GPA of 3.78 was the highest across all divisions in the NCAA.

Additionally, the Pride had 21 of its 22 student-athletes named to the 2017 ZAG Field Hockey / NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, which recognizes student-athletes that have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

From the 2017 team, the honorees included: Kirsten Oliver (Vernon Center, N.Y.), Tirzah McMillan (Haddonfield, N.J.), Belle Copponi (Dover, Mass.), Hannah Boylan (Mansfield, Mass.), Emily Knobel (North Attleboro, Mass.), Amanda Picozzi (Wyoming, R.I.), Taylor Field (Eastham, Mass.), Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Paige Laperle (Auburn, Mass.), Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, Mass.), Gabby Guerard (Derry, N.H.), Morgan Bronk (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), Taylor Low (Longmeadow, Mass.), Patricia Murphy (Wilbraham, Mass.), Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.), Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.), MaryKate Pestana (Enfield, Conn.), Megan Goyda (Sandy Hook, Conn.), Allie Skinner (Mansfield, Mass.), Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, Conn.) and Lauren Trifone (Milton, Mass.).

Of those 21 student-athletes honored, two members of the field hockey program were named ZAG Field Hockey / NFHCA Division III National Scholars of Distinction, which is given to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.90 or higher.Those honorees include: Gabby Guerard and Kirsten Oliver. Guerard has now collected the honor for the second-straight season.

Additionally, five student-athletes have been recognized for four-consecutive years, including Sweet and Mahoney.

MIT Field Hockey Receives NFHCA Academic Accolades

Gilbert, Ariz. (March 29) – The MIT field hockey team had 12 student-athletes claim a spot on the National Academic squad, with one being named a Scholar of Distinction, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). In addition, the Engineers collected their 16th straight National Academic Team Award by achieving a minimum 3.0 team GPA on a 4.0 scale during the 2017 fall semester.

To be eligible for the National Academic Squad, student-athletes must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year. Seniors Amanda Lowery (Encinitas, Calif.) and Ellen Mulé (Alexandria, Va.) earned their third consecutive selections while seniors Anna Neuman (Abingdon, Md.), Katie Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.), and Emily Penn (Columbia, Md.) along with juniors Allie Shepard (Wexford, Pa.) and Katherine Stoll (Avon, Conn.) were repeat qualifiers. First-time honorees for MIT were junior Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) and sophomores Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.), Taylor Grey (Horsham, Pa.), Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif.), and Jacqueline Liao (Great Neck, N.Y.).

Higuchi was also tabbed for Scholar of Distinction accolades, which recognizes student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year. A total of 13 MIT student-athletes have earned a spot on this list since the award was established in 2012 with Higuchi being the Engineers' first qualifier since 2014.

River Hawks Add Seven Newcomers for 2018

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell Field Hockey Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk has added seven newcomers to her squad for the 2018 season, as announced on Wednesday.
 
The River Hawks will welcome Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario), Rose Cuozzo (Wilmington, Mass.), Grace Davis (Waterloo, Ontario), Kailey Donaldson (Newport News, Va.), Hannah Keefe (Westford, Mass.), Lindsey Kilpatrick (Manlius, N.Y.) and Taryn MacKinnon (Plaistow, N.H.).
 
"We are very excited for the 2018 incoming class," said Hlebichuk. "They are geographically diverse and all have great experiences playing at high levels with their individual club programs. Collectively, they will bring a great energy, tremendous talent and most importantly a great work ethic to the UMass Lowell field hockey program. Great things are expected from all of them over the course of their four years at UMass Lowell."

Huskies Overwhelm Vikings 7-0

Salem, Mass. -- Kaylie Andrews (Kittery, ME) and Tayla Smedberg (Oxford, ME) each scored two goals as the Huskies of Southern Maine dominated the Vikings of Salem State 7-0 Tuesday on 'Think Pink' night at Alumni Field. The Huskies improve to 7-8 and 6-3 in the Little East Conference while the Vikings slide to 1-10 and 0-9 in the LEC.

Southern Maine's attack on offense allowed the Huskies to control the clock as they possessed the ball for the majority of the first half. Moving the ball well, the Huskies were able to score three goals in the half on eight shots on net. At the 11:15 mark, Southern Maine tallied their first goal of the contest when Kaylie Andrews (Kittery, ME) put home a rebound that was shot by Kerigan Demers (Westbrook, ME). One minute later, the Huskies added to their lead when Makayla Garvin (Springvale, ME) rang the back of the net when she received a pass from Jennifer Poulin (Winslow, ME) from the left side of the net for the easy goal. Just before the end of the half Andrews added her second goal of the game to give Southern Maine a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Huskies continued to surge in the second half as they added a total of four scores, including two goals in a row within a minute span from Smedberg that gave Southern Maine a large lead at 4-0 with 25 minutes remaining in the half. Lindsay Jackson (Readfield, MA) tacked on the final Huskies' goal to make the score 7-0.  Salem State had no answer against the Huskies as they didn't get off one shot in the second half. Southern Maine outshot the Vikings 15-2 for the game as Salem State goaltender Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, MA) made six saves.

Huskies' goalie Elizabeth Amadei (Falmouth, ME) had an easy night in net as she only had to make one save in the shutout.

Salem State hits the field again on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they travel to Fitchburg State to take on the Falcons at 6:00 p.m. The Huskies look to improve their record on Oct 15. When they travel to Worcester State to take on the Lancers at 11:00 a.m.

DeLima hands out three assists, Carlson scores game-winner in 63^rd minute

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (October 4, 2016) – The Western New England University field hockey team strengthened its hold on third place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) standings with a 4-3 victory over Salve Regina University this evening at Gaudet Field.

Top Performers
• Junior forward Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) was credited with assists on three of Western New England's goals, including classmate Michelle Carlson's (Hackettstown, N.J.) game-winner late in the second half.
• Freshman forward Madison Barron (Lebanon, Pa.) scored her second and third goals of the season.
• Sophomore midfielder Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y.) provided an assist on Barron's first goal, before giving the Golden Bears a 2-1 lead at the 52:35 mark.

• Junior midfielder Amber Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) led the way for the Seahawks, registering a hat trick with one goal in the first half and two in the second.

Game Review
• Cody staked Salve Regina to a 1-0 lead just 2:43 into the contest, but Western New England equalized on Barron's first goal of the night at the 7:49 mark to cap the scoring in the first half.
• Antinozzi broke the 1-1 deadlock with 17:25 remaining in regulation, marking the start of a ten-minute stretch that featured five goals between the two teams.
• Cody tied the score for the second time at the 56:03 mark, but Barron put the Golden Bears back in front just 1:23 later. Cody's third goal of the night followed 1:14 after Barron's tally, setting the stage for Carlson's eventual game-winner with 7:55 remaining.

Notes
• Salve Regina held a 21-18 edge in shots and a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
• Western New England junior goalkeeper Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) finished with ten saves, her fourth 10+ save effort this season.

Fast Start Helps No. 8 Field Hockey Knock Off No. 20 Wellesley, 4-1

WELLESLEY, Mass.—Junior Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) scored once in each half to help eighth-ranked Babson College defeat 20th-ranked Wellesley College, 4-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon.

With its sixth consecutive win, Babson is now 11-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Wellesley has dropped three straight games to fall to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Staci Swallow (South Portland, Mass.) and sophomore Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) each scored once for the Beavers, who got assists from senior Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) and junior Jacki Merrigan (Canton, Mass.). First-year Deirdre Barry (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished with one save in the win.

Senior Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) converted a feed from classmate Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) late in the second half for the Blue's lone goal. Sophomore Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) made five first-half saves, while sophomore Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) turned away four shots in the second half for the hosts.

The Green and White dominated a first half that saw it outshoot Wellesley 10-0 and score three times in the opening 18 minutes to take control of the match. Tango notched her 12th goal of the year just 2:58 into the contest off a penalty corner and Towers scored the first of her two markers off a feed from Spofford to make it 2-0 at the 7:22 mark.

Swallow notched her sixth tally of the year for a three-goal lead in the 18th minute and the Beavers narrowly missed a chance to push their lead to four two minutes later when Towers' shot was cleared off the line by Blue junior Fallon Oeser (Brookfield, Conn.).

Towers would score her league-leading 14th goal of the year with 19:56 to go in the game before Sharkin broke up Babson's shutout bid with her fourth tally of the year at the 62:44 mark.

The Beavers finished with a 15-3 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Smith at 12 p.m., while Wellesley visits WPI for a 10 a.m. start.

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are now 14-28-2 all-time against the Blue and have won two straight in the series against Wellesley.
•    Despite falling just over seven minutes short of a school-record sixth consecutive shutout, Babson set a new program record of 419:33 between goals going back to its September 13 loss against Tufts.
•    With two more goals, Towers extended her points streak to 12 games and has at least one tally in 11 matches this fall.
•    Babson has scored three or more goals in nine of its 11 wins had has won 25 straight games when putting up at least three markers.

Artz Hero Again as No. 7 Field Hockey Edges No. 14 Wellesley, 1-0

MEDFORD – The No. 7 Tufts field hockey team got an early goal from senior Annie Artz and held on to that lead to top No. 14 Wellesley, 1-0, at Ounjian Field on Tuesday evening.  Artz has now scored in all four of the Jumbos games this year, including two game-winners.

With the win the Jumbos move to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in NESCAC play.  The Blue fall to 4-2 this year and 1-0 in NEWMAC play.

No. 17 Terriers Top No. 16 Northwestern, 2-1, in Season Opener

DURHAM, N.H. - The No. 17 Boston University field hockey team had a successful start to its 2016 season on Friday, earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over No. 16 Northwestern in the opening round of the Wildcat Classic at Memorial Field on the campus of the University of New Hampshire. Junior Allie Renzi scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist while senior Cammy Jensen turned in a nine-save performance in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After taking a 1-0 lead into the second half, BU got what would be a huge insurance goal in the 51st minute on a tally by senior Amanda Cassera.
• Northwestern got on the board with 14:24 to play but the Terriers held on late to secure the season-opening win.
• BU overcame a slow start and got on the board in the 14th minute when junior Allie Renzi placed a low shot just inside the left post from the top of the circle on an assist from classmate Kali Shumock. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.
• Renzi, who moved up to the midfield after playing as a back last season, set up Cassera's goal as the senior took the pass and spun around the middle of the circle before firing an elevated shot past Northwestern netminder Lindsay von der Luft, who finished with two saves on the day. 
• Dominique Masters ended BU's shutout bid when she dribbled in from the right side and snuck a high shot past Jensen.

GAME NOTES

• Jensen made five of her saves in the opening half and three of her four stops after halftime came on one Wildcat corner.
• The Terriers were outshot by the Wildcats, 14-6, and Northwestern held a 5-2 edge in corners. 
• Cassara's goal was the 30th of her career, moving her into a tie for seventh all-time at BU with Jacinda MacLeod '13.
• All three of the Terriers' starting backs (Ally Hammel, Jordyn Beesmer, Maika Akroyd) made their BU debut at the position. Hammel scored seven goals as a striker last year during her rookie season.
• Beesmer and freshman Kiley Gallagher made their first collegiate starts. 
• This was the 12th meeting between the two schools and resulted in the Terriers' first win over Northwestern since a 3-0 home win in 2008, ending a three-game skid.

U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team Captures Fourth Straight Victory Earning a Total of 12 Event Points

Only a few weeks before the Olympic Games during the Citi Rio Send-Off Series, India and the U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team’s walked away with one win apiece. The moment to prove who has enough gusto to edge out the other was revealed on the ultimate stage at the Deodoro Olympic Park under the spotlight of watchful eyes of those in the stadium stands and those glued to their television sets at home. Keeping match tempo in fifth gear, Team USA drove hard, engines at full tilt for 60 minutes to leave the pitch as victors with a goal line 3-0. The missing element between the Citi Rio Send-Off Series and the Olympic Games? USWNT dynamite defender and captain Lauren Crandall (Doylestown, Pa.). A key contributor in the backfield and leadership, Crandall was out recovering and prepping in the weeks leading up to Rio. Means Named Framingham State University Head Field Hockey Coach

Framingham, Mass. – Framingham State University Director of Athletic Tom Kelley is pleased to announce the hiring of Ashley Means as the Rams head field hockey coach.  Means served as an assistant coach with the field hockey program during the 2015 season and is currently an assistant coach with the Rams women's lacrosse team.

Means spent eight seasons as the head coach of the girls' lacrosse program at Natick High School.  During her time at Natick, Means has led her teams to three post season appearances including the program's first ever Bay State League Herget Division Championship in 2014.  In addition to coaching lacrosse, Means has served as the varsity girls' ice hockey coach at Framingham High School.

Mean is currently employed with the Natick Public Schools as a special education paraprofessional.  Means is a graduate of Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT where she earned a bachelor's degree in English Language Arts and was a four year member of the women's ice hockey team.

Wheaton Field Hockey Inducts Seven to Academic All-Conference Team

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team is inducting seven of its members to the 2015 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Academic All-Conference Team.

Sophomore Kelsey Buckley, Mikaela Coombs, Hailey Kohler, Emma Peterson, Alissa Rams, Hannah Southard and junior Amelia Gage are among the honorees for Wheaton out of the 56 chosen in the NEWMAC.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2015 spring semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

The NEWMAC consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Wheaton finished the 2015 season 9-8 overall and 1-7 in the NEWMAC.

Southern Maine Edges Field Hockey 2-1 in Overtime

Gorham, Maine  – Junior Leanne Reichert (Portland, Maine) scored on a diving play in the 91st minute to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 overtime victory against the Framingham State University Rams in a key Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Playing in its fifth overtime game of the season, Southern Maine improves to 6-10 overall and 3-5 in the Little East Conference.  The win snapped a three-game slide by the Huskies and helped them stay in the running for the final LEC playoff spot. Dropping its fourth straight contest, Framingham State is now 2-11 overall and 1-7 in the Little East.

The Rams took the early lead over USM in the first half on a penalty stroke following a green card in the circle on a Huskies' defender.  Framingham State freshman Meaghann Ackerman (Littleton, Mass.) converted the stroke launching a shot in the upper right corner with 8:17 gone in the half for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. 

Despite outshooting the Rams 12-3 in the first half, Southern Maine trailed FSU through the frame.

No. 11 Field Hockey Grabs 3-1 NEWMAC Win at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – No. 11 Wellesley College field hockey scored three unanswered goals to defeat Springfield College, 3-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The Blue improve to 5-1 in conference play and 11-2 overall following their third consecutive victory, while the Pride slide to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.

Springfield outshot the Blue 3-0 in the opening 10 minutes of play, capping the early flurry with a goal from sophomore Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) at 9:34. Senior Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) added the assist on the play, as Sweet recorded her third marker of the year.

The Blue turned the tide after the slow start, answering back at 18:59 when seniorHannah Flesch (Rockville, Md.) used an assist from first year Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.) to beat Springfield goalkeeper Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.).

Villa made four saves in the contest for Springfield. Wellesley goalkeeper Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass) turned away three shots to record her twelfth win of the season.

The Blue took the lead for good just before halftime when junior Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) found the back of the cage for the fifth time this season, thanks to an assist from first year Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.).

Huang would add her second assist of the day in the second half, as senior Anissa Sridhar (London, Ontario) scored her team-leading tenth goal of the season at 58:49 to close out the scoring in the contest and give Wellesley the 3-1 win.

Wellesley finished the contest with a 17-7 advantage in shots and a commanding 14-4 edge in penalty corners.

Next up, the Blue return home on Tuesday, October 20, for a key NEWMAC matchup with MIT at 4:00 PM. Springfield will be in action later in the day on Tuesday, as they are set to travel to Clark for a 7:00 PM start.

Rondeau, Wilson Lead Field Hockey over Anna Maria, 6-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and junior midfielder Amy Wilson (Falmouth, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Simmons College field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over visiting Anna Maria College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks have won five of their last seven games and improve to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the AMCATS fall to 11-5 and 3-2.

Simmons outshot Anna Maria by a count of 9-5 in each half.

No. 11 Field Hockey Tops No. 16 Tufts, 1-0, on Late Goal from Peterson

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Junior Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored the only goal of the game with 6:56 left in regulation as No. 11 Wellesley College field hockey edged out No. 16 Tufts University in non-conference play on Thursday at the Wellesley College Athletics Fields Complex.
Wellesley improves to 11-2 on the season, snapping a seven game losing streak to Tufts by earning the program's first win over the Jumbos since the Blue took a 3-2 win in overtime on September 12, 2007. Tufts drops to 8-4 overall.

Wellesley capitalized on the last of four penalty corner opportunities, as Peterson scored her eighth of the season on assist from Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.). The ball briefly made its way outside the circle before the Blue corralled it back toward Hwang. The first year forward then shoveled the ball toward Peterson who deposited it on the right post.

Peterson's goal was the only blemish on the day for Tufts' first year goalkeeper Emily Polinski (East Brunswick, N.J.), as she made a pair of saves.

Wellesley junior goalkeeper Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) made four saves to record the shutout, including an outstanding kick save midway through the second half on rip from the top of the circle by Tufts senior Dakota Sikes-Keilp (Montclair, N.J.).

The Jumbos finished with an 8-4 advantage in corners and a 6-5 advantage in shots but in the end it was the Blue that came out with the 1-0 win in a tightly contested contest.

Wellesley will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Springfield on Saturday, October 17, at 1:00 PM. Tufts will play at Bates on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
