Springfield College Recognizes Outstanding Athletic Year At 2016 All Sports Recognition Night

Springfield, Mass. – Celebrating all of the outstanding athletic achievements from the 2015-16 academic year, Springfield College recognized the most outstanding performances and student-athletes at the annual All Sports Recognition Night held on Tuesday evening in Blake Arena.

The evening marked another especially successful year in athletics at Springfield College. Headlining the group was senior Jon Zirna (East Amherst, N.Y.), who became just the third Springfield College student-athlete in the past 32 years to reach the NCAA Division I Men's Gymnastics Championship individual finals at Ohio State.  The men's volleyball program had another remarkable season, as the team finished runner-up at the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championships, while the women's soccer team won NEWMAC Championship.  Additionally, the women's volleyball team reached the NCAA Division III Championship Sweet 16 for the third time in six years and the men's soccer team captured their second ECAC Division III New England title in the past three campaigns.

Individually, Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.) earend a pair of NCAA All-America honors in the pool as she took fourth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 breast.  Courtney Luscier (Pittsfield, Mass.) placed seventh in the 60 meter dash, Marissa DeAngelo (Brookfield, Conn.) picked up a trio of NCGA All-America honors, and Tyler Keane (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Jake Benedict (Pukalski, N.Y.) each won NCAA Regional titles in wrestling.

In addition, the Dr. Craig Poisson announced that the "True Pride Challenge" was an overwhelming success, with the Friends of Springfield College Athletics donor base growing by nearly 40% during the three-day challenge in April.
