Babson Men's Lacrosse Tripped Up by Union, 12-8

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) scored four times but Babson College was unable to rally from an early three-goal deficit and suffered a 12-8 loss to visiting Union College in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the loss, Babson falls to 1-2 on the year, while Union improves to 2-0 overall.

Sophomore Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) scored twice and senior Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and first-year Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) each finished with a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Classmates Max Mandia (New Hartford, N.Y.) and John Titolo (Kinnelon, N.J.) combined to win 10-of-23 face-offs, while fellow first-year Jack Tague (Fairfield, Conn.) scooped up a team-high six ground balls.

Junior John Edmonds (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Kerry Lyne (Wellesley, Mass.) both had four goals to lead the Dutchmen. Senior Jordan Cooper (Bethesda, Md.) dished out four assists, junior Alex Newhouse (Parkland, Fla.) won 11-of-18 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls, and four players caused turnovers apiece in the win.

Lyne scored twice in the first quarter to help Union build a 4-1 lead, and then added his third tally of the afternoon to extend the margin to 6-2 with 4:41 to go in the second quarter. O'Hanlon notched his fifth goal of the season less than a minute later to cut the Babson deficit to three, but Edmonds scored at the 2:22 mark to make it 7-3 at halftime.

Mishkind scored twice in the third quarter to keep the Beavers within four, and the Green and White took advantage of three straight Union penalties with man-up goals by Fabel and Mishkind to get as close as 10-7 less than two minutes into the fourth. The momentum was short-lived though, as Edmonds pushed the Union edge back to four with 12:33 left.

Dutchmen first-year Aidan Flood (Glastonbury, Conn.) tacked on an insurance goal with 8:45 remaining to match the visitors' biggest lead of the game.

Babson scored three times on 10 extra-man opportunities, while Union finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage. The Dutchmen also finished with an edge in shots (41-36) and groundballs (39-32).

The Beavers return to action on Tuesday when they host Curry at 4 p.m., while Union takes on Williams on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's loss was just the sixth in the last 21 games at MacDowell Field for Babson.
• Mishkind has scored four goals in two of the Beavers' first three games this season.
• Fabel has now produced at least one point in 17 straight games going back to last year.

Babson Baseball Splits with Heidelberg, Otterbein at Snowbird Classic

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.—The Babson College baseball team split a pair of games on the second day of play at the Snowbird Classic on Saturday at South Country Regional Park. Following a 12-3 loss to Heidelberg University, the Beavers bounced back with a 13-3 victory over Otterbein University in their second game of the day.

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 12, Babson 3
Junior Nicholas Browne (Mount Laurel, N.J) went 2-for-4 with a home run and classmate Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) added a pair of hits, but the Beavers were unable to dig out of an early deficit and suffered their first loss of the season. Sophomore Alex DiMartino (Mahwah, N.J.) doubled and drove in a pair of runs in his first career start for the Green and White.

Despite getting just eight hits, the Student Princes took advantage of 13 walks and scored nine runs over the first three innings. Junior Matt Psychas (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and senior Kyle Slovick (Middlebury Heights, Ohio) both reached base four times and drove in three runs apiece, while junior Parker Fronk (Medina, Ohio) walked and scored twice in addition to driving in a pair of runs.

DiMartino plated senior Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) with a two-out double in the top of the second, but Heidelberg responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Student Princes sent 10 men to the plate and used two singles, four walks, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly to build a 6-1 advantage.

The Green and White stranded a pair of runners in the top of the third and the Student Princes extended their lead to 9-1 behind back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Psychas and Slovick. Browne homered to lead off the fourth and DiMartino drove in senior Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) with a sacrifice fly in the fifth for the Beavers, who stranded 12 in the loss.

Senior Teddy Carey (Upton, Mass.) shouldered the loss after allowing six runs in 1.1 innings. Senior Anthony Hadju (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) earned the win for Heidelberg, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking four in five innings of work.

GAME TWO: Babson 13, Otterbein 3
Sophomore Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with three RBI and Arena had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs in the Beavers' 19-hit onslaught against Otterbein. Seven different players finished with at least two hits in support of junior Michael Genaro (Greenwich, Conn.), who gave up three runs and struck out four over eight innings.

Following a scoreless first inning, Babson scored three times with two outs in the second. Sophomore Jake Oliger (Newtown, Conn.) and Browne hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners, and junior Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) and Valente followed with run-scoring base hits to make it 2-0. McHale then capped the frame with an RBI double to right center to extend the margin to three.
The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the second, but the Beavers responded with four more runs in the second. Sophomore Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) plated Arena with a double and then came around to score on another double by Jaun. Valente followed with a two-out, two-run single to center to make it 7-1.

The Green and White put the game away with four more runs, all with two outs, in the sixth inning. Arena drove in a pair with a double to left center, Harrington drove him in with a single two batters later, and Oliger followed with another RBI knock to give the Beavers an 11-1 lead.

Nine different players had a hit for Otterbein, which got back-to-back doubles from senior Dom Guzzi (New Kensington, Ohio) and junior Ben Beachy (Springboro, Ohio), and a single from classmate Tyler Thompson (Mentor, Ohio) to plate a pair of runs in the eighth. Senior John Kopnicky (Centerville, Ohio) shouldered the loss for the Cardinals after giving up seven runs on nine hits over five innings of work.

GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 0-1 all-time against Heidelberg and 2-1 against Otterbein.
• McHale extended his hitting streak to 14 games, and Arena has now reached base in 37 straight outings with a hit in both games on Saturday.
• Babson's 19 hits in Saturday's second game against Otterbein are its most since pounding out 20 in a 15-5 win over Springfield on April 23 of last season.

Babson Women's Lacrosse Dropped by Skidmore, 20-4

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Caz Szwajkowski (Rye, N.Y.) and first-year Emily Hirsch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) both scored five goals as visiting Skidmore College defeated Babson College, 20-4, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With the loss, Babson drops to 2-1 while Skidmore improves to 2-0.

Seniors Charlotte O'Halloran (Middletown, R.I.) and Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) and juniors Alexis Lenaghan (Hingham, Mass.) and Riley Buonagurio (Duxbury, Mass.) all scored once for the Beavers. Sophomore Maria Bravo (Windermere, Fla.) scooped up a team-high three ground balls, while the duo of sophomore Olivia Phelan (Wilton, Conn.) and first-year Caorlyn Fligor (Weston, Mass.) combined to make five saves in the loss.

Junior Natalie LeBeau (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) finished with three goals and two assists for the Thoroughbreds. Hirsch led all players with six draw controls and three caused turnovers to go along with three ground balls. Sophomore goalkeepers Caroline Kenlon (Manhasset, N.Y.) and Nicki Eckert (Glen Ridge, N.J.) combined to make six saves on the afternoon.

Skidmore took control of the game from the opening draw as Szwajkowski and Hirsch each scored twice to build a 4-0 lead just 3:24 into the contest. Harrigan got the Green and White on the board with a free-position strike at the 26:07 only to see the Thoroughbreds respond with an 11-goal run that pushed their advantage to 15-1 with under five minutes to go in the opening stanza.

Buonagurio converted a feed from first-year Georgia Salvatore (Westwood, Mass.) with 1:09 to go in the first half. Lenaghan notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season in transition just over six minutes into the second, and O'Halloran collected her second tally of the year with 4:58 to go in the game for the Beavers.

Skidmore outshot Babson 21-4 in the first half and won 11-of-17 draws in the opening period. Both teams finished the game with 14 turnovers.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. as the Beavers travel to Bates, while the Thoroughbreds venture to Utica.

GAME NOTES
• Babson is now 2-3 all-time against Skidmore, and prior to Saturday the last three games had been decided by a single goal.
• The Beavers were held below five goals for just the fifth time in 58 games going back to the start of the 2015 season.
• Saturday's loss snapped Babson's seven-game home winning streak.

No. 24 Softball Outslugs No. 20 Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Falls to No. 21 Central at NFCA Leadoff Classic

TUCSON, Ariz.—The 24th-ranked Babson College softball team split a pair of games on day two of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic on Saturday evening. The Beavers slugged their way past 20th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 15-5, before dropping the nightcap to No. 21 Central College, 5-0.

Babson and Central are both 2-2 on the year, while Wisconsin-Oshkosh sits at 6-2 overall.

GAME ONE: Babson 15, Wisconsin-Oshkosh 5
Sophomore Jacqueline Paul (Burlington, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with a double and five runs batted in, junior Annie Quine (Santa Monica, Calif.) was 3-for-3 with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored, and classmate Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) added three hits and drove two runs as part of the Beavers' 18-hit onslaught. Senior Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) and sophomores Victoria Casey (Emerson, N.J.) and Annie Mitchell (Rehoboth, Mass.) also added two hits apiece in the victory.

Quine staked the Green and White to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with her first homer of the season to right center. The Titans took advantage of a walk and an error to score three times in the bottom of the frame, but Babson responded with four more runs in the top of the second.

Casey and sophomore Josephine Mares (Houston, Texas) both singled, Quine walked, and Paul cleared the bases with a double following a pitching change by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Tango then capped the inning with an RBI single to extend the margin to 7-3.

The Beavers scored two more runs in the third and then got a two-out, two-run single from Casey to make it 11-3 in the fourth inning. Paul drove in two more runs as part of a four-run seventh inning in support of senior Ali Reilly (New Canaan, Conn.), who allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out six in 6.0 innings of relief.

Titans' junior Bailey Smaney (Howard, Wis.) was chased from the circle after giving up six runs on six hits in just 1.1 innings.

GAME TWO: Central 5, Babson 0
Following five scoreless frames, the Dutch strung together four singles and took advantage of two errors to score five times in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Tabitha Taylor (Grimes, Iowa) plated the first runs of the game with a two-run knock, and sophomore Kaitlyn Andersen (Davenport, Iowa) followed with another RBI single two batters later to give Central a 3-0 advantage.

The Dutch tacked on two more insurance runs on a pair of two-out errors by the Beavers.

Tango went 2-for-3 for the Green and White, which was limited to just five hits in the game. Mares, Paul and first-year Jamie Hoffman (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) also recorded a single in the loss. Sophomore Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went the distance for Babson and dropped to 0-2 on the year after giving up three earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six.
Junior Mariah Fritz (Tama, Iowa) fanned two and walked none to improve to 1-1 for Central.

TOURNAMENT NOTES
• The Beavers are now 1-0 all-time against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and 0-2 against Central.
• Babson's 15 runs against the Titans are its most since scoring 20 in the opening game of a doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut State back on April 24, 2015.
• The shutout by Central marked the first time the Beavers were held off the scoreboard since a 2-0 loss to Springfield in last season's NEWMAC Tournament.
• Tango extended her hitting streak to seven with a pair of multi-hit games, while Reilly has now won 10 straight decisions going back to last year.

No. 24 Softball Splits with No. 11 Christopher Newport and No. 6 Trine on Opening Day of NFCA Leadoff Classic

TUCSON, Ariz.—The 24th-ranked Babson College softball team opened the 2018 season by splitting with a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on the first day of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Leadoff Classic on Friday afternoon. The Beavers defeated 11th-ranked Christopher Newport, 6-4, in their first game of the day before falling to No. 6 Trine University, 3-2, in game two.

GAME ONE: Babson 6, Christopher Newport 4
Sophomore Jacqueline Paul (Burlington, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) doubled and drove in a pair of runs to help the Green and White win its season opener for the second year in a row. Senior Ali Reilly (New Canaan, Conn.) went the distance for the Beavers (1-1), allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking three.
Sophomore Liz Andrews (Chesapeake, Va.) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Captains. Classmate Laura Kate Moss (Mechanicsville, Va.) suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year after giving up three runs on seven hits in five innings.

Reilly worked out of a jam in the first down just a run and Babson pulled even in the fourth when junior Annie Quine (Santa Monica, Calif.) scored on sophomore Annie Mitchell's (Rehoboth, Mass.) two-out single. The Beavers went ahead for good an inning later as sophomore Victoria Casey (Emerson, N.J.) plated senior Nicole Civello (Huntington Station, N.Y. with a single, and Smith followed with a two-out RBI double to make it 3-1.

Christopher Newport (0-1) cut its deficit in half in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Beavers tacked on three more runs despite getting just one hit in the seventh. Sophomore Tori Roche (Andover, Mass.) scored on an error and Paul followed with a two-out, two-run single to push the margin to 6-2.

GAME TWO: Trine 3, Babson 2
The sixth-ranked Thunder, which is coming off a trip to the College World Series last season, rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to scratch out a one-run victory over the Beavers.
Sophomore Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) struck out 12 while giving up five hits and four walks in a complete-game effort for Babson. Junior Josephine Mares (Houston, Texas) tripled and scored, while Mitchell and Quine each drove in a run in the loss.

Sophomore Makenna Hartline (Niles, Mich.) smacked a three-run homer and senior Erica Robles (Long Beach, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a double for Trine (2-0). Sophomore Danielle Ray (Hamilton, Ohio) earned her first victory of the year after allowing five hits and three walks over seven innings.
Mares tripled to start the bottom of the first and scored two batters later on a single by Quine. The Green and White went down in order in the second and third innings, but doubled its advantage in the fourth when Mitchell drove in junior Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) with a two-out single.

Stock, who struck out the side in three of the first four innings, worked around an error in the fourth and back-to-back singles to start the fifth. First-year Kennedy Baugh (Walton, Ky.) walked to lead off the seventh, Robles singled to put runners on the corners, and Hartline followed with a three-run blast to give the Thunder a 3-2 advantage.

Casey drew a two-out walk in the last of the seventh, but Ray got a ground ball to third base to end the game.

TOURNAMENT NOTES
• Friday's matchups were the first in program history with both Christopher Newport and Trine.
• Reilly has won nine straight decisions going back to April of last season, while Quine has now reached base in eight consecutive games going back to last year.
• Tango extended her hitting streak to five games with a single in both outings.
• The Beavers are 12-7 going back to the start of last year in 1- and 2-run games.

WPI Baseball Hands Down 10-2 Judgement to Brandeis

Northboro, MA --- Junior Nick Comei (Haverhill, MA), senior Sean Greene (Hingham, MA) and senior John Caliri (Hanson, MA) all registered multiple hits as WPI defeated Brandeis 10-2 in a non-conference baseball contest Wednesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

The Engineers improve to 11-5 on the year while the Judges dip to 6-9 on the season.

Babson College Baseball Downs Plymouth State, 6-1, in Home Opener

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) and first-year Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) each drove in a pair of runs, and junior Ken Rotunno (East Islip, N.Y.) gave up just one run over seven innings as Babson College defeated Plymouth State University, 6-1, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With its fourth win in the last five games, Babson is now 6-3-1, while Plymouth State falls to 6-9 on the year.

Halpin was 2-for-3 with a home run, McHale had two hits, including a double, and sophomore Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Beavers. Junior Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.) also doubled, drove in a run and was one of six different players to score on the afternoon.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Wellesley College softball came up short in a comeback bid against the University of Scranton, 4-2, before dropping a 9-6 final in a tough third day of action at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida. Wellesley is now 2-4 on the season.

Scranton scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on for the remainder of the contest to take a 4-2 victory over the Blue. Senior Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa.) pitched a complete game to earn her first win of the season, scattering seven hits over seven inning and striking out six in seven innings.

MIT Softball Sweeps North Central (Ill.), Carthage On Day Four in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The MIT softball team swept a pair of games on Wednesday afternoon against North Central College (Ill.) and Carthage College at Legends Way 5. The Engineers defeated North Central in comeback fashion by a 5-3 score before earning a 5-2 victory over Carthage in game two.

MIT senior Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) earned the win (3-3) for the Engineers as she came on in relief in the fourth and tossed 3 1/3 perfect innings, including four strikeouts. Freshman Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) was handed the no decision in 3 2/3 innings allowing three runs (two earned), five hits, one walk, striking out two. North Central senior Andrea Starr (Elk Grove, Ill.) took the loss (3-2) throwing a complete game alongside five runs (all earned), six hits, six walks and three strikeouts.

Golden Bears Defeat Castleton, 16-12, for Third Consecutive Victory

Taylor Scialdone, Tori Cirocco lead Western New England with five goals each

CASTLETON, Vt. – Senior captains Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Tori Cirocco (Carmel, N.Y.) scored five goals each as the Western New England University women's lacrosse team posted a 16-12 victory at Castleton University this afternoon in non-conference action at Spartan Stadium.

Scialdone finished with a game-high eight points (five goals, three assists) while Cirocco had six (five goals, one assist) in the Golden Bears' (3-1) third consecutive victory. Senior Brooke Kumnick (Granby, Conn.) and sophomore Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) were also key offensive contributors, as Kumnick registered five points (two goals, three assists) and Winer dished out a game-high five assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Eagles started the scoring in the top of the third, with a single by senior Jessie Daulton bringing home freshman Danielle Thomas.
• The Bulldogs responded in the bottom half of the inning, quickly loading the bases. Kaylee Puailoa flew out to center field scoring one run with Alex Hugo scoring the second off a throwing error on the play.
• Boston College wouldn't wait long to answer back, retaking the lead in the top of the fourth. Murphy got things going with a single that plated junior Madison Paulson. A sacrifice fly from senior Megan Cooley would late bring home Murphy to give the Eagles a 3-2 edge midway through the fourth.

Harvard's Leung Qualifies for NCAAs with Victory in Platform Dive at Zone A Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore diver Jing Leung has qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet in the platform dive for the second consecutive year after winning the event at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in Annapolis, Maryland Wednesday.

Leung put up the top score of 504.95, finishing ahead of runner-up Addison Walkowiak of Rutgers, who registered a score of 495.40. Leung is returning to the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year. At the 2015 event in Greensboro, North Carolina, she placed 26th.

Leung's victory caps a solid performance for the Crimson at the Zone A Championships. On Monday, Mikaela Thompson and Alisha Mah reached the finals of the one-meter board competition.

Thompson led the way with a ninth-place finish, while Mah took 18th. Mah also competed in the three-meter event, placing 30th.

For the men, David Pfeifer notched top-25 finishes in the one- and three-meter dives. On Monday, he placed 23rd on the three-meter board and then placed 19th the next day in the one-meter.

Leung will join freshman Sonia Wang at the 2016 NCAA DI Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta March 16-19. Wang qualified in the 200 butterfly. Shane McNamara will represent Harvard at the 2016 NCAA DI Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 23-26, also in Atlanta, in the 100 breaststroke.

WPI Softball Edges St. Joseph's (ME), Falls to No. 19 Moravian at NTC Spring Games

Clermont, FL --- Freshman Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) batted 4-for-4 and helped chase home the winning run as WPI defeated St. Joseph's (ME), 2-1, before absorbing a 10-8 setback to No. 19 Moravian Wednesday in a morning-afternoon softball doubleheader at the NTC Spring Games.
The Engineers sit 4-2 and will enjoy a day off before taking on Waynesburg (PA) and Simmons on Friday at 11am and 1pm, respectively. The Monks (3-2) continue their day with a game against Austin while the Greyhounds (5-0) face Alfred at 3pm.

Tied 1-1 after six, sophomore RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) reached on a one-out miscue and scored thanks to a single by Wood that bounced past the centerfielder. The next five batters of the game went down in order for the 2-1 final.

Jackets Sting Scots in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.— Gordon Men's Tennis suffered its first loss of the spring season on Wednesday, falling to a strong Baldwin Wallace team 9-0. The Yellow Jackets proved too much for the Scots from top to bottom, taking all singles matches in straight sets to improve to 12-1 this year. Gordon drops to 4-2 and 2-1 on the spring trip.

The Jackets took all three doubles spots to kick off the match, but they only met resistance at the reshuffled one spot. Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Nate Lookwhy (Westborough, Mass.) hung tough with B-W's top group, but fell 8-4. Baldwin Wallace took the second and third flights, 8-1 and 8-2 respectively.

Lookwhy followed up his doubles match with a strong effort in singles, taking Kevin Fredrick (Archbold, Ohio) to the brink in a two-set match. The Scots rookie fell by a break in both sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Casady and senior Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) also fought valiantly in identical 6-2, 6-3 matches at one and five.

Gordon has another off day on Thursday before doubling up on matches in their final day in Hilton Head. The Fighting Scots matchup with Kutztown at 8 a.m. before a 3 p.m. match with Nebraska Wesleyan.

Wins over NYU, Case put Brandeis University softball alone in 2nd in UAA

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Brandeis University softball team earned a pair of victories on the second day of action at the 2016 University Athletic Association tournament today. The Judges opened with a 7-3 win over New York University and rallied for a 7-6 victory over Case Western Reserve. The Judges move over .500 for the first time this season at 5-4, while their 3-1 record matches their UAA win total from each of the last five seasons.

 

AGAINST NYU

• Brandeis scored runs in every other inning en route to the 7-3 win
• The Judges started in the first when they scored twice on one hit thanks to a lead-off double by rookie DP Keri Lehtonen (Oneco, Conn. / Plainfield) and two NYU errors.
• After two were out in the third, three-straight Judges reached, with rookie LF Marissa DeLaurentis (Centereach, N.Y. / St.John the Baptist Diocesesan) singling up the middle to give Brandeis a 3-0 lead.
• After stranding four through the first three innings, NYU broke through in the fourth thanks to a two-run double by Marissa Bella, but Brandeis junior Melissa Soleimani (Somerset, Mass./Somerset Berkeley) got a pop-up to get out of the inning.
• Brandeis answered in the next half-inning on an RBI single by junior Madison Hunter (Parker, Colo./Legend) and a double by DeLaurentis.

Poets Spoil Storybook Ending, 12-10

WHITTIER, Calif.— A second-half rally fell just short for Gordon Women's Lacrosse as host Whittier held on for a 12-10 victory over the Fighting Scots in a late-night matchup. The Poets avoided a late collapse by fending off the Gordon offense over the final five minutes and scored an insurance goal at the end to send the Scots to an 0-3 record. Whittier improves to 3-3.

Long scoring runs dominated this game from beginning to end. Whittier opened the game with three straight goals in fewer than three minutes time. Jess Hansen (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored the opener just a minute into the game, while Lexie Meanor (Sewickley, Pa.) made it a 2-0 game off of the impending draw control. Rebekah Delledera (Livermore, Calif.) made it a three-goal game with a power play goal just forty seconds later.

Gordon struck back with two goals by Olivia McCarrick (Glen Burnie, Md.) and Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) to close the gap, but another three-goal run by the Poets put some distance between the two squads.

Whittier held a 7-3 lead at the half.

Gordon owned the beginning of the second half with four straight goals, including back-to-back strikes by McCarrick. Blake Orndorff (Churchville, Md.) and Castelline netted the others to tie the game at the midway points of the half.

However, Gordon had a defensive breakdown over the next seven minutes, as Whittier scored four goals in a row to put Gordon on the brink. A timeout settled the Scots down and Castelline led the charge back to contention. The senior midfielder scored two goals in a minute, while McCarrick added another a minute later to make it a game again.

The Fighting Scots had several good looks over the final five minutes to tie the game, but Whittier keeper Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) made several big saves on free-position attempts to keep Gordon from completing a comeback.

Daniella Delledera (Livermore, Calif.) essentially ended Gordon's rally with an unassisted strike with 90 seconds to go.

For the Scots

• Castelline and McCarrick both finished with four goals apiece. Castelline had an eight-point day with all four of Gordon's assists.
• Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) made 10 saves in the loss.
• Gordon outshot Whittier 29-23 for the game.

Vikings Prevail 6-5 Over Suffolk

SALEM, Mass. - Salem State opened up their 2016 home campaign with a 6-5 victory over Suffolk University on Tuesday afternoon at the Central Campus Baseball Field. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness. The Vikings even their record at 1-1 while the Rams open 0-1.

Mike Richardson (Belmont, MA) earned the start for Salem State and went 4.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs with two strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Starter Kyle Turner (Nashua, NH) suffered the loss for Suffolk, lasting 4.2 innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, with eight strikeouts.. Ryan Pordes went the remaining 2.1 innings and limited the Vikings to three hits to keep the Rams in the game.

Salem State wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard. Mac Daniel Singleton (Everett, MA) reached first after getting hit by a pitch and a Mike Davis (Peabody, MA) single advanced the junior to second. Pre-season All-American second baseman Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) put Singleton in scoring position with a sacrifice fly, before Joe White (Bellingham, MA) singled to bring both Davis and Singleton home and make it a 2-0 game in favor of the hosts.

The two clubs went back-and-forth over the next three innings, each finding their stride. Down 2-0, Suffolk broke its silence in the top of the fifth not only getting on the scoreboard, but capturing a 4-2 lead with four runs. Drew Carter (Newburyport, MA) and Rob Marks (Revere, MA) hit back-to-back doubles that brought in Luke Ronchi (Randolph, NJ) and Jake Frasca (Darien, CT). Later, Seth Coiley (Arlington, MA) drew a bases loaded walk and Sean Cameron (Milford, MA) added an RBI groundout .

The Vikings countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Davis and Fecteau hit back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the score before Alex Toomey (Beverly, MA) added a sacrifice fly to give the Vikings a 5-4 advantage. Coiley tied the game again for Suffolk in the seventh with a run scoring single, but Salem state countered in the bottom of the inning as Dan Connors (Danvers, MA) drove in Toomey with what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI single.

Salem State was led by Connors, who had three hits and Davis (2-for-4, 2R, 1RBI). Singleton scored two runs while White collected a pair of hits with two RBI.

Sean Buckland (Lynn, MA) earned the win in relief. The senior pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Vikings, striking out four hitters and allowing two runs (one unearned).

Salem State heads to the Sunshine State for a seven-game, one-week tour opening up against Nichols Sunday, March 13. Suffolk heads to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational for its Spring Training trip where the Rams will face 10 opponents over nine days. The action for the Rams is scheduled to begin Friday, March 11 versus Montclair State.

UMass Divers Conclude NCAA Zone A Regional Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the second day in a row, Emma Roush reached the finals of the NCAA Zone A Regional Meet placing 13th on Tuesday afternoon in the three-meter event. Katie Polk placed 21st on the three-meter board, while men's diver Trent Kindvall finished 38th in the one-meter event.

Roush also placed 13th on the one-meter board in Monday's opening day of competition. For the three-meter event, she scored a combined 539.25 points for both the preliminary and final round. She started the day with 272.65 points which placed her ninth in the preliminary/quarterfinal round and earned her a spot in the finals.

Polk scored 238.45 points to place 21st overall and just 12 points outside of the finals round.
Kindvall scored 232.45 points in the opening round for the men's one-meter competition.
