WPI Baseball Hands Down 10-2 Judgement to Brandeis

Northboro, MA --- Junior Nick Comei (Haverhill, MA), senior Sean Greene (Hingham, MA) and senior John Caliri (Hanson, MA) all registered multiple hits as WPI defeated Brandeis 10-2 in a non-conference baseball contest Wednesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

The Engineers improve to 11-5 on the year while the Judges dip to 6-9 on the season.

Caliri delivered the first RBI of the game in the bottom of the second. Junior Ryan Tettemer
(Westfield, MA) launched a solo shot to center to even it up at 1-1 just two pitches in to the third.
The Engineers then exploded for eight in the third. Senior Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA) got things going with a two-RBI double to left center. After the Judges cut down a runner at the plate, WPI used consecutive RBI knocks, including a Caliri ground-rule double, to force a pitching change. Senior Vinny D'Ambrosio (Mahopac, NY) and junior Nick Comei (Haverhill, MA) combined for three RBI on back-to-back doubles down the left field line for the 9-1 advantage after three.

A junior Jay Schaff (Cheshire, CT) sacrifice fly produced the second Brandeis run of the game in the top of the fourth. Including the final out in the third, the Judges set down 12 Engineers in-a-row before yielding a four-pitch walk to DJ Ouellette in the home half of the seventh. Over the same timeframe, Brandeis left five aboard and went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

WPI used nine eight pitchers while Brandeis used four. Freshman Sam Bacchaocchi (Freetown, MA) was the only Engineer to work a pair of innings while classmate Tyler Weiss (Monroe, CT) benefitted from the decision and freshman Robert Chase (Grand Isle, VT) struck out three of the five batters he faced in the eighth. Brandeis junior Anthony Nomakeo (Westfield, MA) was tagged with the loss.

Comei batted 3-for-5 with two doubles, a stolen base, a pair of RBI and a run scored. Greene went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored while Caliri was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. D'Ambrosio and Capuano each added a double and two RBI. Freshman Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI) also chipped in with a stolen base while Comei and Caliri combined to turn a double play.

Tettemer finished 3-for-4 and senior Cam Shaw (E. Setauket, NY) doubled for the guests.

WPI opens NEWMAC play Saturday with a noon set at Wheaton. Brandeis heads to UMass Boston for a 3:30pm first pitch.
