Wellesley Lacrosse Edged by Eastern Conn. State, 16-5, in Non-Conference Action

MANSFIELD, Conn.-- Wellesley College lacrosse dropped a 16-5 setback to Eastern Connecticut State in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex. The Warriors improve to 4-5 overall, while the Blue drop to 0-10 on their season.

Sophomore Alyssa Powers (Ellington, Conn.) paced Eastern Conn. State with four goals and two assists and senior Katie Burke (South Windsor, Conn.) tallied three goals and two assists in the victory. Senior Maggie Bodington (Stratford, Conn.), sophomore Tristan Kijak (Windsor, Conn.), and junior Michelina Pinto (Groton, Conn.) all put away two goals each in the contest. Rounding out scoring for Eastern Conn. State were seniors Allison Wylie (Ellington, Conn.), Jenna Glynn (West Granby), and Amanda Tourjee (Waterford, Conn.) all adding a goal each.

Senior Jenny Gubner (Pleasanton, Calif.) and junior Olivia Strobl (Stafford, Va.) each tallied two goals apiece to lead the Blue. First year Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) scored a goal and scooped up two ground balls in the setback.

Eastern Conn. State got on the board first when Burke netted her first of the game at 26:23. Wellesley answered, scoring back-to-back goals from Gubner at 23:55 and Strobl at 20:59 to take a 2-1 lead. The Warriors fired back at 20:43 when Burke put away her second of the day to tie the game at 2-2. The goal also sparked an eight-goal run to help ECSU hold a 10-2 advantage at the half.

Eastern Conn. State scored the first two goals of the second half from Wylie and Pinto at 26:31 and 23:16 to increase their lead to 12-2. Dennis scored her second of the season at 21:44 on a free-position shot to cut Wellesley's deficit, 12-3. Eastern Conn. State responded, scoring three unanswered goals to extend their lead to 15-3. Strobl and Gubner put away two more for Wellesley, but the Warriors held on to take the 16-5 victory. Eastern Conn. State held the advantage in shots, 28-23 and draw controls, 12-11.

Wellesley junior goalkeeper Chloe Tucker (San Ramon, Calif.) recorded seven saves in the setback and dropped to 0-10 on her season. Eastern Conn. State junior goalkeeper Jessica Purick (Riverhead, NY) earned the win with 12 saves in her 54:50 minutes of play and is now 4-5 in her season. First year Sarah Farag (Holmdel, NJ) saw 5:10 minutes of action to finish the game for the Warriors. 

Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 7. Wellesley will jump back into conference play as they travel to MIT with the draw set for 1:00 pm. Eastern Conn. State will host Mount Holyoke at 4:00 pm.

Blue Tennis Blanks Clark 9-0 to Begin Home Stand

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis earned their second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season with a 9-0 win on Tuesday afternoon against Clark at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. Wellesley improves to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in conference action. Clark is now 2-6 on their season and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley junior, and NEWMAC Athlete of the Week, Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) teamed with sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) to earn the first victory of the day at No. 1 doubles, defeating first year Jillian Skulsky (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Anna Gates (North Scituate, R.I.), 8-1. The Blue would go on to take a 3-0 lead after sweeping through doubles play.

In the No. 2 spot, first years Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) took an 8-0 match against Clark junior Maggie Tarbox (Lebanon, Conn.) and sophomore Chloe Dunnell (Montclair, N.J.). Wellesley junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) and first year Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) then finished the doubles sweep with an 8-0 victory over senior Bichtroan Nguyen (Worcester, Mass.) and first year Elizabeth Tchantouridze (Northfield, Vt.).

Wellesley then powered through singles competition to take the 9-0 win over the Cougars. Huang held the advantage in her match, as she took her sets to 6-0, 6-1 over Gates at No. 1. Peng then edged Skulsky in a 6-2, 6-0 victory, while Kong held her sets to a 6-0, 6-0 advantage over Tarbox at No. 3.

Wellesley sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) earned her first victory of the day with set wins of 6-1, 6-1 over Tchantouridze at No. 4. Ki then defeated Nguyen in two sets at No. 5 and Chu finished the day with a victory against first year Zoe Chakoian (Viroqua, Wis.) at No. 6. Both matches ended with 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Wellesley will host Wheaton on Sunday April 8 at 11:00 AM. Clark will play again on Saturday April 7 at 10:30 AM at MIT.

Win Streak Snapped as Blue Tennis Falls In Tough 5-4 Final at Cerritos

Sophomore Korina Hernandez has now won six straight matches and is 4-0 playing in the No. 4 position in the Wellesley lineup (Gil Talbot).

NORWALK, Calif. – Wellesley College tennis entered Thursday night's match against Cerritos College with a perfect 4-0 record on their California road trip but in the end it was the host Falcons that would extend their own winning streak to 18 straight matches with a 5-4 victory over the Blue. 

Wellesley is now 8-5 overall after going 4-1 in five matches this week in California. Cerritos, a member of the California Community College Athletic Association's South Coast Conference, improves to 20-1 overall and remains unbeaten since February 3rd.

The Falcons jumped ahead in doubles play, taking a 2-1 lead thanks to victories at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 2, Petra Such and Moa Lindström defeated Wellesley Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Calif.) and first year Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), 8-3, to open the match. The Falcons then earned a crucial 8-6 victory in a tight No. 1 doubles match that saw Lisa Suzuki and Kseniia Prokopchuk top Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan).

Wellesley would get on the board at No. 3 doubles, where first years Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) and Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) would down Itzi Torres and Diviana Bravo, 8-6, to pick up a point for the Blue.

The Blue dropped into a 3-1 hole to start singles, as Prokopchuk topped Kong, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3, but Huang and Chu would rally in the next two matches to go final, tying the match 3-3 with victories at No. 1 and No. 6. Huang defeated Suzuki, 6-3, 6-3, and Chu defeated Bravo, 6-4, 6-1. Cerritos took the upper hand in the next two matches to clinch the victory, earning a pair of wins after the No. 2 and No. 5 matches ended at nearly the same time. At No. 2, Such topped Peng in a three-set decision, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0, while Torres took down junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.), 6-1, 6-4, to clinch the match.

Wellesley would get one back in the final match of the evening, where Hernandez outlasted Lindström in three, 2-6, 6-4, 10-6, to make the final score 5-4. Hernandez has now won six straight matches and is 4-0 playing in the No. 4 position in the Wellesley lineup.

The Blue return home and to the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season on Tuesday, April 3 with a 4:30 PM match versus Clark.

Blue Softball Splits With Emerson To Open NEWMAC Campaign

BOSTON, Mass. – Wellesley College softball roared to a 9-5 victory in game one before host Emerson College put-up six runs in the sixth inning to erase a 4-1 deficit and win game two, 7-4, in the first day of New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play for both teams on Friday at Rotch Field. Wellesley is now 4-7 overall (1-1 NEWMAC), while Emerson moves to 12-4 (2-2 NEWMAC).

Wellesley 9, Emerson 5 

Senior Amanda Manning (Chico, Calif.) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Blue to a 9-5 victory in game one.

First year Gen Brittingham (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) also added three hits and a pair of doubles, while starter Julia Warner (Kenmore, Wash.) recorded three hits and an RBI and struck out three in seven innings to earn her third win of the season.

Lindsey Lowe (Porter Ranch, Calif.) was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored for Emerson, while first year Maddie Tomich (Lithia, Fla.) hit her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the circle, Neely Eddleston (West Wareham, Mass.) pitched 5.1 innings, giving-up four earned runs on eight hits. Casey Tsamis (Colchester, Conn.) took the loss, as she was charged with five earned over 1.2 innings in relief. 

Trailing 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning, Wellesley took control of the game, scoring four runs on six hits to take a 7-5 lead. Sophomore Jessica Budz (Traverse City, Mich.) started the rally with her second single of the day, setting off a chain of four straight Wellesley hits that included a double from classmate Autumn Brown (Marshfield, Mass.), an RBI single from Warner and an RBI double from Manning. 

The Blue added two more runs later in the inning, with Warner scoring on a sacrifice fly from Kendall Smith (Turlock, Calif.) and Manning coming around to score on an RBI double to right from Brittingham. Wellesley would also added two in the seventh, scoring both runs with two outs as Manning dropped down her second double of the day to score Warner and Kim singled to drive in Manning. 

Emerson 7, Wellesley 4

Jacqueline DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Jillian Gearin (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) both homered as part of a six-run sixth inning to help Emerson earn the split with a 7-4 victory in game two.

DeFusco finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in game two. Lowe added three more hits for the Lions, who got 3.2 innings of one-run relief from Eddleston after starter Erin Nolan (Hunterdon, N.J.) was chased from the game after surrendering three runs over the first 3.1 innings. 

Brittingham hit her first career home run in the top of the fourth, Manning recorded her second triple in her last four games and Smith unleashed her fifth double of the year, but the Blue managed just four hits in game two. Senior Madeline Bianchi (Lakeville, Minn.) struck out six, but she was charged with six of the seven Emerson runs in 5.1 innings and is now 0-2 on the season. 

Emerson junior Alena Jones (Woodinville, Wash.) opened the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Emerson would hold the lead until the fourth, when Brittingham put the ball over the left centerfield fence after Smith opened the inning with a walk. The Blue would go on to load the bases but could only push one more run across when sophomore Kalei Oliver (Vista, Calif.) worked a walk to make the score 3-1 later in the inning. 

Manning tripled with two-out and Warner at first in the top of the sixth to give the Blue a 4-1 lead. However, the Wellesley advantage would disappear in the bottom half as Gearin and DeFusco both hit two run homers and the Lions scored two runs on an error to take the 7-4 victory. 

Blue Softball Caps Florida Trip with 5-1 Setback To Wis. –Stevens Point

Wellesley ends their annual trip to Florida with a 3-6 overall record (Julia Monaco).

CLERMONT, Fla. – First year Gen Brittingham (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning but it wasn't enough to rally Wellesley College softball from an early 5-0 deficit, as the Blue fell to the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, 5-1, in their final game at the PFX Athletics Spring Games at the Legends Way Ballfields.

Wellesley will return home with a 3-6 overall record following nine games in the Sunshine State. Wis. – Stevens Point (UWSP) is now 10-9 on the season.

Brittingham finished the contest 2-for-3 and now has a team-high 11 hits and five RBIs through nine games. Classmate Amanda Kim (Neshanic Station, N.J.) also added a pair of hits to raise her on base percentage to .400 on the season. Kim also scored on Brittingham's RBI single. 

In the circle, senior Julia Warner (Kenmore, Wash.) was charged with the loss after allowing all five runs on seven hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. Junior Sydney Hopper (Newcastle, Wash.) made her second straight scoreless relief appearance, surrendering just one hit over 3.1 innings. 

UWSP started the scoring in the second inning as a pair of two-out singles from first year Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis.) and senior Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill.) helped the Pointers to a 2-0 lead. Wakefield scored senior Sydeny Opdhal (Greenfield, Wis.) from third before coming around to score when Allen singled up the middle one batter later. 

The Pointers added three more runs in the fourth inning, as Warner ran into trouble early in the inning, loading the bases with a pair of walks and a single. UWSP junior Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis.) then delivered the big blast, lifting a bases-clearing RBI double to left field to make the score 5-0 and end the day for Warner.

The Blue got one back on Brittingham's RBI single in the sixth, as Kim singled to open the inning and stole second, before Brittingham drove her in. First year Julianne Griffin (Blue Bell, Pa.) then singled to give the Blue two aboard, but Wellesley was unable to add to their total.

Blue Lacrosse Picks Up NEWMAC Win Over Emerson, 10-6

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Junior Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) scored four goals to help Wellesley College lacrosse secure a 10-6 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over visiting Emerson College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue currently occupy the sixth spot in the NEWMAC standings after improving to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Emerson, currently tied for fourth in the conference standings, moves to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC. The top six teams advance to the NEWMAC postseason at the end of the regular season.

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Visiting WPI put up eight runs in back-to-back games to sweep Wellesley College softball in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers took game one 8-0, in five innings, and game two 8-3.

The Engineers improve to 25-5 with their fourth win in a row and their 14th in their last 15 games. WPI is also now 13-1 in the NEWMAC. Wellesley dips back below .500 following today's action, at 12-14 overall and 6-8 in conference.

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton junior Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I.) hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to send host Wheaton College to a doubleheader sweep of Wellesley College softball in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Friday afternoon. The Lyons won game one in five innings, 13-5, before Bouthillette secured an 8-7 Wheaton win in game two.

Wheaton improves to 15-9 overall and 9-3 in conference action while the Blue move to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in NEWMAC play.

Game Two Rally Helps Blue Softball To Doubleheader Sweep At Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. – Wellesley College softball scored a 9-0 victory in five innings in game one, before rallying for an 8-7 victory in game two of a non-conference doubleheader with Endicott College on Wednesday afternoon. Wellesley improves to 12-10 overall following the team's fourth-straight victory. The Gulls drop to an even 10-10 on the season.

Six different Wellesley players recorded at least one hit to help the Blue to a 9-0 rout of Endicott in game one. Wellesley starter Julia Warner (Kenmore, Wash.) finished the contest with a career-high 10 strikeouts, surrendering just three hits to improve to 3-4 on the season.

Blue Golf Wraps Up Play at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Wellesley College golf wrapped up play on day two of this weekend's 2016 Vassar Invitational at the Casperkill Golf Club.  Wellesley shaved four strokes off the team's round one score but remained in tenth place with a team score of 748 at the conclusion of play at the 5,852 yard, Par 72 course.
Williams College, led by individual champion Phoebe Mattana (Demarest, NJ) took home the team championship with a score of 627. The 12-team tournament also included squads from host Vassar College, Amherst College, Middlebury, SUNY Cortland, Saint Lawrence University, Ithaca College, Union College (NY), Mount Holyoke College, Hamilton College, and William Smith College.

The Blue recorded a final round 372 after putting up a score of 376 on Saturday. First-year Amy (Zilin) Jin (Shenzhen, China) and junior Lei Wei (Brentwood, Calif.) recorded the low scores of the weekend for Wellesley, finishing at 174 and 182, respectively.  Both Jin and Wei improved by four strokes from their day one totals.

Williams and Amherst finished with the top five golfers for the tournament; with Williams golfers securing the team win with first, second, and fifth-placed individual finishes.

Wellesley golf will continue the spring season next weekend at the two-day Jack Leaman Invitational, hosted by Amherst College.

Wellesley Softball Picks Up Pair of NEWMAC Wins Versus Clark

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Amanda Manning (Durham, Calif.) hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Wellesley College softball complete a sweep of visiting Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Sunday afternoon. The Blue captured game one 11-2, in five innings, before taking a 3-2 win in game two of the doubleheader that was originally scheduled for April 2.

Wellesley moves to 10-10 overall, snapping a four-game skid in conference play to improve to 6-4 in the NEWMAC. Clark is now 9-19 on the season and 1-9 in the NEWMAC.

Blue Softball Swept By Babson in NEWMAC Home Opener

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Visiting Babson College swept to a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball victories over host Wellesley College on Friday afternoon at the Wellesley Outdoor Fields Complex. The Beavers rallied for a 5-2 win in game one before defeating the Blue 10-5 in the nightcap.

Babson improves 12-8 on the season and 3-3 in conference play, dealing the Blue their first conference setbacks of the year to drop Wellesley to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC.

Blue Crew Opens Spring Season Versus Top-Ranked Bates, Tufts, Wesleyan

MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 3 ranked Wellesley College crew team opened the spring racing season on Saturday afternoon on the Malden River, squaring off with three of the top-ten teams in the nation in No. 1 Bates, No. 5 Wesleyan and No. 7 Tufts.

The four squads matched up in a series of dual races throughout the morning, contesting with only a moderate headwind as temperatures reached the mid-40s by the end of competition.

The Blue's Varsity Eight posted the second fastest time of the day (06:51.2) in their opening match-up with Wesleyan, but the Cardinals soared to a mark of 6:46.7 to relegate the Blue to the Petite Final. In the Petite Final, the Blue's Varsity Eight (06:56.8) defeated Tufts (07:07.8). Defending national champion Bates (06:53.0) won the Varsity Eight Grand Final over Wesleyan (07:04.1).

Blue Softball Defeated by Scranton, Oswego St. on Day Three in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Wellesley College softball came up short in a comeback bid against the University of Scranton, 4-2, before dropping a 9-6 final in a tough third day of action at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida. Wellesley is now 2-4 on the season.

Scranton scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on for the remainder of the contest to take a 4-2 victory over the Blue. Senior Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa.) pitched a complete game to earn her first win of the season, scattering seven hits over seven inning and striking out six in seven innings.

Blue Tennis Concludes Three-Day Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Wellesley College tennis had a busy weekend at the annual Bowdoin Invitational, as members of the Blue matched up with players from Skidmore College, Tufts University, Bates College and host Bowdoin College in a three-day round robin style event. 

On Friday, the Blue went a combined 1-7 in singles play and 1-6 in doubles play before rebounding to go 7-3 in singles and 7-5 overall on Saturday. Wellesley then wrapped up the weekend by going a combined 3-3 on Sunday. Complete Wellesley results can be found below.  

The Blue will return home to host Springfield College in the Quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament on Wednesday, October 21, at 5:00 PM. No. 11 Field Hockey Grabs 3-1 NEWMAC Win at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – No. 11 Wellesley College field hockey scored three unanswered goals to defeat Springfield College, 3-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The Blue improve to 5-1 in conference play and 11-2 overall following their third consecutive victory, while the Pride slide to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.

Springfield outshot the Blue 3-0 in the opening 10 minutes of play, capping the early flurry with a goal from sophomore Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) at 9:34. Senior Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) added the assist on the play, as Sweet recorded her third marker of the year.

The Blue turned the tide after the slow start, answering back at 18:59 when seniorHannah Flesch (Rockville, Md.) used an assist from first year Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.) to beat Springfield goalkeeper Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.).

Villa made four saves in the contest for Springfield. Wellesley goalkeeper Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass) turned away three shots to record her twelfth win of the season.

The Blue took the lead for good just before halftime when junior Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) found the back of the cage for the fifth time this season, thanks to an assist from first year Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.).

Huang would add her second assist of the day in the second half, as senior Anissa Sridhar (London, Ontario) scored her team-leading tenth goal of the season at 58:49 to close out the scoring in the contest and give Wellesley the 3-1 win.

Wellesley finished the contest with a 17-7 advantage in shots and a commanding 14-4 edge in penalty corners.

Next up, the Blue return home on Tuesday, October 20, for a key NEWMAC matchup with MIT at 4:00 PM. Springfield will be in action later in the day on Tuesday, as they are set to travel to Clark for a 7:00 PM start.

Chalmers Nets Game-Winner in 2OT as Blue Soccer Tops WPI, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Erica Chalmers (Natick, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie in the second overtime to give Wellesley College soccer a 1-0 victory over WPI on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, Wellesley's first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season, the Blue improve to 6-5-2 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play. WPI is now 9-4-1 overall, suffering just their second NEWMAC loss to drop to 3-2-1 in conference.

Chalmers' second goal of the season snuck past WPI junior goalkeeper Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) at 107:44, as the Blue snapped a five-game winless streak with the golden goal victory.

Wellesley senior goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) helped keep the Blue in the contest, making seven saves to record her sixth win and shutout of the year.

The Engineers finished the game with an 18-3 edge in shots, while topping the Blue by a 7-2 margin in shots on goal. Goldsmith's counterpart, junior Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, N.Y.), made a pair of saves for the Engineers.

Both teams continue NEWMAC play Tuesday, October 20, as the Engineers travel to Smith at 4:00 PM and Wellesley returns to Worcester to face Clark at 6:30 PM.

No. 11 Field Hockey Tops No. 16 Tufts, 1-0, on Late Goal from Peterson

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Junior Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored the only goal of the game with 6:56 left in regulation as No. 11 Wellesley College field hockey edged out No. 16 Tufts University in non-conference play on Thursday at the Wellesley College Athletics Fields Complex.
Wellesley improves to 11-2 on the season, snapping a seven game losing streak to Tufts by earning the program's first win over the Jumbos since the Blue took a 3-2 win in overtime on September 12, 2007. Tufts drops to 8-4 overall.

Wellesley capitalized on the last of four penalty corner opportunities, as Peterson scored her eighth of the season on assist from Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.). The ball briefly made its way outside the circle before the Blue corralled it back toward Hwang. The first year forward then shoveled the ball toward Peterson who deposited it on the right post.

Peterson's goal was the only blemish on the day for Tufts' first year goalkeeper Emily Polinski (East Brunswick, N.J.), as she made a pair of saves.

Wellesley junior goalkeeper Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) made four saves to record the shutout, including an outstanding kick save midway through the second half on rip from the top of the circle by Tufts senior Dakota Sikes-Keilp (Montclair, N.J.).

The Jumbos finished with an 8-4 advantage in corners and a 6-5 advantage in shots but in the end it was the Blue that came out with the 1-0 win in a tightly contested contest.

Wellesley will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Springfield on Saturday, October 17, at 1:00 PM. Tufts will play at Bates on Saturday at 12:00 PM.

MIT Downs Blue Soccer, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – MIT first year Allie Hrabchak (Princeton, N.J.) scored the game's only goal at 42:18 of the first half, as the visiting Engineers took a 1-0 victory over Wellesley College soccer in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday afternoon.
Hrabchak broke a first half deadlock in the 43rd minute after being denied on her previous three attempts on goal, including a fall extension save from Wellesley senior goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) less than 30 seconds prior.

Following Goldsmith's initial save, Wellesley briefly cleared the ball before it made its way back to Hrabchak near the top of the penalty area. Hrabchak then took a step toward the middle of the field before cutting the ball back to beat the Wellesley defense and subsequently Goldsmith.

Hrabchak's team-leading eighth of the season would prove to be the only goal of the game, despite the Engineer's outshooting the Blue by a 14-7 margin in the contest.

Goldsmith made eight saves for Wellesley, getting some help from junior Gabby Hartman (La Jolla, Calif.) when the defender saved a header on the goal line following one of the Engineer's seven corner kick opportunities. MIT ended the game with a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

MIT junior goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J.) added four saves to earn her eighth win of the year while recording her third shutout of the season.

Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Saturday, October 17. Wellesley will play at WPI at 1:00 PM. MIT will also play on the road, when they travel to Smith for a 2:00 PM contest.

Blue Golf Takes Ninth at Williams Fall Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Wellesley College golf team wrapped up play at this weekend's  Williams Fall Invitational on Sunday. The Blue shot a combined 361 following their 360 effort on Saturday to finish in ninth place out of 15 teams at the two-day event at the par-71, 5,819-yard Taconic Golf Club. 

Williams College took home first at their own event, with NYU in second, and Middlebury in third. The Ephs were paced by overall winner Cordelia Chan, as she finished with a total of score of 151, nine strokes over par. 

Sophomore Maya Muldowney (Waunakee, Wis.) delivered the top performance for Wellesley, shooting a day-two 99 after carding an 80 on the opening day to finsih in a tie for 37th with a score of 175. First-year Annika Vandayar (Garnet Valley, Pa.) finished just behind Muldowney, taking 39th with a score of 176 (89, 87). 

First years Amy (Zilin) Jin (Shenzhen,China) and Katie Lee (Portland, Ore.) each tied for 61st place with matching scores of 189 on the weekend.

Rounding out the field for the Blue, senior Lei Wei (Brentwood, Calif.) finished with a weekend total of 194 to tie for 66th place, while sophomore Kathleena Inchoco (Fairfield, Conn.) added a 211 to take 78th place.  

Wellesley will close out the fall schedule next weekend, October 17 and 18, by hosting the annual Ann S. Batchelder Invitational on campus at Nehoiden Golf Course.
