Prior to the walk-off in game two, the Engineers bested the Pride 1-0 in the first contest for the sweep. With the two wins, MIT stretches its win streak to 13 games which ties the program record that was set back in 1984.
Game One: MIT 1, Springfield 0
In a pitchers dual, MIT senior Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) tossed a complete game
shutout (10-4) allowing just two hits, one walk alongside 15 strikeouts. Springfield sophomore Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) shouldered the loss (5-5) as she gave up one run (earned), three hits, one walk and two punch outs.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when MIT pushed across the only run of the game. Junior Ali Trueworthy (Rochester, N.H.) opened the frame with a single down the left field line and advanced into scoring position on a fielder's choice by Joseph. Sophomore Amanda Lee (Saratoga, Calif.) then lined an RBI single to left plating Trueworthy for the 1-0 advantage.
After the run was scored, Marshall notched a 1-2-3 sixth and retired the first two batters of the seventh before Springfield got the tying run on base. Pride pinch hitter Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) drew a walk, but Marshall struck out junior Jordyn Moquin (Plantsville, Conn.), her 15th of the game, sealing the 1-0 win for MIT.
Game Two: MIT 4, Springfield 3
With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, MIT put together a two-out rally to win 4-3 and walk-off with the two game sweep of Springfield.
Marshall, who came on in relief in the fourth earned the win (11-4) allowing just two hits, three walks to go along with seven strikeouts. The senior combined for 22 strikeouts over her 11 innings of work in the doubleheader. Moquin took the loss (2-2) on 2 2/3 innings of relief pitching, two hits and one run (unearned).
The Pride got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI single by E. Joseph, but MIT answered quickly in the bottom half of the frame when J. Joseph ran home on a dropped third strike. Trailing 3-1 in the third, Engineers' sophomore Zoe Hinton (Aurora, Colo.) drilled a two-run single down the left field line, pushing the game even once again at 3-3.
Joseph drilled a triple off the top of the wall before scoring on a fielding error by the third baseman during M. Shifflet's at-bat, ending the game with the score 4-3 in favor of MIT.
MIT (17-5, 10-0 NEWMAC) steps away from conference play for a doubleheader against defending national champion Tufts University on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m., while Springfield (13-9, 6-4 NEWMAC) hosts Skidmore College for an out of league doubleheader the same day beginning at 3:30 p.m.
