ITHACA, N.Y. – The Harvard men's lacrosse team used a second-half surge to knock off Cornell Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field, 12-8.
Harvard (6-5, 2-1 Ivy League) held a slight 4-3 edge at halftime but outscored Cornell (4-5, 1-3 Ivy League) 8-5 in the second half to pull away for the win. The Crimson now sits in third place of the Ivy League with three regular season games remaining, with the top four teams from the conference's regular season earning a berth into the Ivy League Tournament.
Will Walker (3g) turned in his second hat trick of the season to lead the offensive attack as Devin
Dwyer contributed two goals and two assists. Dwyer's four points extended his point-scoring streak to 44games, the fifth-longest active streak in the country, and moved his career-high point total to 54 (30g, 24a) on the season.
Ian Ardrey (2g) and Joe Lang (2g) also scored twice apiece, with Morgan Cheek (1g, 2a), Sean Mahon (1g), and Sean McDonagh (1g, 1a) also getting in on the action.
Robert Shaw turned aside 17 shots to earn the victory in goal, marking his eighth game this season with at least 10 saves and his third game of at least 15 saves. Bobby Duvnjak, the NCAA's leader in caused turnovers per game entering the day, came away with three caused turnovers and four ground balls to assist in the defensive third, and added his fourth assist of the season at the offensive end. Jack Breit led the team with five ground balls.
Harvard remains on the road next weekend as it travels to Penn for a 3 p.m. showdown live on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network.
Shaw was tested early and often as Cornell attempted 25 shots before the intermission, but the sophomore stood his ground and made nine saves to help the Crimson to a 4-3 edge at the break. Walker scored Harvard's first two goals to give the visitors a 2-1 lead, with Ardrey and McDonagh teaming up for the other two strikes.
The offenses came alive in the third quarter as the teams combined for seven goals through the first 7:44 of play. Back-to-back goals by Dwyer and Walker move Harvard in front 6-4, but Cornell rallied to take its only lead of the day with three straight tallies, 7-6. Lang and Dwyer answered to put the Crimson back on top before the period expired, 8-7, and following two more goals from Lang and Mahon Harvard held a 10-7 margin with 6:15 to play.
Shaw held off any hope of a Big Red comeback with eight fourth-quarter saves, and Cheek and Ardrey put the finishing touches on the victory to give Harvard the final 12-8 margin.
