GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 11, Hamilton 2 (five innings)
- Amherst drew nine walks and cracked 10 hits en route to 11 runs to help seal the opening game of the twinbill.
- Both teams were scoreless in the first inning before Amherst got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second. The Purple & White took advantage of four walks, two hit-by-pitches and two hits to score six runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead before plating two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.
- Hamilton remained scoreless for four innings before scoring their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth.
- Junior Lauren Tuiskula led off the second inning with a single followed by an Annie Murphy '19 single. Annie Apffel '17 then walked to load the bases before senior Ashleigh Rutherford scored Tuiskula for the first run of the game. First-year Sammy Salustri later notched a two-out RBI single to score classmate Murphy.
- In the top of the third, Brianna Cook '16 and Alena Marovitz '17 both walked before Tuiskula was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Murphy delivered her second single of the game to score Cook, and Apffel's sacrifice fly scored Marovitz. An illegal pitch by Hamilton then allowed Murphy to touch home plate. With the bases loaded once more, Salustri drove in a pair of runners with a double to make it 8-0.
- The Purple & White scored three more times in the final two innings before the Continentals led off the bottom of the fifth with a single by pinch hitter Caroline Chivily. Ashleah Yzaguirre was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, before Liz Brautiga connected on a base hit to score Chivily, and Hamilton scored its second run on a miscue by the Purple & White setting the final score of the game at 11-2 with the run-rule in effect.
- Jackie Beuchler '17 improved her record to 2-0 in the circle allowing no runs on just two hits.
- The top of the Amherst first frame was highlighted by three singles and a run scored by Salustri on passed ball to give the Purple & White an early 1-0 edge.
- Hamilton held Amherst scoreless in the second and third innings but plated three runs themselves to take their first lead in the series. The Continentals used a hit-by-pitch , an Amherst error, and a single in the bottom of the second to score two runs. In the bottom of the third, Hamilton plated another run to lift its advantage to 3-1.
- The Purple & White tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on a Julia Turner sacrifice fly that scored Apffel and allowed Rutherford to score on an error on the same play.
- Hamilton answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, before forging ahead in the bottom of the fifth, as the four-run stanza was highlighted by a Delaney Nichols home run to set the secore at 9-3.
- Amherst cut the deficit to four scoring two runs in the sixth but couldn't plate another run as Hamilton crossed the dish in the home half of the sixth inning to set the final score at 10-5.
- Gina Pagan was credited with the loss in the circle bringing her record to 3-3.
- Tuiskula paced the Purple & White's offense in game one going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and added an RBI. Salustri was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Nicolette Miranda '16 walked twice for Amherst and added a two-run single.
- Tuiskula and Salustri stayed hot for Amherst as they paved the way in game two at the plate. Tuiskula was 2-for-3, while Salustri was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- The Purple & White logged 10 hits in the victory.
- Amherst travels to Smith College Wednesday, April 13 for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 3:30 p.m. followed by game two at 5:30 p.m.
