No. 25/19 Amherst Blanks Middlebury, 5-0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The No. 25/19 Amherst College baseball team registered its third shutout of the season Friday afternoon, blanking Middlebury College, 5-0 in NESCAC West play at Forbes Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Taking the batters box in the leadoff position, junior Anthony Spina tripled to right center as the ball deflected off the glove of the diving center fielder before Sam Ellinwood '18 notched a single up the middle to send Spina home a batter later.
  • Ariel Kenney '18 doubled the Purple & White's lead an inning later. With a runner on first after a Harry Roberson '18 single to right field, Kenney sent a ground rule double to left center to score Roberson.
  • Roberson would help Amherst tack on two more runs in the sixth to make it a 4-0 contest, sending a double to right center to score Max Steinhorn '18 and Ellinwood. 
  • The Purple & White plated their final run of the game in the ninth, as Spina singled to the shortstop to plate Kenney.
  • The Panthers offense recorded six hits, with Brendan Donohue finishing a perfect 3-for-3. Garrett Werner went 2-for-4 in the game, while John Luke tallied Middlebury's final hit to go 1-for-4.
  • Roberson paced the Amherst offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run, while Kenney finished 3-for-5 with a run and RBI. Spina also put up three hits for the Purple & White, going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
  • Jackson Volle '17 (6-0) earned the win in a complete game effort, allowing no runs and six hits while fanning three.
  • Colby Morris (2-3) took the loss for the Panthers, allowing five runs and 15 hits while striking out three and walking one in nine innings on the mound.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Amherst held a 15-6 edge in hits in the matchup. 
  • Amherst left 12 runners on base, while Middlebury stranded 5.
