MIT Men’s Tennis Locks Up Top Seed In NEWMAC With 9-0 Win Over Emerson

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With a 9-0 sweep of Emerson College on Wednesday afternoon, the MIT men's tennis team secured the top seed in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament. Wednesday's match was contested at the duPont Tennis Courts on the campus of MIT, with Emerson as the home team.

The Engineers finished their NEWMAC schedule as the regular season champions for the 17th time in the 18 year history of the conference. Over the 17 previous years, MIT has won each of the league postseason tournaments, and will be looking for its 18th next weekend.

MIT started off play Wednesday afternoon by taking an early 3-0 lead in double play. All three
pairings won by the same set score of 8-1. Freshman Alex Cauneac (Severna Park, Md.) and sophomore Bryan Lilley (Edmond, Okla.) teamed up at No. 1 doubles, while senior Kevin Wang (Havertown, Pa.) and freshman Sean Ko (Danville, Calif.) played at the No. 2 position and  junior Avi Walden (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and freshman Tyler Barr (Auburn Township, Ohio) held strong in the No. 3 slot.

As a duo, Cauneac and Lilley improved to 10-2 overall and 3-1 as the No. 2 doubles team this season, while the other two teams from MIT played together for the first time this season as their marks moved to 1-0.

The Cardinal and Gray didn't let up a single point this afternoon as the Engineers took all six singles matches in straight sets. Senior Robbie Shaw (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore Omar Gonzalez (San Juan, Texas) and senior Justin Cheung (Sydney, Australia) all earned their first victories of the year in singles play today. Cheung took a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 4, Shaw won by a 6-1, 6-1 mark at No. 5 and Gonzalez sealed the sweep 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. In the top three positions for MIT, senior Jeffrey Bu (Arcadia, Calif.) was the only one to not give up a set winning by a 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 3 junior Kenny Gea (Irvine, Calif.) at No. 1 singles and freshman Henry La Soya (Los Angeles, Calif.) at No. 2 singles rounded out the list of winners as they won by scores of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-3, respectively.
