The win moves the Lyons to .500 on the season with a 5-5 record, while earning them their first conference win of the year (1-1 NEWMAC). Wheaton is currently a perfect 4-0 at home. The Lions fall to 0-9 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Will Morrison netted a season and game-high four goals for Wheaton, while Kyle Rumberger, Josh
Talanian, and TJ Bobinsky all earned hat tricks. The Lyons also had four players finish with two goals and four other players finish with a single goal.
Rumberger added a game-high three assists to go with his three goals, while also picking up four groundballs. Eric Jansen led the Lyons with a team-high eight groundballs. Morrison and Zachary Brode each picked up three.
Diego Rosende led Emerson with a goal and an assist, while Jack Bushell netted the teams other goal. Fernando Gutierrez led all players with 16 groundballs for the Lions.
Joseph Mitchell earned his first win of the season for Wheaton, playing 41 minutes in goal, coming up with five saves on seven shots faced. Nico Falla and Alec Uyeki also saw time in goal.
Wheaton edged out Emerson in groundballs 55-34, while also having a 64-20 advantage in shots. Wheaton successfully completed 14-of-16 its clear attempts, while Emerson went 10-of-18.
Wheaton ended the first quarter with an 11-0 lead with Morrison scoring all four of his goals in the frame. The Lyons added three more goals to their lead before Rosende found goal with a man-up situation to make it a 14-1 contest. Brian Teague and Talanian netted goals to conclude the first half in Wheaton's favor.
Rumberger and Griffin Phaneuf started the third frame with back-to-back goals for Wheaton. Emerson earned one back at the 6:05 mark, before two more Wheaton shots made their way into net.
The Lyons closed out the fourth quarter with five additional goals.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, April 16 at 4 p.m. on Nordin Field for a NEWMAC contest against the Coast Guard Academy.
