CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Holding Brown scoreless for the first 54:17 of the game, the Harvard women's lacrosse team held off the Bears, 8-2, Saturday afternoon at Harvard Stadium.
Harvard advances to 7-3, 3-1 in the Ivy League, with the win, while Brown drops to 4-6, 0-4 in the Ivy League.
The two goals allowed marked the fewest the Crimson has surrendered to an Ivy League opponent since a 7-2 victory at Penn on March 19, 1994.
Alexis Nicolia paced the Crimson with three goals, while Julia Glynn netted one goal and assisted on
two others. Maeve McMahon and Audrey Todd both added two goals apiece, and Kelly Weis earned her seventh victory of the season as she made seven saves, all in the first half. Brown outshot Harvard, 19-18, but Harvard held the Bears to only two shots on goal in the second stanza. Victoria Holland recorded five saves for the Bears.
Audrey Todd opened the scoring at 25:35 for the Crimson off a feed from Glynn before both teams settled in defensively. Weis's seven first half saves held Brown in check. A goal with only five seconds remaining in the half by Glynn sent Harvard into the break leading, 2-0.
In the second, Nicolia netted back-to-back Harvard goals at 15:21 and 11:40 to extend the Crimson lead to 4-0. Jillian Lee put Brown on the board, 4-1, at 5:43 beginning a scoring flurry for both teams. Four Harvard shots and one additional Brown shot found the back of the net, as the Crimson cruised to an 8-2 win.
Todd notched her second of the game at 5:03, and in the final minutes, McMahon netted goals at 3:14 and 1:41, while Nicola capped her hat trick at 2:12.
With her two points, Romeo moves to a tie for 11th-place in program history with 138 career points, knotting Jen White '83.
Up next, the Crimson will travel to Philadelphia to take on No. 15 Penn in a crucial Ivy League contest Saturday, April 16 at noon. The game will be shown live on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network.
