WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Erica Chalmers
(Natick, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie in the second overtime to give
Wellesley College soccer a 1-0 victory over WPI on Saturday afternoon at
Alumni Stadium.
With the win, Wellesley's first New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season, the Blue improve to
6-5-2 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play. WPI is now 9-4-1 overall,
suffering just their second NEWMAC loss to drop to 3-2-1 in conference.
Chalmers' second goal of the season snuck past WPI junior goalkeeper
Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) at 107:44, as the Blue snapped a
five-game winless streak with the golden goal victory.
Wellesley senior goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) helped keep the Blue in the contest, making seven saves to record her sixth win and shutout of the year.
The Engineers finished the game with an 18-3 edge in shots, while
topping the Blue by a 7-2 margin in shots on goal. Goldsmith's
counterpart, junior Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, N.Y.), made a pair of
saves for the Engineers.
Both teams continue NEWMAC play Tuesday, October 20, as the Engineers
travel to Smith at 4:00 PM and Wellesley returns to Worcester to face
Clark at 6:30 PM.
