Simmons College Lacrosse Falls at Mount Ida, 10-7

NEWTON, Mass. -- Senior attacker Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored four goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team in a 10-7 loss to host Mount Ida College this evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Alumni Field in Newton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Mustangs win their eighth straight game and improve to 9-1 and a perfect 5-0 in GNAC action.

Simmons owned a 32-23 shot advantage, but Mount Ida senior goalie Eleanor Garvey (Eldridge, Md.) was outstanding in net for the home team, stopping 17 shots. The Sharks also held a 28-18 margin on ground balls and forced the Mustangs into 23 turnovers to their own total of 18, but Mount Ida found a way to come out on top at the end.

Fries scored four goals for the third straight game to give her four or more scores in a match six times this season for Simmons. She also added two ground ball and caused a pair of turnovers, while sophomore midfielder Amina Mansouri (Revere, Mass.) tied her career best with two goals for the second game in a row to go with a personal and game-high six ground balls in addition to a caused turnover. Junior midfielder Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) contributed with a goal, five ground balls, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. First year goalie Cat Cross (Beverly, Mass.) made eight saves.

Junior midfielder Brooke Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.) led Mount Ida with five points on four goals and an assist and added a game-high nine draw controls and a caused turnover, while junior middle Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) netted three goals in addition to an assist, two ground balls, a pair of draw controls and a caused turnover. First year attacker Jordyn Ringuette (Colchester, Conn.) chipped in with two goals, an assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Garvey added five ground balls to her save total for the Mustangs.

Cottam pulled the Sharks even at 5-5 with her 23rd goal of the season with 19:54 left to play in the second half. Mount Ida answered with three straight goals as part of a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead with 2:56 remaining in the contest. Ringuette, Kelly and Scahill each scored a goal in a span of five minutes to give the Mustangs an 8-5 margin with 9:35 showing in the second half. Fries halted the home team's scoring string with her third tally of the night to cut the deficit to 8-6 for Simmons at 6:49 of the period. Scahill scored just 29 seconds later to defuse any momentum the Sharks had mustered and senior midfielder Emily McConnell (Dracut, Mass.) gave Mount Ida a 10-6 lead with her 18th marker of the year on a free position shot at the 2:56 mark. Fries netted her 34th goal of the season for the night's last score to make it 10-7 with 93 seconds to go in the match.

The Mustangs got on the board first when Scahill scored with 23:34 to play in the opening half, but the Simmons defense held Mount Ida scoreless over the next 15-plus minutes, while the offense found the back of the net three times to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. Fries scored two of the goals, before Mansouri scored with 11:32 showing on the first half clock. The Mustangs made up for lost time, putting together three scoring strikes in a span of 62 seconds to take a 4-3 edge with 7:14 left in the half. Ringuette, Scahill and Kelly provided the push for Mount Ida, before it took it's one-goal lead into the intermission.

Mansouri and Kelly traded goals to open the second stanza, before Cottam tied the match at 5-5.

Simmons returns to Newton on Saturday, April 7 when it takes on GNAC foe Lasell College at 1:00 p.m., while the Mustangs head to West Hartford, Conn. on April 10 to play conference rival University of Saint Joseph at 7:00 p.m.

Del Vacchio Leads Softball to Sweep over Union (N.Y.), 8-0, 6-3

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore second base Lauren Del Vacchio (Murrieta, Calif.) was 3-6 with a home run a double and three runs batted in to lead the Simmons College softball team to a sweep today over visiting Union College (N.Y.), winning the opener, 8-0, and the nightcap, 6-3, at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks win their fourth straight to improve to 7-9 on the season, while the Dutchwomen fall to 2-10. 

Del Vacchio also scored three times and drew a walk for Simmons, while first year first base Hailey Yabroudy (Amherst, N.H.) went 3-5 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore third base Dom Ortiz (Lawrence, Mass.) was 3-4 with two RBI and added a walk, while first year left fielder Ivy Vann (Bend, Ore.) was 2-6 with a run batted in and a walk.

Simmons Lacrosse Falls at Saint Joseph's (Maine), 16-9

STANDISH, Maine – Junior midfielder Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) netted four goals and added an assist to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team in a 16-9 loss to host Saint Joseph's College (Maine) this afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener at the Saint Joseph's College Athletic Complex in Standish, Maine. The Sharks fall to 4-2 overall, including 0-1 in league play, while the Monks improve to 5-1 and 1-0. 

The match consisted of two big scoring runs from Saint Joseph's bookended around a scoring flourish from Simmons with the Monks coming out on top. Saint Joseph's took advantage of a 40-21 shot margin and forced the Sharks into 20 turnovers, while committing 10 itself. 

Bragg added three ground balls and a pair of draw controls to her afternoon for Simmons, while junior midfielder Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) netted a trio of goals, won five draws and caused a pair of turnovers. Junior attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) and senior attacker Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) each tallied a goal with Maiewski also picking up a ground ball. First year goalie Cat Cross (Beverly, Mass.) registered a career-high 21 saves between the pipes for the Sharks. 

Seniors Kayla and Kara Kelly (York, Maine) each posted seven-point efforts with each netting five goals apiece for the Monks. Kayla won a game-high nine draws and picked up five ground balls to go with caused turnover, while Kara came up with five ground balls. Senior attacker Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine) contributed with five points, including four goals and added four draw controls and a match-high eight ground balls. Sophomore netminder Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) stopped seven shots to earn the victory for Saint Joseph's. 

Simmons erased an 8-2 first half deficit by scoring the final two goals of the period and carried its momentum into the second half, scoring four unanswered markers to knot the score at 8-8 with 20:12 left in the second stanza. Bragg fueled the comeback with three goals and assisted on the equalizer from classmate Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) to make it eight-all. 

The Monks regrouped and countered with six straight goals, including two each from Kayla and and Kara Kelly as well as a pair from Caiazzo to take a 14-8 lead with 8:18 showing on the second half clock. 

Cottam ended the Sharks' scoring drought with her 15th tally of the year at 7:11 of the period, but it was the last score for the visitors as Saint Joseph's put two more goals on the board before the final whistle with one marker each from Kayla Kelly and junior defender Brittney Arsenault (Westbrook, Maine) to make it 16-9. 

Bragg opened the match's scoring for Simmons at 25:14 of the opening half, before the Monks scored eight of the next nine goals to open up an 8-2 advantage with 3:23 remaining in the half. The Kelly's opened and closed a four-goal burst with Kara scoring at 23:11 and Kayla netting a marker at 12:12 for a 4-1 home team lead. Cottam interrupted the scoring barrage for the Sharks with her first marker of the day at 11:57, before Kara Kelly netted back-to-back goals in a 90-second span to give Saint Joseph's a 6-2 lead. Kayla Kelly and Caiazzo scored the final two goals of the offensive spurt for the Monks. 

Simmons' next match on Thursday, March 22 hosting GNAC foe Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 p.m. at Daly Field has been postponed without a firm make-up date at this time, while Saint Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, March 24 when it heads to New Haven, Conn. to take on Albertus Magnus College at 1:00 p.m.

Simmons LeBrun Leads Softball in Sweep by Johnson & Wales, 9-2, 12-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - First year third baseman Taylor LeBrun (Milford, Mass.) doubled and homered to lead the Simmons College softball team in a doubleheader sweep by host Johnson & Wales University, 9-2, 12-4, this afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the SMG Athletic Complex in Providence, R.I. The Sharks fall to 12-17 overall and 6-12 in league play, while the Wildcats win their eighth straight game to improve to 26-7 and 14-4.

Johnson & Wales piled up 29 hits on the day, including 12 extra base hits.

LeBrun was 2-6 on the day for Simmons with three runs batted in and two runs scored. First year designated player Alexandra Moleski (Bridgeport, Conn.) knocked in a pair of runs with her first collegiate home run.

Simmons Softball Drops a Pair to Suffolk, 2-1, 10-0

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College softball team rallied to tie game one in the seventh, but fell in the eighth inning to visiting Suffolk University, before losing game two as well, 10-0, today in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play at Memorial Stadium in East Boston. The Sharks fall to 11-14 overall and 5-9 in league play, while the Rams extend their win streak to four straight and improve to 20-6 and 11-3.

Junior second baseman Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) led the Simmons offense, going 3-5 with a double and a run scored for the afternoon.

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) tallied six points, including five goals and senior goalie Victoria Kanaris (Haworth, N.J.) made a season-high 15 saves to lead the Emerson College women's lacrosse team over host Simmons College, 19-7, today on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Lions win their third straight to improve to 9-4 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 5-7.

Sophomore midfielder Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior middie Alexia Malone Oliver (Bristol, R.I.) each netted a pair of goals and picked up a ground ball to lead the Sharks. First year attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) netted a goal, came up with a ground ball and caused a turnover, while sophomore midfielder Gabrielle Klane (Franklin, Mass.) also netted a goal to go with two ground balls, a pair of draw controls and a caused turnover. AUBURNDALE, Mass. - First year starting pitcher Tori Gomes (Taunton, Mass.) hurled a one-hit shutout in six innings to fuel the Simmons College softball team in a doubleheader sweep over host Lasell College this afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Taylor Field in Auburndale, Mass. The Sharks improve to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the Lasers fall to 5-13 and 2-6.

Simmons rapped out nine extra base hits on the day, including four triples and saw five players collect four or more hits in the two games combined.

Gomes struck out five and walked two in six complete innings to earn the game two victory and improve to 4-4 on the season for the Sharks.

BOSTON, Mass. – First year third baseman Dominique Ortiz (Lawrence, Mass.) collected three hits, including a home run and knocked in three runs to lead the Simmons College softball team in a double-header split with visiting Saint Joseph's College (Maine) this afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action that was played at University of Massachusetts Boston in Dorchester, Mass. The Sharks won the opener, 7-1 before being edged in the second contest, 2-1. Simmons is now 7-10 overall and 1-5 in league play, while the Monks are 11-11 and 6-4.

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Simmons College women's One Varsity and Two Varsity Eight squads both finished first at the Clark Invitational this morning on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

The Sharks' 13th-nationally ranked 1V8 won by just under 1.5 seconds pulling across the finish of the 2,000-meter course with a time of 7:06.8. University of Vermont was right behind at 7:08.27 and Mount Holyoke College placed third at 7:16.42. Host Clark University, Bryant University and Endicott College finished in succession after Mount Holyoke.

Simmons Softball Swept at Saint Joseph, 3-2, 5-3; White Collects 100th Career Hit

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Senior center fielder Heather White (Westfield, Mass.) collected her 100th career hit for the Simmons College softball team, but the Sharks were swept by host University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), dropping the first game, 3-2, before losing the second contest 5-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action this afternoon at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Conn. Simmons falls to 6-9 overall and 0-4 in GNAC play, while the Blue Jays win their 11th straight game to improve to 16-4 and 6-0.

White struck a single to center field in the top of the second inning of the first game to mark her 100th career hit for the Sharks. She finished the contest going 2-3 with a walk and two runs batted in. Junior second baseman Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) also had two hits in three at-bats. First year starting pitcher Tori Gomes (Taunton, Mass.) (3-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three in five and one-third innings pitched.

CLERMONT, Fla. – Every hitter in the lineup recorded a hit and first year pitcher Michaela Reeves (Reading, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory in a 7-2 Simmons College softball victory over State University of New York Potsdam this afternoon at the Spring Games at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. The Sharks improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-2.

SUNY Potsdam scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, but that would be the last inning it would score in as Simmons put seven unanswered runs on the board for the remainder of the contest.

Simmons College Softball Falls to SUNY Oneonta, 7-5, in Season Opener

CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior shortstop Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) singled and tripled to lead the Simmons College softball offense in a 7-5 loss to State University of New York this morning at the Spring Games at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. The Red Dragons improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 0-1 in their season opener.

Oneonta took advantage of seven Simmons errors in the victory and never trailed after scoring twice in the top of the first.

Crew Varsity Eight Places 19th at 51st Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Simmons College crew team's Varsity Eight placed 19th out of 32 entries in the historic 51st Head of the Charles Regatta this afternoon on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass.

The eight from Williams College turned in a time of 17:25.577 to win the race.

The Sharks overcame a three-second deficit at the Weld point of the race to move past Rochester Institute of Technology's shell and went on to finish with a mark of 18:46.887. Senior Chelsea Foster (Avon, Conn.) took the oar in the bow seat, followed by first year Sarah Bohan (Guilford, Conn.), seniors Allie Belanger (Blackstone, Mass.), Sophie Stone (Greenland, N.H.), sophomores Erica Bartle (Arlington, Mass.), Erin Lilienthal (East Lyme, Conn.), senior Jill Bolduc (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore stroke Ronnie Bennett (Pottstown, Pa.). Junior Olivia Smiaroski (Northfield, Mass.) led the crew from the coxswain seat.

The Sharks will race again on Sunday, November 1 when they compete in the Seven Sisters Championship hosted by Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.

Downey Wins West Consolation Bracket at NEWITT for Tennis

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Simmons College senior Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) won the West Bracket Final at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament hosted by Smith College today in Northampton, Mass.

Downey (5-5 singles, 10-7 doubles) teamed with senior Alana Peters (Killingworth, Ill.) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology to win their fifth straight match of the tournament, defeating the Amherst College duo of sophomore Adrienne Irmer (Minnetonka, Minn.) and first year Sofia Aisiks (New York, N.Y.), 8-3.

Sophomore Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) (1-3 singles, 6-8 doubles) and first year Ashley Chen (Hilo, Hawaii) (6-5 singles, 8-10 doubles) combined to play for the Southwest bracket crown for the Sharks, but fell to the Trinity College pair of sophomore Sydney Schonefeld (Tiburon, Calif.) and first year Katherine DiRico (Key Largo, Fla.), 8-4.

Simmons senior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) (8-2 singles, 12-4 doubles) and junior Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) (6-4 singles, 12-4 doubles) capped the weekend with an 8-6 victory over the Williams College first year duo of Francesca Eluhu (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Korina Neveux (Miami, Fla.).

The top-seeded Sharks return to action on Saturday, October 24 when they play the winner of number five seed Albertus Magnus College and number four seed University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) at 2:00 p.m. in the Semifinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship at the Winchester Tennis Center in Winchester, Mass.

Duke Leads Volleyball over Mount Ida, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior setter Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) set for 33 assists and fired a match-high five aces to lead the Simmons College women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21) victory over visiting Mount Ida College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks have won four of their last six matches and improve to 9-11 overall and 6-2 in league play, while the Mustangs fall to 10-13 and 2-4.

Simmons held Mount Ida to a negative hitting percentage of -.010, while serving up 13 aces in the victory.

Duke also added a kill and three digs for the Sharks, while junior outside hitter Cailin Fredrickson (Columbia, Md.) smashed 12 kills, picked up six digs, fired an ace and got up for a block assist. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.) also registered 12 kills and added seven digs and a block assist. Junior middle hitter Abby Hart (Westfield, Mass.) hit .500 for the match to fuel an eight-kill effort in addition to four total blocks. Junior libero Alex Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) anchored the defense with a match-high 15 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) led the Mustangs with 12 kills and a .222 hitting mark to go with five digs. First year outside hitter Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded six kills, three aces and seven digs, while senior setter Taylor Davis (Machiasport, Maine) set for 21 assists, got down for four digs and served up an ace. Senior libero Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) led the squad with 10 digs on the defensive side of the net.

The teams played within three points of each other through the first 29 points and were knotted at 13-13, before the Sharks ripped off four straight points, paced by a pair of aces from sophomore right side hitter Amber Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev.), to take a 17-13 lead. The Mustangs later closed to within 20-17, but Simmons scored five unanswered points to close out the set.

The Sharks took a 9-8 edge midway through the second set, before going on a 9-2 run, fueled by two kills from Fredrickson, to take an 18-10 advantage. Mount Ida responded with a 9-3 stretch, behind a pair of kills from Reidy, to pull to within 21-19. Simmons put the set away by scoring four of the final five points.

The Mustangs cut the match deficit to 2-1 with a 25-20 win in the third frame. The Sharks jumped out to a 5-1 cushion, but Mount Ida put together a 10-2 burst, led by two more kills from Reidy, to take an 11-7 margin. Woodward later put down a kill for Simmons to pull the home team to within 13-12, but it was as close as the Sharks would get for the rest of the set. The Mustangs led by as many as five, before taking the set.

The teams played to 12 ties and four lead changes in the fourth set and were tied at 14-14 midway through the frame. Simmons scored 10 of the next 13 points, paced by a pair of aces from Duke, to take a 24-17 lead. Mount Ida made one last push, scoring four straight points, but Woodward swung for a kill to decide the match.

The Sharks will be in action again on Wednesday, October 21 when they host GNAC and cross-street rival Emmanuel College at Moore Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m., while the Mustangs host Suffolk University on the same night at 6:00 p.m.

Soccer Edged by Saint Joseph (Conn.), 1-0

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's soccer team was defeated by visiting University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) this afternoon, 1-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 8-7-0 on the season, including 7-2-0 in league play, while the Blue Jays improve to 7-7-0 and 5-4-0.

Despite owning a 21-9 shot advantage, Simmons was unable to stop the second shot of the contest for Saint Joseph in the 20^th minute of play. Senior midfielder Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) sent a through ball to a wide open Morgan Skoly (Vernon, Conn.) in the left corner, where Skoly tapped in the cross inside the left post for her team-leading seventh goal of the season at 19:04.

The Sharks had taken four shots on net prior to the goal, but were all denied by the Blue Jays' keeper.  They also looked to net the equalizer just over two minutes after the visitors took the lead when senior midfielder Victoria Russo's (Braintree, Mass.) serve on the corner kick reached the head of sophomore forward Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.), but the shot was stopped by the USJ keeper. Senior midfielder Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) looked to put the rebound in, but was also turned away. Simmons was led by senior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.), who ripped seven shots on the afternoon, including five on net. Simmons also held a 5-0 margin on corner kicks, but was unable to put together a score.

Senior keeper Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) made 14 saves to earn her 28^th career shutout for Saint Joseph, including five this season. Senior goalie Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) turned away seven shots for the Sharks.

Simmons returns to action on Wednesday, October 21 when it heads to Providence, R.I. to take on conference foe Johnson & Wales University at 6:30 p.m., while the Blue Jays host Norwich University on the same day at 4:00 p.m.

Rondeau, Wilson Lead Field Hockey over Anna Maria, 6-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and junior midfielder Amy Wilson (Falmouth, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Simmons College field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over visiting Anna Maria College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks have won five of their last seven games and improve to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the AMCATS fall to 11-5 and 3-2.

Simmons outshot Anna Maria by a count of 9-5 in each half.
